Does anybody load this 30-06 offshoot or ever used it?It is very interesting as well in the 6.5 Wildcat family.

Handload,

I have not built a 6.5-06 but I have built several 6.5-06 AI rifles and they are very impressive in performance and accuracy.

In a 26" barrel, my 6.5-06 AIs are getting right at 3050 fps with the 140 gr class bullets.

They will puch 3300 fps with a 120 gr Ballistic Tip, or +2900 fps with a 155 to 160 gr bullet.

Another great round is the 6.5mm WSM.  I have built a couple of these and they offer a bit more performance over the '06 AI but they do not feed as smoothly as teh '06 case.  You will get near 3200 fps with the 140 gr pills though.

I built myself an XP-100 in 6.5 WSM and it is extremely accurate averaging in the .4" range without waiver!  I shoot the 120 gr Ballistic Tip to 3075 fps and used it to take a large mule deer doe this fall at 324 yards with one shot.   The 120 BT broke both shoulders dropping her where she stood.

I to like 6.5mm rounds.  TO answer your question about the standard 6.5-06, it to would be a great round, it would run around 100 to 125 fps less then the AI but still very useful and easy to load.  In fact you can take 25-06 brass, seat a boattailed 6.5mm bullet like a 120 gr Ballistic Tip without even neecking the case up and your ready to roll.  No need to preneck up the cases with a boattail bullet.  You can not even tell your seating an oversided bullet in the case.

Good Shooting!!

Fifty,I like the sounds of that 6.5 AI.Is it a standard 40 degree shoulder? As you know, it was you who turned me onto the 25-06AI.After lots of reading I am convinced P.O. was on the right track with some of his improved cartridges.

Handload,

When I lived in TX, I often thought the 6.5-06 would be the perfect round for TX. I thought long and hard about building one on a Remington action, that I also thought long and hard about while there. The thing that stopped me, I do not handload. I hope to start in a few years, and the 6.5-06 is on my list as the first to build.

Hey Hogfan,I`ll probably have a short action 6.5 built first. But I betcha I have a 6.5-06 befor I`m finished with custom rifles.Good analogy and take on Texas deer hunting by the way.I think a 6.5-06 would fit with any deer.Mulies or whitetail in this state...Gene

Friends & Neighbors,

My particular 6.5/06 was built on a high number '03 Springfield, 24" Douglas barrel, Timney trigger by Dale Wise in San Antonio, Texas in the early 1960's.  A Fajen walnut sporter stock was added by Alex Harper also of SAT.  Best accuracy was with the Sierra 100gr HP powered by H-4831.  My deer, varmint and what-ever for over 25 years.  The rifle is semi-retired now as I wander thru the plethora of various other cartridges of standard, Ackley and wildcat nature.  So many good cartridges to choose from...time will tell how many I manage to mess with.

Ol' John..;-)

The one on the far left is the 6.5 Grendel and the one next to it is the 6.5 Remington BR.  The one you have the most interest in is the 4th from the right - 6.5/06.  The one to the left of it is the 6.5/06 Ackley Improved.  All of the cartridges are 6.5's of one kind or another.

Hey John, actually I want a 6.5-06 and a 6.5-284.I`ll probably start with the 6.5-06 first though.I`m still not sure between the 6mm-284 or the 6.5-284.I`ll have to have all of em built so I have to do one at a time due to funds.

For our kind of deer hunting a 6.5-06 oughtta be a real crowd pleaser...;-)

Timberghozt,

Just revived my 6.5-06 from storage.  Here is a pic of it along side my other '03 Springfield in .257 AI.  I will try to get some other pics of the 6.5-06 and post later.

My deer load for Texas whitetail with this rifle was 63.0gr of H4831 with 100gr Sierra HP's.  Many deer with this rifle before I semi-retired it in favor of the .223.  The 6.5-06 is the top rifle.

Ol' John

Howdy Ol John.Man oh man, those are both beautiful rifles.I am thinking about buying me a new 270 later on this year and using my old Remington as the platform for a 6.5-06.

Those stocks on your rifles are very nice, but the stock on that but the stock on that  257 AI is magnificent.Did you do the checkering on it?Honestly ,looks sharp John.I`m gonna write that load tip of yours down in my Sierra manual. Its just a matter of time till I have one of these..Thanks,and good to see you John..

Gene

Gene,

I wish I could claim the work done but I cannot.  The stock is a Herter's French walnut and the finish & checkering was done by Alex Harper of San Antonio, TX some 40 years ago.  Alex was a master worker of wood.  The metal work and chambering was done by a gunsmith by the name of Dale Wise, also of San Antonio.  As a matter of record both rifles were done by these two individuals.  Here is a close up of the checkering pattern (French Skipline) done by Alex.

Timber if you want a short action 6.5 just buy you a 260 Rem and go from there. I had ER Shaw barrel up a Mauser action in the 6.5 Swede and matte blue the barrel action and i replaced the trigger with a tim's and glass bedded in a synth. stock but i never fired the rifle. I built it and gave it to my Doctor friend that i have worked with for 20 + years . I knew he was a big 6.5 Swede and Mauser fan . One more thing i had Shaw tap the action for Redfield bases and we placed a 3x9 Leupold on the rifle. He loves it and this rifle is one of his favorites.

Hey bea.Sounds like a real nice setup.I thought about a 6.5x55.Very nice little cartridge. You dont see many 6.5 Swedes or 260 Rems either for some reason.I`ve seen a few 264 Win Mags but they are rare too.Never do you see a 6.5-06.For some reason the 6.5`s are not popular in this area??

John,

Seems your missing a 6.5mm round in that line up.

The one in the middle is the 6.5-338 RUM which when fireformed will be the 6.5mm Allen Mag.  Will be identical to the round on the left, the 257 Allen Mag but in 6.5mm.

Everyone needs a 100 gr Ballistic Tip loaded to 4150 fps!!!  Or better yet, a 169 gr Wildcat loaded to 3150 fps with a bc of .950!

Obviously efficency is not high on my priority list, I just want to reach out there and touch something, HARD!

Later, great looking rifle.

I do not do the fancy checkering but my rifles turn out alright looks wise and tend to shoot pretty well:rolleyes:!

Everyone needs 104 grains of powder under their 6.5mm bullets!!

Good SHooting!!

Kirby Allen(50)

50,

Some most interesting cartridges thar, neighbor!  And the rifle is most spectacular!

Do I detect a Holland brake at the end of that smokepole?

If I get to Montana in the fall of 2006..I would appreciate a demonstration!
