The hodgon website lists starting weight at 34 grains and the max at 36.5 grains. Hope this helps. Later Pat.

I would have to check my notes but I am sure I have used 37 behind a 55 and I think 39 behind a 50 grain. Varget has worked very well for me.

hodgdons website is very informative.imr and winchester powders are also covered.when load data does not specify the bullet type of construction,it is best to heed the warning and at least back off somewhat to start.i shoot h powders the most and their site is my goto for data.

I dont know if you guys are awear or not but an Australian company called ADI makes alot of Hodgons powders for them. If you are running short of load data you can go to the ADI website and find loads for example Varget is what we over here call AR 2208, Benchmark is Benchmark 2 to us (there's also a benchmark 1 over here) so you will still get the data needed but under another name. Dunno why its done this way but I thought this would help.

Haven't used Varget for 55 grain bullets in 22-250 but I found a pretty sweet load for
60 grain bullets.

Here's the data I used:

Winchester Model 70 XTR 22-250 Remington
Remington Cases trimmed to 1.903 +/- 0.002 inches
Federam GM210 M Primers
34.8 grains of Varget
60 Grain Sierra Soft Point Flat Base bullets
Cartridge OAL = 2.417 +/- 0.002 inches
3423 FPS muzzle velocity
6 FPS Standard Deviation
100 yard 3-shot group (measured center to center) 0.194 inches

Good powder.  For load data, I would of course use the companies website before I used my word on what load to use!

It does tend to be compressed in 223 and not fit in the case beware of spilling powder.  Probably will need to use a drop tube or light loads.

Also, it is a long stick powder, so it won't like being run through a powder measure.  I think it ran through mine with about +/- .2 grain accuracy.  Not good enough IMHO.

Handloader magazine, June-Juyl 2007 has over 300 loads for 22-250, including loads using Varget with bullet weights from 40-60 grains.  It's a great magazine and you can get back issues from wolfe publishing.  Also check out http://www.loaddata.com

good luck.
