I have different Ack Imp chambered rifles but the 280 Ack is my favorite. I have taken a number of big game amimals with this cal. It will do what the 7mm Mag will, with a lot less powder. I use two loads for all my hunting in this rifle . My number one load is the Speer 160 Flat Base with Hod. 4831. I have killed a number of deer and one black bear with this load. My rifle shoots this load into a ragged hole at one hundred yard. Every big game animal i have shot including the bear went down in its tracks. The other load i am useing is the Nosler CT BT 150 gr with Rel 22 . This load is very flat shooting and very accurate in my rifle. The rifle is a LH Model 700 with 23.5 inch Dougles Barrel , match grade SS and is stocked in a High Tech fiberglass stock . I had the rifle finshed in the Enduraguard Hard Chrome Matte and it has a 3x9 Matte Zeiss scope. If i had to own just one rifle for all my hunting, it would be the 280 Ack. Here is a photo of the bear i took in Canada with the 160 Speer in the 280 Ack.

Bea175,
You are right on with this round one of the more popular wildcats I build rifle for on standard 06 case. For North American big game hunting it would be hard pressed to find something the 280 AI could not handle.
I also agree on the accuracy potential, Even with fireforming loads, getting a group over 3/4" at 100 yards is unusual from my testing. The 280 AI reamer has paid for its self several times over.
Good post and great bear.

I have the 280 Ack, 257 Bob Ack, 22-250 Ack, and the 338-06 Ack. I do like wildcat rounds with the 40 degree shoulder. I tried the 22-250 RCBS Imp but didn't like the 28 degree shoulder and had it rechambered to the 40 degree.

beal175,
Glad you like the .280 AI. I have the regular .280, and nothing I have shot with it has ever taken a second step. I am a big fan of the .284 class calibers. I have three chamerings for .284, the .280 Rem., 7mm-08 Rem, and a new 7mmWSM. I don't handload currently, but when I start, I want to AI my 700 BDL in .280. I feel comfortable up tp elk, hunting with the .284 calibers, and would through black bear in the mix as well. Great Caliber!! Also a nice bear.

I'm having a .280 Ack. Imp. built on an old Springfield action now. Looking forward to getting it to the range and seeing what it can do. I'm gonna tailor my load around the 140 gr. AccuBond, if I can get them to shoot well. Got the 7mm RUM going with the 160 gr. AccuBonds and they worked great this last hunting season. Hoping for the same with the 140's and .280. Later. >> klallen

Use Rel 22 for the 280 Ack. or Hod 4831. With the 280 Ack. i started with the max load in the book for the standard 280 and went from there.

I've got R22 powering things in the .264 WinMag and .25-06 so there's plenty of it on the shelf. Looks like it's as good a powder as any to start development with. >> klallen

Just thought you guys may be interested in this. Here is an example of what the 280 AI will do even with fireforming loads. I have always found a properly chambered AI rifle to shoot to right around 1/2 moa with fireforming loads.

I finished this little darling up this morning after the three days of bedding curing and took her to the range for testing. The scope is a Weaver Tactical 4.5-14x which I use for testing all of my sporter and tactical rifles. The stock is a H-S Precision Tacitcal in green, tan camo. The barrel is a 27" #7 Lilja 1-9" 6 groove.

These are the first two, three shot groups fired with this rifle at 100 yards, using the 140 gr Accubond over 57.0 gr Rl-19. Again these groups were fired from Virgin R-P 280 Rem cases.
It just goes to show that a fireforming load is generally very worthy of field use. Or even varmint quality accuracy. I never tested the rifle with formed brass, it will be a 1/4 moa rifle no doubt, no sense doing further testing.
Good Shooting!!

Great looking rifle, i have found the fire forming loads shoot as good as the formed cases in just about all of my Ack chambered rifles, except the last 50 cases i formed. I used Unique and Cream of Wheat to form them. What is the weight on your 280 and is the barrel a # 5 contour? Good groups. My 280 Ack was built for carrying and big game hunting in the mountains so i use a 23.5 inch # 2 contour SS Dougless barrel ,Rem Mod. 700 LH action and High Tech's super light glass stock from Mark Bansner. I had the the medal finished in Matte Hard Chrome , Enduraguard. and have the 3x9 Zeiss on it .

The rifle as pictured weighed right at 9 lbs.
It has a #7 contour Lilja though, not a #5.
I am building a rifle for my personal use chambered for my own 6.5mm Allen Magnum using a Fluted #4 Lilja, 27" 1-9 barrel. Stock will be a McMillan Hunters Edge(22 oz) and a Fully prepped Rem 700. Looking to get rifle weight in the 7 1/2 lb range with this extreme round and see how she runs.
Will post results when finished.
Good Shooting!!

Very nice rifle Fifty.I am growing fonder of the 7mm`s and the 280 is impressive,if for a vast bullet selection more than anything else.
