I was wondering if anybody that shoots a 25-06 has a favorite Whitetail Deer load ,if so could you share it with me?

JR, I did give you a load over on another site, however there are NO expressed warranties that this load of mine or any other load will be correct for your rifle (shooting groups uner 1-MOA understand) YOU really should do the benchwork and field work to get what I call exceptional shooting groups and also test the bullet for proper expansion, as well as retention according to the big game your going to hunt.

JR-1968, I would invest in a good reloading manual like NOSLER'S or HORNADY. This will put you in touch with plenty of loads to start from and give you knowledge of what powder is best suited for your particular needs. Last edited on Wed Mar 19th, 2008 11:54 PM by

R22 is an outstanding powder for the .25-06 . I use it with the 110 gr. Nosler AccuBond and Federal 215 primers. Start around 51 or 52 grs. of powder and work from there.
I usually consider the .25-06 kinda light for my liking when large Mule Deer hunting but this combo worked fine on two very large bodies Muley bucks back in the 2006. Can't imagine it having much trouble with Whities if you do your job.

i like rl-25 and 120 sierra gamekings in my 25-06. my brothers both shoot a 25-06 as well, and i load for them, too. one of them runs rl-22 and 120 sierras, and the other runs h-4831 and 100 grain hornadys.
like klallen, we have all dumped some pretty big-bodied deer w/ them, and like klallen we have all pretty much shelved the 25-06's in favor of something else. this is more a product of having other guns and wanting to try other guns/chamberings than it is due to any deficiencies in the 25-06. the 25-06 makes a fantastic whitetail killer, but when chasing big-bodied mule deer, i like the 7's...

mine loves IMR 4831 with 100 grain ballistic tip and IMR 4350 with 100 grain partition. I tried several powders ,i guess my remington is just partial to IMR

I am getting ready to start reloading for my 25.06 I want to load the 110 gr accubonds and am thinking of starting out tryin rl 19 since thats what noslers book suggests gets best velocity and accuracy with that bullet but wil also later want to develop a 85 gr load too

Having used the 25-06 for at least 35 years and found it capable of most any North American game, except the big bears, I load 100, 117 & 120 grain bullets with IMR 4350 or IMR 4831. These are all moving close to or better than 3000fps. I won't give the receipes I use, but any good reloading manual will get the job done. There are some newer powders that I haven't tried that will move the 120gr bullets at > 3000fps. Great caliber!

I load the 110 gr accubond not in a 25/06, in my 25/300 WSM @ 3655 fps they knock the crap out of large bodied mule deer and white tail. I just got an Encore 25/06 that I'm just starting to work up loads for. I wasn't thinking of using the 110's in the 06 but I may later. right now I'm working with 90 gr Gamekings and RL 22.
What are the boards thoughts on this. It seams to me that a mule when hit well doesn't have the "Will to Live " that a well hit white tail does. What do you guys think?

Ihave been shooting a mod 70A for 30 years.the load is 52 gr H4831 and a Hornaday 117gr btsp.it is only 2800fps but it shoots well.I have shot them from 30 feet to 345 yds.thinking about using a tougher bullet cause sometimes it tears up something i want to eat.

hmmmmmm. never really thought about it. guess i've always equated an animal being "well hit" to an animal being on the ground asap.
i've killed far more mulies then whitetail. mulies are my preference, by far. i've had them drop on impact from a .25-06 (110 gr. accubond) and .264winmag (120 gr. ballistic tip) and others absorb very hard hits from a 7mmrum (160 gr. accubond) and 7.82warbird (180 gr. accubond) and keep going, for a bit, anyway. the very few whitetail i've taken have all dropped where they stand.
in short, based on what i've seen, i couldn't definitively say one over the other had a stronger "will to live".

Well I rethough my question and situation And after thinking about it here's what I come up with. most of my hunting is done here in Maryland and here we use shotgun, muzzel loader, or Bow. I have taken , with those weapons two many whitetail to count. Those include many crop damade permit deer. When speaking of rifle harvests they break down more like this. One white tail buck in West Virginia hit with a .35 Remington. He went about 40 yards down hill after being center punched in the chest broadside. Not a very high power round.
Next, an avrage sized white tail about 150 or 60 dressed out hit with a 7mm mag about 50 yards out. Probally went another 50 yards or so in the snow.
My first Mulie 219 yards with the same 7mm mag 3 misses. That was my first time out west shooting "Long range" but that silly little buck just kept running circles till I hit him. and he went maybe ten yards after I calmed down got a good rest and hit him.
My next Mulie was hit at just over 100 yards using a 300 WSM. It was loaded with a 150 gr balistic tip over 68 gr of IMR 4350. Ahhh my first deer with my own handload. He made a nice little 4 or 5 foot half circle. He was quartered away and I still have the copper jacket. It was just under the cape on the off side
Then came My bigest white tail. The one in my avitar 150 yard shot from a 270 WSM model 70 super shadow. One shot broke his back. He went 3 feet straight down snd never even twitched. That samegun helped me make my longesr shot. Just a hair under 500 yards. My first shot was high and when the guy spotting for me said "Your high" I had to ask if he meant I was shooting over the deer or if that was his way of saying I was crazy. My second shot hit hime square in the chest and I lost hin in the grass until he raised his head one last time. He never took a step.
My next three Mulie's were all taken with my wildcat 25/300 WSM with the 110 gr. Accubond. They all .. hold on . Let me think. They all dropped straight to the ground. Two were DOA and one did thrash for just a second or two.
So after thinking about it for a while I guess my statement was biased because of the number of white tail that were taken back east in thickets where I had to go look for them and with low velosity weapons. So for now I retract my statement. For now. I need to do more ...Umm ... research.

I had a real nice little whitetail make about 35 yards spraying blood out of both holes of entry and exit with my Ruger 25-06 and 120 grain BST.
double lung shot.
I haven`t had a runner yet with my 25-06 AI and 120 Grain Sierras..
I am not sure if it is the velocity impact or the terminal performance inside the animal.
But the Ack smacks the shit out of em..
Tears a coyote at 481 yards a new asshole through his shoulders as well
The 25-06 Ack is not a super weapon though..I lost a boar hog I plowed right behind the shoulders with..120 yards out,real easy shot.I cranked in on him at 12 power, touched off a Screamin fast quarter bore pill on him.I heard a THWAP ya wouldnt believe.
He layed over squealing to beat all hell and just went still.I figured him dead..10 seconds later he was up and movin to the brush..
I found him the next day about 30 yards from where I plowed him..
Umm 7mm Mag, you fellas must be shootin a might far off a heart shot..I`ve never had a whitetail go past 10 yards hit with a 150 grain Win BST..Most are bang flop shots.Only a scant few made it more than a jump to die where they hit the dirt..
I am not sure what a 7mm Mag does on elk,but if its as handy as it is on whitetails..
I have never hunted mule deer.We dob`t have them in this part of Tejas and I aint paying 4000 for a guided hunt mulie.I`ll keep my money and keep searching for a 200 inch Whitetail with double drops.
I`d like to hunt em but honestly ,big whitetails and more so calling ....COYOTES are my passions
My father hunted mule deer.The fella he used to work for owned a 22,000 acre ranch in the Big Bend country near Alpine,Texas.
He used only one rifle and one bullet always.
A Remington 700 in 270 Winchester with a 130 grain bullet.
Popped em on the spot.He told me thats all the rifle you`d ever need for a mulie.maybe more than ya need.
He still has that rifle,uses it for whitetails as well.In 25 years he has never cared for nor wanted any other rifle to hunt with.He is humble but he is one hell of a rifle shot which I figure adds to his liking of that 270.For him it is all he needed.Dad doesn`t hunt anymore,diabetes and he developed lung cancer and had one lung removed partially.
He can`t hump the mountains anymore.
The rifle still is in his cabinet,as it should be..
Same for me with my 300 Win Mag.I have often thought it could be my one carry rifle but it`d be a bit too much for yotes at 25 feet.

Saw the results of a guy that hit an elk at about 100 yds in the heart area. Probably using factory ammo. Lungs and heart were like jelly. Don't remember if the bullet came out on opposite side. One shot. This was a 5X4 in northern New Mexico.

i use sierra 120 gr bullets ,imr 4350(49.6gr),rem 25-06 brass,win large rifle primers.dropped 4 mule deer,4 black bears and 1 moose the gun, does a wonderfull job with this load ,its a ruger m77. my wife shoots it now since i worked the load up for it and she's got 2 mule deer with it also,nice cartridge choice for medium range shooting up to about 350 yrds
