Hey Camo, A bowhunter I see. Now I have someone with something in common, And we know that lightweight carbon arrow flies flatter and faster but a heavier arrow shot from the same pull weight will sure penetrate deeper right ? Just like the 10 lb rock will hit your head harder and the 180 gr. 30 cal will penetrate deeper than a 150 gr. (same type bullet) and our big trucks will flatten little foriegn cars better than small cars. I'm guilty of shooting fsat carbon arrows . But with their small diameter, I get pass throughs from 5 to 45 yds. (on elk too) . Did that diameter thing start something else ? What type 30 cal are you shooting a 180 gr, from ? We can talk about that too. A long time ago I talked to a man a Barnes Bullets. He was trying to get me to shoot 75 gr. Barnes X bullets out of a .25 Bullberry TC Contender rifle barrel I had. I was shooting Nosler Balistic tips, Sierra SBT and Speer SBT out of it with excelent accuracy with max loads at about 2900 fps out of a 23 in ported heavy barrel. He said They would shoot faster and retain more weight because of being solid copper. They shot like crap and their 90 gr. did too. I'll sacrafice an extra 150 fps. for a  one in. better group and more muzzle energy to boot. Just my opinion.  Don

Alright wyo heres my two cents. If you want to carry farther af heavier bullet moving fast will carry better. However practice is still the key If you know the gun and how it shoots, that will make you know the guns limits. So Practice and practice some more trigger time equals good clean kills in my book, but nobodys perfect and we all miss from time to time or get a hit that doesnt quite go where you might want it to be, no matter how much you shoot. Pat

Well I agree that the heavy bullet will be more predictable at extreme ranges. Practice is the key to succesful long range shooting. After I get some loads worked up I am going to practice some fairly long shots to get ready for Wyoming.

I checked my neck thickness with the bullet seated and they are all .284-.286. I should be good to go.

Pat, I just like to see you two go on. I won't tell you how many head of big game I've killed and missed a few too. I never shoot the heaviest bullet in any caliber. I've been reloading for 32 yrs. I like the intermediate weights. I shoot 140-150 gr. in my 7 mags, did shoot 160 Barnes once on elk in Col. Dropped him like a rock at 200 yds. Also used a 140 gr. Barnes X on another elk in Col. at 300 yds. He went down just as fast  I use 150 to 180 gr. in my .300 RUM. Just 180's the last 2 yrs. 30.06 150 to 165, 308 150's,243 100 gr. , .25 Bullberry 100 gr. and 22-250 50 to 55 gr.. Force did make me buy some 40 grainers though... So you see, I'm not really a HEAVY bullet fan. Am I ramblin' on ? I'm not posting on this subect anymore. :shameon:

:offtopic::lies::onrant: Lol, I have read that the .257 with the Lost River J36 100 grain bullet will drop an elk the same way. I have read that it will break both front shoulders. My little quarterbore rifle.....

Well I went to Noslers website and read about there bullets and the velocities they can handle. 3000 or a little more was it. I want something that is more versatile in case I have a closer shot. If I can get these Barnes you sent me to shoot accurately then I may take these to Wyoming. Or I may order the J36's. I dont know yet...

I shot the ballistic tips in mine and they hold up good. If those barnes dont shoot try the newer barnes triple shocks I didnt have any left or i would have sent you some they are a good bullet but open up a little better than the old ones. My rifle shoots them good.

I'm posting again :lol:Force , I didn't have any TSX in 7mm or I would have sent you some. I guarentee they will drill though both shoulders at reasonable distance. In my 300 rum they are awesome and Ive tried most of them out there. The partitions will loose the whole front half of the bullet to the partiton and weigh half ther weight they started. I shot them for years. A good bullet. The Balistic tips in 150, I found only peices.

Hey WYO  yep I love to bow hunt you can see some of my stuff at http://www.Mike.vissari.com I shoot carbons also black max HIT and you're right with a 125 gr. thunderhead out front the zip through pretty much anything.  I worked at a pro shop so if you want to talk bows arrows and bow hunting just start a thread or come find me at http://www.marylandwhitetail.com .

Back on subject... :lol:I was thinking of shooting the 90gr. Sierra's  or the 85. or 100 gr. ballistic tips i even thought of the 110 gr. accubond but wanted to stay toward the lighter side.  One thing I didn't think about was a close up shot. Maybe I should look into the barnes or the J34's.  I'd like to talk some more about them keyholing and at what speed they were at.

I don't shoot any 180 gr. I was just using that as an example.  I do shoot 150's out of my 300 WSM and 130's out of my 270 WSM and 55gr out of my 243 WSSM.  That's why I was thinking 90 - 100 in the 25 - 300 WSM Wildcat, but I may need to rethink that.  Maybe I'll just shoot them all and go with the best group and hope it's not the 120 gr.

I'd like to go lighter for the speed but I after reading what I just wrote seems best to go with what betsy likes.

Hey camo, That's great. I will check both sites out ! Probably when I get home. At work now and sneak on now and then. I shoot a Bowtech Allegiance and use Easton Epic carbon arrows. I've been shooting expandable broadheads for the last few years. Been trying different ones. The elk I shot last Sept. I used the new Rage 3 blade expandable. Not much of a test. Shot down at 5 yds.from a tree stand and hit the spine and dropped on the spot. Put another through the chest because I don't like seeing suffering. You can see a couple cow elk I shot on the thread "1st pig of winter" by Donger. they were from 05 and 06. Have also shot a 5 pt. bull and another cow all were in Az. Back to the topic . :shameon: it's just me from experience but pushing a Sierra or Nosler B.T. at real high velocity...I've done it in 7 mags and my 300 RUM and they pretty much explode. Now I'm sure at extended ranges from say 300 or 400+ yds. it could be different and probably is . Or with a heavier bullet by same maker. I guess it would be fine if you knew for sure it was going to be long range. My friend was shooting a 300 Weatherby and shooting Nosler Combined Techs and B.T.'s in 150 gr. They were blowing to hell too and ruining allot of meat. Ii told him if he wanted to shoot light weight bullets like that try Barnes or shoot a heavier bullet maybe in a Scirroco,Accubond,Hornady Interbond or even a Nosler Partition. He went to Barnes and a heavier bullet. A Barnes 180 XBT. He saw what mine were doing. I switched to the Barnes Triple Shok and it is very accurate and you can push it a little faster/more powder. I'm getting 3/4 in. grps. at 3360 fps. w/180 gr. I can live with that. The 180 gr. Swift Scirroco will do the same but I don't like the weight loss. They were better than Hornady Interbonds,Nosler Accubonds and Partitions as far as weight retention. The 150's in all of those were like grenades. The 180's were much better but nothing can match a Barnes X as far as weight retention. The most I have ever lost was 10 grs. average is 5 grs. and some I've had 100%.I bought 165's in all those brands but never tested them on paper or game. Just went to 180's. I did shoot my bighorn with a Barnes XBT moly 168 gr. though. TSX were not out yet. This is all just my opinion and experience and would never tell you what to shoot but If I was looking for speed/flat shooting combo, I would shoot a 90-100 gr. Barnes TSX in your 257 and 25-300 and see how it does on paper. 55 gr. in your 243 WSM ? WOW ! I bet that's a screamer. I think 150 gr. in your 300 WSM is perfect. Try a TSX or Scirroco on paper with it to. I bet the TSX would shoot good. I'm using Hogdon Retumbo in my .300 rum. 100--101 gr. w/180 gr. bullet. 106 gr. w/150 gr. at 3650+ fps ! Like I said , grenades if not a Barnes. I should be a salesman for them huh ? Sorry sor makin' this so long. Take care,                                                Don

Hey camotruck, When mine was tumbling it was because of my powder. It was way to fast burning. It is almost driving nails now. It will be soon.

Wyo, My 7mm, with factory winchester 150 ballistic silvertips, is shooting at over 3200. They were 3263 exactly. I was impressed for factory loads.

The NRB bullets are a solid copper machined bullet with a machined copper ballistic tip. They are built a lot like a barnes so they should hold up to the speed.

Hey Force ! That's damm good velocity on your 7 mag ! What length barrel ? 24 in. ? Mine is and with max loads w/Barnes 140 XBT Moly coated I was only getting 3242 to 3256 fps spread. WTF ? That was with Rel. 22. I never did try Rel 25,Retumbo or IMR 7828 in it. Thought that those powders were to slow burning for lighter weight bullets in the 7 mag. What are NRB bullets ? Are they the JS2/Lost River ?

My 7 is a 26" Sendero stainless fluted bull barrel. The sad thing was that was a factory load. If a factory load will do that I should be able to squeeze more out of it with 4350 and 140's. Ah hell, I meant LRB for Lost River Ballistics. Brain farted again.

Awesome. Mine is a 24" on a Ruger MK II stainless. My .300 rum is a 26" barrel. you should easily get 3350 to 3400 with the 140's. I used to load 65.0 grs. of 4350 with them and 70.0 grs. of RL22 which I think is a little slower burning. Might try retumbo ? I never did. It came out after I starting shooting the .300. I sent you some Barnes 130 gr. XBT's also. I weighed them out and all are right at 130.0 gr. They out to scream out of you Sendero ! And won't loose weight either....Just like a heavier bullet but with the speed.
