I just checked Midway and Midsouth for some 300 RUM brass, all of theirs is on back order. I find that this cartridge is very interesting, it is a hard hitter. Probably take almost anything in the world with it.

A couple of people have said this round will probably fade away, but I am having a heck of time finding brass. I have run into several people who hunt with this cartridge, with a muzzle break and a better recoil pad that the factory uses.

The case consumes a lot of powder when reloading, 90 to 100 grains and it is capable of throwing a 220 Barnes SRN bullet out at 2,900 fps which is over 4,000 pounds over energy at the barrel.

So the Remington 700 may not be the best rifle for this round, but I think the 300 RUM is here to stay.

Any one else out shooting this cartridge? I plan on Elk hunting in Kentucky next season with this rifle. It should give me a knock down kill at 100 to 200 yards.

Im glad they still had some , i was having the same problem. I was looking everywhere also. You ever try any of the military surplus powder ? WC 860 or WC872 ? Ive read good and bad about it , mostly good though . I was thinking about putting a post on here to ask everyone and also see if anyone had any luck with the 210 berger bullets. I dont have the gun in yet im just gathering info and parts before it gets here.      steve

Steve,

Think about Barnes Bullets for the 300 RUM. The key to these rifles is to find a Remington 700c. Then work the rifle from there.

Thanks for the tip,

Jerry

i really like what the rum's do - i think the 300 and 338-300 rum are fantastic.

i have a couple of 7 rums, and am kind of hot and cold w/ them. i love the superior ballistics of the 7mm, but i find the necks split pretty easy. i guess something has to give - getting 95 grains of retumbo out of that little hole isn't easy!

I still see that Remington is still chambering most of it's 700 line in 300 RUM so I don't think it's fading away.

For me, a guy with a 30-06, the 300 RUM or 300 Weatherby Mag make more sense ballistically for hunting than the 300 WSM or 300 Win. Mag.  In fact, I considered some sort of 300 mag on my last gun project.  However, I settled on a 338 Win. Mag. instead.

Still, I'd love a 300 magnum of some sort and since the 300 RUM offers the biggest jump in 30 caliber ballistics from the good ol '06, there's a good chance I'll end up with one in my gun safe sometime in the future.

Tobehunted,

I was given some 860 and it works very well. If I could have gotten a 55 oil drum filled with 860 I would have been extremely happy for a couple of decades.

Mountaineer

The reason I got the 300 RUM it is not a "+P" version of the 30-06, it is a big jump in energy.

Some people have said they have found Rem 700s/300RUM in the bargain used rifle aisle of their gun stores. I have not seen any of these rifles there.

I loaded some Nosler 150 gain Ballistic Tip bullets, once I adjusted the scope, I sat waiting for a coyote.  I shot one at about 120 yards, maybe less or maybe more. Think about 105mm Howitzer shooting your car, then think about what this coyote was like. That puppy was torn to pieces.

Hey jerry, im gonna have to try that 860. I still dont have the gun in yet , maybe the end of this month or the beginning of next so i have a little time to keep gathering powder bullets and brass. Ive got reloader 25 , retumbo, IMR 7828 all to try plus those berger 210s , nosler accubonds  in 180 and 200 grain and ballistic tips in 180grain. I got Rem , CCI  and Fed all in magnum primers. I would like to try some sierra 210 gr BTHP maybe .  I will be a loadin shootin fool whenever that gun gets in ! Its gonna have a kreiger barrel on it so i should be able to find a really decent load with all the componets i got already. If you work up a load with that 860 can you let me know ?      thanks steve
