Does anyone reload 30-30 winchester with pointed bullets? So far I've only used rn bullets, but to get a flatter trajectory on greater distance I've been wondering if I should use pointed bullets instead. If anyone has some reloading data for 30-30win and pointed bullets and wants to share them with me I would be very thankful . Thanks!

Use standard start data for the bullet weight, and work up. If you are loading for a tube feed rifle, you will have a two shot rifle...tubular magazines and spitzer bullets aren't a good combination. If you are loading for one of the bolt guns, like a Remington 788 or Savage 340, no problems. I load 125 grain spitzers for a Savage and it works pretty well. I'd be wary of anything over 150 grains, though. Many of those require more retained velocity to expand than the .30/30 can give them.

I know Hornady makes a 160 Gr. "Lever Revolution" ammo. Its a 160 Gr. bullet with a polymer flex tip. Its been around since 2006. I have seen the loaded ammunition for it but havent found any bullets for sale for reloading.

I just spoke with a reloading technician at Hornady and they stated that the "Lever Revolution" bullets (heads) will be on sale in early of 2009.

Thanks for the replies to both of you !

I have a Marlin tubular feed rifle so I will have to use it with one cartridge in the chamber and one in the magazine, but that will work out fine. My intention is to load some cartridges using Hornady's 110grs v-max bullets.

I've tried Hornady's Leverevolution ammunition and it works perfectly but I miss the opportunity of buying the bullets for home reloading. It's however positive to hear that Hornady plans to release these bullets for sale next year. I've been waiting for the news .

I've been loading pointed bullets in the ammo for my Marlin 30-30 lever gun for years now. I load one in the chamber first and then I load another in the magazine. That way I have a follow-up shot if needed (which is rare).

I've been shooting a 130 gr Hornady jacketed soft points with 33 gr of H335. It is very accurate and does a great job on whitetail deer.

Good luck

For years I have used the following load in an NEF 30-30 single shot. It should work fine for any rotary  or box magazine.

150 gr Sierra Spitzer

33 gr H335

Winchester primer

Rem or Win case

Above load chronoed at 2276 fps, as much energy at 200 yds asa factory 150 gr loads at 100 yds.

ENJOY:cool:

In truth, the idea of chambering one and putting only one in the tube would worry me personally.  I think I'd get creative with a mag block of some sort similar to the limiters in shotgun tubular mags.  Somehow, I just KNOW I'd screw up.

I still have approx 225 of the Sierra 135 gr spitzer SS 30 cal bullets left; no longer made and need to work up a load for them in my NEF. Have you ever tried them and if so what load.

That single shot pistol bullet is great with the 30-30 velocity range. i always did use IMR 3031, velocity right at 2400 fps, would shoot cloverleafs from a Contender carbine.
