Thanks bro, Me and by brother-n-law use up a lot of .223 ammo. We get together every so often and shoot armadillos at night. Soft points, fmj's pretty much anything will work on them. Sometimes I just take my 10/22. They are hell on the hay fields so we kill all we can. He refuses to shoot any handloaded ammo. We know a guy that reloads and is a little sloppy sometimes and he messed up some 9mm shells for him one time and that was it for him. Now he will not shoot anything but factory ammo. He would have bought this .257 STW I have if he could have bought factory ammo for it. He just doesnt know what he is missing.

Do you eat them Armadillos ? traveling through Oklahoma and Missouri I'd see them dead on the road all the time. I know you can eat them. Just wondering if you have and how they taste. Are the rodents ?

I have never ate them. Charley said he had before. I have heard they carry leprosey. I dont know if thats true or not. They are wierd looking critters. They have the shell on top and they have a furry belly. We just kill them be cause they dig up the hay fields. They leave holes everywhere. And sometimes I just need to kill something.

Armadillos aren't rodents, they belong to a class of animals called "endente" which means no teeth. This is not quite accuarte because they have peg teeth for eating grubs. They are after grubs when the dig up your field. The grubs are probably more harmful to your field that the dillos.

I have heard for years that armadillos can't swim. Several years ago I thought I would see if this was true. I chased down a particularly athletic one and threw him into a pond. At this instant we were both quite winded. The pond was deep and clear. He swam almost to the surface but didn't quite make it. He sank to the bottom never to be seen again.

I love 22-250. As I have said before, if I could only have 1 rifle it would be a 22-250.

I might like to have a 6mm Lee Navy (parent case of the 220 Swift) though just for the novelty.

I didn't know they did anything at the rodeo grounds much except the night rodeo in the summer. Have a good friend in Cody I see every year in Nov. and hunt with. Been there in Sept. and Nov. , that's it. Never even been to Yellowstone except the 1st week of Nov. before the close. Wait, you said the rodeo in Red Lodge didn't you ? I read it too fast. My friend has some property and a cabin up on the North Fork. Beautiful country. I sometimes hunt up in Sunlight Basin. Not too far from Red Lodge. He has a cabin up there too. He's a rich fk .  He owns 3 motels in Cody and a buncjh of other crap. A really nice guy though. Met him in 1998 and staid in contact since.  72coupe, you are a cruel man thowing a bowling ball with claws in a pond and watch it sink....:shameon:   Don

Well usually the only problem we have with insects or worms are Army Worms. We can spray for them though. The dillos leave holes everywhere. I can make a pass through a couple fields and usually see between 8 and 12.

As far as the chase seen, I would have liked to watch that. Those things are pretty darn fast.

Pat, I drew a cow elk tag for area 121 by Heart Mtn. out of Cody. I've killed a couple of decent bucks there. Last Nov. I was hunting in 121 for deer with my friend and saw two herds of elk. One about 100 with only one huge 6 pt. in it. another about half mile away of about 50 that had 5 6 pt. bulls in it. and some raghorns. 2 of the bulls were big and the last one in line when they stated to take off (at about 150 yds.) was a HUGE 6t. If I'd  had a tag ... Well at least I have 2 pts. (max) for elk. Maybe next year. Still will have a deer and a cow elk tag. Friend has horses too ! Have you hunted deer or elk in Wy. ?

Yep, armadillos are about the only reservoir of Hansen's Disease, AKA leprosy, besides humans in the world.  It's not terribly contagious, it seems you have to work pretty hard to catch it.  I'd be sure and butcher armadillos wearing latex gloves if you are inclined to eat them. I haven't eaten one in years, but they taste ok. I suspect cooking destroys M. laprae, the bacteria that causes the disease, because Hansen's seems to favor cooler parts of the body (extremities).

This is the closest recipe I've found to the way I've fixed them. I don't like ketchupy BBQ, I baste with a vinegar, water, salt and pepper mix.

~ 1 armadillo
~ bacon grease
~ 1 cup butter
~ 1/2 cup ketchup
~ 1/2 cup grated onion
~ 2 tbsp mustard
~ tabasco to taste
OR
use your favorite BBQ sauce

In a sauce pan, combine the butter, ketchup, onion, mustard and tabasco. Heat over low heat until the butter is melted. Stir occasionally.

Rub bacon grease into the armadillo.

Grill over a hot fire for 5 minutes.

Reduce the fire by half.

Baste the meat with the sauce until done. Armadillo is cooked like pork.

Serve and Enjoy!

Well even though Armadillos are turning up in Tennessee now I don't think I'll be cooking and eating any ot them. My personal favorite of the two presented is the 22-250, mine was a Remington BDL HBV, it killed a lot of groundhogs and saved a lot of bean fields around here. I've eaten BBQ'd groundhog and it wasn't to bad, just glad I wasn't the one that cleaned and skinned them, they're nasty critters.

I have never hunted in wyoming except we shot a few rabbits, when i was in school there. I hunt mostly right at home and a little bit in the northwest corner of the state. I have some good friends up there.  I have one good mule deer i shot here at home he will be back from the taxidermist in about six weeks, i will try to post some pictures when he gets here.

Pat, I'd like to see some pics when you get the head back. If you look at the post "1st pig of Winter" by donger, I posted some pics. Was learning how at the time. The big 3x3 from Utah is at the Taxidermist now too. He was 28 in. and I couldn't resist. Had the cape in my freezer for two yrs.Just what I needed, another head on the wall. I love looking at them though. The buck from last year Wy. I let a taxidermist friend in Cody do a european skull mount for me. I let him keep the cape and he did it for $40.00 ! He's done with it. Just waiting for his lazy ass to ship it. Never had one done. I tried it on a javalina skull once. Not too good....

Wyo you are welcome to come to Alabama and we can get all the dillos you can stand. The last time we went after some it was windy and a storm was coming in. We only saw one that night but he looked like he could have taken a leg off a grown elephant. He looked like he was as big around as a 5 gallon bucket. My brother-n-law missed him so we came home without a kill that night.
