I know Marlin chambered a lever action for this cartridge.Did Winchester ever chamber it in a lever action??

I was looking at some data on the cartridge and just wondered about it..???

The weapon that made the 256 a household name was the Single Shot Ruger Hawkeye Pistol, which the round was designed for, it had the looks of a Colt Peasemaker but was a single shot that loaded direct into the barrel with a swing breech block. Marlin then chambered their little lever gun for the round, model 62 i believe. Then Thompson picked it up for their Contender. I don't think Wichester chambered a rifle for it but i could be wrong, just don't ever remember seeing a rifle by Win in this cal. One more thing i forgot to mention is you should be able to make your brass from 357 mag case since the 256 is the 357 necked down.

Thanks bea for the info.About two years ago at the flea market in Belton Texas I looked at a lever action Winchester that was chambered in an oddball cartridge.I cant remember for the life of me what it was.It was in new condition and still had the original box it came in.I`m kicking myself still for not buying it.

The marlin 62 was also chambered in the 22 mag and 22 Jet. They are nice little rifles. I was thinking they chambered it in 30 US Carbine but could be wrong.

my 256 is currently ona martini cadet action.  I had a t/c in 256 that I used for cougar hunting which preformed well on cats.  Load is 16.5 gr H4227 & a 60 gr bullet.

always worked fine, but of course the cat was in a tree & we would be pretty much directly under them.  Only time it was in trouble was when david wounded one, the cat jumped out of the tree and backed into a small cave in the rocks.  Then he missed the 2nd shot and only had 3 with him to start.  So he tried to club the cat, took a big old tree limb and when he tried to hit the cat the cat reached out and batted the limb out of his hands.  Then he used his last shot - didn't kill him yet.  ended up making a fire and waiting half the night for the thing to die.  I really liked the 41 mag better, never had as much as a cough out of one hit with it.  357's usually the cat ran away and need finishers.

Hey bea, the .348 win. was chambered in the model 71, which was an updated M1886, they also did the .307, .356, .375 winchester cartridges in the model 94 Big Bore, I had a pre-safety .375 for about 2 months, most brutal recoiling rifle I've ever owned.
