Does anyone have a pic of a 7mm rem mag case with separation starting?  I have quite the shiny band just above the belt on 60 cases that should all be once fired.  I have tried sticking a bent paperclip in to feel for a catch, but dont really notice anything (although Ive never had one actually separate to compare the feel with).  I'm hoping it was just the case expanding from the inital firing.  It's all WIN brass if that helps anyone.  They would have all been pretty mild starting loads, and all are FL sized (just havnt got around to getting a neck die yet).

Don't have a 7mm but I do have experience with head separations. I once bought a new Hornady die set for 30/06 to start reloading for my M1.

I didn't have measuring equipment at the time and the die turned out to be 0.015" short. Of the first 60 rounds I fired I had about 20 separtions. Very disturbing.

If you have measuring equipment and an unresized case check its lenght and check the length of a resized case to see how much the shoulder is pushed back. Even though belted magnums are supposed to head space on the belt after firing they should be head spaced to the shoulder.

The bright ring might not be an indication of incipient separation. There could be a some thing in the chamber that causes it to burnish that spot, unlikely but possible. I would be careful with those cases myself though.

ilike to hunt,

The paperclip method doesn't tell you what you need to know, unless you have the sensitive hands of a surgeon.   You can measure the case thickness with the RCBS Case Master, and know for sure.   Our website shows this tool, and it explains several other reloading mysteries, especially relating to belted magnums.

72coupe is right.  The initial firing of belted cases is always a very big stretch that can quickly make cases separate when handloaded.  You really need to measure your headspace clearance at the shoulder, and keep that clearance to -.002" or less.   For more information about reloading belted magnums visit our website (below).

I still wish I had the case to show you as it was a pain to get out.. I don't have a paper clips but a piece of thin welding rod make sure it's bent 90 degrees and keep it sharp.. The 90 deg gets it flush to the bottom and when coming up it'll snag on the seperation ring if it has one.. I also twist the brass so I the same on 3-4 sides.. I have two 7mm rifles and try and NOT get the brass mixed or you’re asking for problems. One of mine obviously does not have a very tight chamber.. DH

DHH45,

I've seen a jillion cases like you described.  Take a look at the "Reloading Questions & Answers" section on my website, and you'll be able to make your handloads fit in ANY of your 7mm rifles.   You'll see that sometimes, the SAME rifle will not chamber its own brass after being reloaded a few times.   This is caused by forces on the case during reloading, and the inability of conventional dies to properly resize belted cases.

Our new Digital Headspace Gauge will help you avoid headspace separation.  It's easy to use, it works on all calibers from .22 Hornet to 416 Rem. Magnum, and it doesn't require special tools or bushings to operate.  You can read all about this patented tool on our website.
