Bought a new Ruger hawkeye in .358 I would like to get some good 200 grn and 250 grn loads.August issue of Handloder had some with TAC but that is a hard powder to find around here. Any alternatives ? Like to hear about your experience with the .358 Thanks

Welcome to the HB Bear Hunter. I have never loaded for a .358 but I am sure someone here has.

I would start here for more info. Mostly Hodgdon and IMR powder.

I use to load  the 358 Win for the Browning Lever Action and used IMR 4064, but if i was going to load today for the 358 , then Benchmark would be the first powder i would try.

Bear Hunter,

I own a Hawkeye in 358 and it seems to like the WW748 powder. I loaded several bullets and had varying results.  I loaded 52.2 grains of 748 with the Hornady 200 grain Spire Point and the same powder load with the 200 grain RN. The spire point was marginal. The RN fell inside 3/4 inch. I also tried 50 grains under the Speer 220 FP and it shot with the Hornady RN. I tried 48 grains under the Nosler 225 partition and the results were marginal. Marginal to me is 1 1/2 to 2 inch range. Have not loaded any 250 grainers. I've always liked the 200 grain RN for the 35 cal. (350 Rem Mag, 356, 35 Whelen). All loads were taken from the specific bullet reloading manuals with all loads being below max.

I may try some other powders in the future. Rifle is relatively new so I have not had too much time to play aothough 3/4 inch with my poor eyesight is not bad. WW748 may not suit for your rifle but it sure worked for mine. Worth a try.

CC
