How many of you tried the Black Talon ammo when it was available?  Winchester had it out for a few years in the early to mid '90s.  But when emergency room doctors made a big fuss on the evening news about it cutting them as they removed bullets from gunshot victims, Winchester decided to remove it from the market.

I went through probably 7 boxes of 44 magnum, 3 boxes of 9mm, and one of 357 magnum.   I still have 2 boxes of 44 mag, 1 of 357, and about 10 rounds of 9mm.   There's still some to be found on the internet I believe, but probably at a premium price.

This picture is of two 44 Magnum 250gr Black Talons.  The bullet on the left was fired through a water jug backed up by wood.   The one on the right was fired into wood only.   You can see those little razor edges folded out and ready to slice through soft material.   The core and jacket held up well under my limited testing.   The expanded bullet measures .830".     The lead core swelled to .550".   The base of the non-expanded bullet still measures .429".   I never did use any on game so I don't have experience on how they actually work, but I think they should do ok.

I have a few boxes of these in .44 Mag. It's unbelievable what this ammo will fetch at gun shows. I've seen it for as much as $50.00 @ box! I think the new Platinum loads from Winchester are even better. They are even avaliable in the new .500 S&W loading, as well as .454 Casull and .44 Magnum. I remember the whole Black Talon fuss when it hit the media. All Winchester did was change the name, and the new loads are every bit as good.  billt

T-series and Platinum loads.   Hmmm, I guess I haven't been looking at much factory ammo the last few years.   I'm gonna check those out.

I tried them but didn't think they where  worth all the hype the media gave them .  I like the Bonded Gold Dot Speer better. I'm not saying the are no good , i'm just saying they are not worth what the market demands for them today. I have never seen anyone who was shot with one, so can't really judge them . I have worked on a number of gunshot victims and one bullet that works very well  99.9% of the time is the Winchester 158 gr Lead HP in the 38 Spl. known as the FBI load , every person we got in, who was  shot with this load out of a 4 inch Mod 10 S&W by the VA State Police were DOA. Exit wounds when golf ball size and this bullet worked 100 % on all the shooting i seen. If you are going to carry a 38 Spl for self defence , try to find this load and carry it and you will be well armed. I worked in the Hospitial for almost 30 years in Critial Care and every gunshot we got in i studied the entrance and exit wounds and the angle that the bullet entered the body. You can learn a lot about how pistol ammo works on tissue. We got this girl in that was shot by her husband 5 times with a 38 Smith Chief with hollow base wadcutters in the chest and once in the lower neck ( he caught her in bed with another girl but only shot her) the only bullet that really did any damage was the lower neck wound because it nicked the major vessel in the neck lots of blood loss, the other four impacted on the upper chest or sterum and just flatten out on the bone with no pentration, she lived and i see her on the street sometime now and this happened in the 70's. So bullet selection for you self defence is very important. Pick well.  Kind of got off topic sorry.

Bea, did you ever get anyone shot by a 25auto.  I've heard that those bullets often lodge under the skin without doing any real damage.

The guy that shot his wife was a real dumba**, in more ways than one.

Here's one bullet I'd never use for defense.  In fact I don't know what it's good for.   PMC 44 Spcl hollow copper bullet.   There's a plastic wad between the bullet and powder.   I bought these as they were on sale cheap and I was curious.   At least the brass was good.

We got in three i can remember, two where  Virginia State Trooper , a 16 years old boy shot one three times in the back with the 25 Auto and the other  he shot in the neck , after being shot in the neck he shot the kid with his S&W Model 10 with the 158 Lead HP , needless to say the kid died on the spot with one shot entering under the arm pit and exiting out the other side and one shot in the abdomen with the exit wound in the lower back. The trooper shot in the back had a lung down and we put chest tubes in and had him on the vent for about a week, the one shot in the neck went to surg and both are alive today but retired after the shooting . The third was a guy in the local beer joint and was with this guys wife the man walk in and shot him 6 or 7 times in the neck and chest with the 25 auto he was dead when he arrived in ER none of the bullets exited and you could see all of them on the x-ray we took . My opinion the 25 auto is better than nothing but not by much. I would rather have a good 22 lr with HP  because everyone we got in shot with the 22 lr died  before they got to the hospitial or died later. You get a lot of internal bleeding with the 22 lr . The 22 will get you killed if you don'rt make a head shot. The 38 is the smallest cal you should carry for self defense. My opinon.
