Does any one have any recommended load data for this cartridge? Im looking for some Elk loads, for a Remington 700 SS. Preferably with 180 gr. Hornady btsp. Last edited on Thu Jan 3rd, 2008 04:25 AM by varmintcaller

80gr is way too much for that case! I think he meant 60gr.
I use the 180gr ballistic tip with only 58gr of IMR4350 and overall length of 2.825" and it took a Vermont moose down with ease and came out the other side - quite a bit of meat damage, you need to aim BEHIND the shoulder with that bullet. Good accuracy 1" at 100yds.
My BEST grouping with my 300 saum is with my varmint load - 65gr of IMR 4350, CCI primer, 110gr Hornady Amax and a reduced overall length of 2.755" to seat the bullet. This is out of my Rem 700 stainless 24" barrell and the recoil is extremely mild. I have <1/2" groups all day long with this load at 100yds, and I would not be afraid to shoot a whitetail with these if I had to.
I like 125grs ballistic tips for deer with 64gr IMR 4530, meat damage is not bad and I have penetrated through both shoulders and out on the NY farm size deer (175lbs)which was a big surprise to me!
Make sure you have your trigger worked and the Simms deresonator was a cheap but ugly accuracy improver for my gun also.

No problem, I love my 300 SAUM, if you only needed one gun that would be a good choice for everything up to elk and moose size and that's why I bought it.
I would guess that 80gr would dump all over when you tried it so no big deal, you would have found out the easy way.
I unfortunately foud out the hard way when I bought some 223 wssm roundsoff gunbroker.com, some were loaded like they were supposed to with 40gr (max)some were loaded with 45gr and after the 1st shot I couldn't even open the bolt on the rifle with those.
The seller made it up to me so no damage done, just be CAREFUL when handloading.

Yeah, I hear ya, im torn between my .300 RSAUM and my .300WBY Mag. The WBY was left to me by my dad, and im leaving it to my son, the SAUM is to replace the WBY.
