Ironworker, I get .42" 5 shot groups with my .257 Wby Mag Vanguard. I'm shooting the 100 grain Sierra Game King.  My .257 has significantly less recoil than my 30-06, but it still packs quite a wallup.  I love my Vanguard--just can't believe it shoots so well. Also, it is absolutely devastating on whitetail deer.

Ironworker,

I have gotten several 3 shot groups in the 1/2 " range with 100gr. bullets and around 7/8" groups with 115 BT. This is with Weatherby factory ammo. All Vanguards are supposed to shoot 11/2 in. groups or better.

I know for sure it has become my favorite rifle in short order. It just seems to be the one I pick up.

Now I have to start working up some handloads.

I have two .257 WBYs, a vanguard 24 inch barrel and a Mark V 26 inch barrel, I dont notice the difference in velocity, cause every animal ive shot with them dropped like a ton of bricks.

Its one helluva cartridge, and if you think its devastating on deer,  you ought to see what it does to coyotes.

:troll:Its rediculous for us to squabble over a 100 FPS in view of your comments. So with your Mark V is there a difference in accuracy? Mark Vs are not known for being good shooters.

a note on the vanguard I won a sporter in 257 wby this spring and sold it!  I always wanted a 257 wby but I did not like this gun the finish on the metal wsa null and the wood was ok but had som imperfections and the trigger was crap.  so If you get one count on spending money on the trigger! and pending on shat else you want maybe the mark V is worth it.

Maybe the Mark V's are not known to be good shooters, but the ones i have are.... I bought it from Roy Weatherby himself, When his store used to be located in South Gate California. I bought it on July 24, 1974. ( I still have the sales slip )  It was made in Germany and when i was shooting it, it would shoot minute of angle at 100 yards.

I havent shot it in years, because  I Dont want to fry the chamber, thats why i have the vanguard.

The other Mark V i have is in .300 Wby Mag, My dad bought it in 1964, Its also made in Germany and i shot my Moose with it three years ago, it will also shoot minute of angle. I take it out about once a year and crank a couple of rounds through it.

Here is my Mark V .257 Wby mag.

And my .300

:shameon: Its not fair! I clicked on Weatherby web site. I really like the look of the Mark V Accumark in 257. But they want $1500 bucks !:groaner: Now Remington has a limited edition rifle in 257. They want $900 bucks. Problem is I don't like the stock.:banned:I've looked at the various Vangards. :kissit: Glad to here they shoot great. They just don't have the look I want:rofl: Today just isn't my day. So here's the deal I want some one from this forum to give me a MV accumark in 257.After I receive the rifle I will begin accepting donations for a US optics scope. If these conditions are not met.I'll feel rejected.:kneel:

To me, the beauty of a rifle is how well it performs. My Vanguard required I put a Timney trigger on it to meet my accuracy expectations. Now I have a Boyd's stock on order for the looks.

This is still less expensive than the MK V.

I love my Vanguard.

Its true,   Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, My vanguards are butt ugly, But when I squeeze  the trigger, I see and hear   Bang  Flop!   then I kiss that ugly son of a gun.  I'm in love with the .257 Wby mag cartridge and I really dont care that the Vanguard is ugly.

P.S. If nobody meets your  conditions, and you start to feel rejected,  You can always call  Dr Laura and talk to her on the radio.  lol.

I I guess for some emotional reason have to have the "Cool effect" in a rifle. Half the enjoyment of firearm ownership to me is taking them out of the safe leaning them up against the TV and look at them while I watch TV.

Nothing wrong with that!........Although  when you have a Mark V you dont stand them up against the TV.....You stroke and fondle them.

One other thing I forgot, I hear a lot of people say that they dont like the blueing on the vanguard. I always use Johnsons paste wax on my rifles, I apply two or three coats, help seal the pores and water just runs off of it, It also brightens up the blueing a little. Not a lot, kbut it helps,

I too, want one of the Remington offerings. One thing for sure, it will have to have very good accuracy to outshoot my Vanguard.    Gary
