looking at the hodgdon site,BL-C(2) looks to get the most velocity for the pressure.it flows like water so it will be a pleasure to load in the 204 case.  http://www.hodgdon.com/HomePage.php

I have had great luck in my 20 tactical (20/223) with H322, N133, 10X, and have been testing H4198.

I live in Minnesota so I need to have powders that are not sensitive to temp changes, all the powders listed above are suppose to be really good with this problem.

All the powders should be good with the 204 ruger also

I've been loading for the .204 for 2yrs now, my favorite are currently h335 and benchmark, be very careful with blc-2 it builds pressure fast! I quit using it because it was very heat sensitive, a load that works great in Febuary will have serious pressure build up in August, good luck and enjoy the cartridge I do!

I have used my blc2 loads in 104 degree weather and haven't had any pressure problems.  Now I am only on my third loading but the cases haven't grown that much after fireing.  I also am not close to a max load.  30grs BLC2 behind a 40gr HDY shot out of a Browning Varment Staulker.  sub MOA shooter at 200yds.  With no wind I can tear up pop cans at 300.  Never been PDog hunting without wind so consistant hits at 300yds don't come often.

You made a good choice with the savage.  They flat out shoot rite out of the box.  What model savage is it: Low Pro, etc.

Hi NUshooter
after a lot of internal debate I decided I  don't like SS. I do like the synthetic stock
I want more than one shot and a longer gun than the Varmiter I'm getting the ...
12 Series Varmint  Model 12FV – with AccuTrigger Now I have to decide on a scope  We have a small farm surrounded by large ranches and state land. The crows have learned the efective range of my modified 10/22 and sit out at 150-200 yrds
and I feel like im 8 again I can't wait till xmas . Problem is as soon as i get it I will want to put on a scope and hit my shooting range (in my back yard 0-300 yrds) but if I know my wife and my Boys they will probably make sure it is the last present I unwrap:crybaby:

My brother has a model 12 tactical in 25-06.  The thing shoots way better than I could imagine.  I have a Cooper that I spent a ton of money on.  We go to the range together every chance that we get.  I take my cooper and shoot 1/2 MOA at 100yrds.  He sets down and shoots a group that makes up one ragged hole.  Now I am still in load developement and he has his load perfected, but I still get that look from him.  Then he'll say what did you spend all that money for.  I am a fan of the Savage rifles for that very reason.  They flat out shoot right out of the box.

Have fun with your new toy, get yourself a good quality scope, and give the crows heck.

Try W.W. Brass with CCI bench rest primer with 27.6 grs of Hogden/ Varget with a Sierra 39 gr Blitz King, this load gives me .4975" at 200 yards out of my Remington VssfII @3690 fps.

I loaded some for my partner and he shoots 1 hole 5 shot groups in his new model 12 Savage. These rifles both have 26" barrels.

I just finished my custom rifle, mini mauser action, pac nor super match grade barrel, richards in line thumbhole stock, timney trigger, and I'm now looking at a scope also! me thinks i'll purchase a bushnell elite 4200 6-24x w/mil dot reticle.

if your just looking to shoot crows, you might check the berger 30gr match hollow points sitting on top of 28.2 gr of benchmark, if your looking to kill coyotes you might seriously look at the 35gr bergers.

went on a prairie dog shoot last may, my 16yo son found the 30gr bergers to his liking and was drilling prairie dogs out at 400yds with the 30gr bergers, we used the remington brass, rem 71/2 primers, 28.2gr benchmark and the bullets loaded out to 2.285 col

Braccoguy: I have as yet to find an inaccurate loading (either factory ammo or my own handloads!) for any of my 4 Varmint type Rifles in caliber 204 Ruger!

And man after 48 years of handloading for Rifles this caliber stands alone in that regard!!!

If I were you I would be sure to try Federal 205M primers, H 4895 and most of all the Berger 35 gr. bullets will lead you directly to accurate handloads.

Best of luck with the upcoming new Rifle!

Hold into the wind

hello, a new member here. i have a mint "marlin 322" which appears to be a marlin-barreled small action sako. i am told the marlin barrels burn out between 500 and 2500 rounds. i am seriously thinking of re-barreling in either the original 222 or going to the smaller 204 ruger. barrel will be up to 26" medium contour. taregts will be groundhogs, 100-250 yards. suggestions?

I am new here myself! But I would use the barrel you have untill it was no good any more. AT that distance you should not have any problem. Either 22 or 20 cal. I like them both. Sound's like an intersting rifle happy hunting

how soon the throat erodes to the point of reduced accuracy will be determined largly by you.let it cool a bit between shots.waiting with  the bolt open will help .

hmmmm, i am told that even with care, the marlin micro-groove process wears down the lands absurdly quickly when shooting fast ammo such as the 222, which was why the 322 was killed after 2 years of production. since the rifle is almost unused to date, my thinking is in pulling the original bbl while in excellent condition, i could keep the possibility of returning the gun to original excellent condition later. i will see how much a goonsmith will charge to do a measure now and in a few hundred rounds to see if any noticable wear.

if i rebarrel, any real difference between 222 vs 204 in 250 yard varmint-popping? i assume bbl life, recoil, noise and cost about the same?

I have shot both the 222 and now the 204 to me they are incompareable.
The 222 is a nice shooting fun plinker I have killed hundreds of  PD's with it
shoots great .
The 204 IS A LASER DRIVEN TACK DRIVING VARMIT EXTERMINATOR !!!
I love it I cant say enough I have not had the weather to sit down and realy sight it in properly or test loads one day with 6 yes six shots I sighted in the scope  to a one hole 3 shot group at 50 yrds, then started shooting crows I have not missed yet crows 150 yrds
NO problem sparows at 75 yards no problem My 2 sons 12 and 13 shot it and hit a 2 liter pepsi bottle of water at 200 yards. So far I have loaded 4 diff loads using hodgen data
32 grain noslers and 40 grain hornady's both with a medium load and a just under max load IT DON'T CARE !!

I LOVE THIS GUN!!!

so, i see you wrote 1 line on the 222 and 2 paragraphs of praise for the ruger....do you prefer the ruger? i have another 222 (anschutz 22' sporter bbl), so if i were to rebarrel the marlin, would you think the ruger a worthwhile change?

Yes i just recieved  this gun for christmas adn it is the most accurate sweet shooting gun I have ever seen. I spent 14 years as a professional hunting guide and i am serious when I say this the best shooting caliber I have ever seen. The 222 is a little quieter and less recoil but for accuracy no contest.

I'm sure you will love the 204.  When I started working up a load I used H335 since I had a lot of it on hand.  I'm not shooting the max, but when I found a 5 shot 100 yard group I could cover with a quarter that was good enough for me.  I load 26.8 gr of H335, 32 gr Vmax, in neck sized Hornady cases.  Book says about 3830fps, but I've never confirmed that.  Works real well to about 400yds on the prarrie dogs in the high country.  The books also say at my altitude things should be going a little faster, but again, I can't confirm this.  I shoot a Ruger 77VT.  Have fun with your Christmas present when the snow's gone.
