Does anybody know what kind of velocity you can expect out of the vanguard ? I have heard various opinions, some say 257 wby needs the 26" barrel others say not much diffrent in a 24" anyone have actual velocity figures out of the vanguard ?

I don't have a chrony so I can't give a specific answer to your question; however, from the trajectories I'm getting with my reloaded 100 grain and 117 grain bullets, I've got to be close to (but not quite as good as) the published ballistics for the .257 Wby Mag. I've been shooting my Vanguard 335 yds (the farthest distance I can shoot at my personal gun range). I am extremely happy with my 24" Vanguard and have no regrets that its not the 26" barrel.
(I doubt that anyone will get the same velocities as those published by Wby even with their 26" barrels.)

The difference in most rifles would be about 150 fps more with the 26 inch over the 24 inch , not enough to worry about in the real world of hunting. Vel depends on more than just barrel length. Chamber dimension's , throating has as much to do with vel as the extra two inch of barrel, so a 24 inch barrel cut with a tight chamber will give as much vel as a 26 inch barrel with a sloppy or loose cut chamber . Wby's tend to have a lot of free bore in most of their rifles and this means you have to load few more grains of powder to get the same pressure as chambers cut without the free bore.

thanks,
Been thinking I could use another rifle, didn't want to bother with the 257wby if ya don't gain much on the 25-06, already have one of those in ruger77 heavy barrel. vanguard only has 24" barrels so didn't know? Mark V would be nice as they come with a 26" barrel. But they are also higher priced. So the choice is this, beautiful Mark V and angry wife or... cheaper vanguard and happy wife... hmmm somthing to think about.

have shot deer with 30-06 and alot with 7 mag and couple with 300 mag but the 6 deer I have gotten with the 25-06 were just as dead just as fast ya know, kinda like bang ! flop. just wish it wasn,t a heavy barrel. seems like a good excuse for another gun and it will be a 257 wby or a 25-06.

I get 3480's in my Weatherby Vanguard with 24" barrel. My chrony is a Competition Electronics Chrony. I also get 3350's with a115 gr. Ballistic Tips. These are factory loads from Weatherby. I haven't started reloading for the .257 Roy yet. Hope this helps you some. Gary

Ironworker,
Yes I get 3480 with 100 gr bullet. I really shocked me. I was kind of sceptical about a 24" barrel too. A big plus is the rifle shoots like a dream. Gary

300 RUM gives me a lot of hard hitting performance, even though the book says the velocity was done with a 24 inch barrel, I think all of the 300 RUM rifles I have seen were 26 inch.
With all of the high velocity rifles, the quality and construction of the bullet becomes critical. I like the solids and the Barnes TSX bullets.

I think bullet placement is 2nd to none. I shot a Black Bear with a 300 RUM 200 gr Accubond in front of 95grs of retumbo. MV was 3200. Guide entire trip was telling me to try and shoot him behind the ear !!!!. Well there he was on the side of a tree 100 yards away 1st shot shattered his shoulder,2nd broke his neck 3rd one sent him crashing to the forest floor dead. Point is even after shattereing his shoulder and braking his neck he needed one more.

Ironworker,
I plan on using the 300 RUM for Elk, but I know it will work on bear also. Thanks for that info. I lean towards the Barnes solids for large game, less meat damage and more energy to go thru bones with, or lets say that is my obeservation.
The Barnes 200gr TSX has a max load of 86 Grains of Retumbo in a 300 RUM, but I will be using Norma Magnum Rifle powder, which the max load is 97 garins behind the same bullet. Yes you are pushing 3,000fps with these loads. For Elk, I would consider the 168gr TSX, but for bigger bears, I would use a the 220 TSX bullets.
Most rifles don't give me any pain in my shoulder when shooting them, but my 300 RUM, I put a Pachmayr’s Decelerator slip on pad over the Remington recoil pad that came with my Rem 700c. Now it isn't that bad to shoot more than 5 to 10 times.
I may go out to the gun club's range Sunday and try this out. Of course if Mr. Ground Hog pops up, be may get torn into pieces with the 300 RUM.
Take care,
Jerry

I had a "State of the Art" recoil pad on mine, plus a Vias Muzzle brake. That brake made a huge difference.Yes it did sound like an Atom Bomb !So what ,just be careful to warn all people around to wear ear protection and stand back.Hey when I shot that Bear I didn't feel any recoil, or hear the gun go off! I had no ear muffs on either. Strange how that happens.

Ironworker, No I have just a plain Synthetic Vanguard. The only changes I have made on it, is to have a Timney trigger installed and set at 2.5 lbs. The trigger made a world of difference. Gary

I've heard about great performance of the vanguards. So what size groups? 3 shot or 5 ? How's the recoil? Now I'm tempted.

I was planning on putting a Smith's muzzle break on mine, but at the moment, I need to run more power out to the machine shop, before I can cut the thread on to the barrel muzzle. That should be done this week or the next.
Here is the one I was planning on:
