| Does anyone have any info about loads for 30.06 using H 4831. I found the load I have loaded from the Hodgdon web site load data back in 2006. The 2008 Hodgdon load book doesn't have any loads using H-4831 nor does the web site. The load I used from the 2006 data is as follows, 60 to 61 grains H-4831 over a 150 gr Sierra G-K. I seat the bullet .10 in from the lands. The only odd sign i've seen is a slightly flat primer. It shoots a one quarter inch group. Now after all that the question is does anyone know if this is a safe load and where the load data using 4831 powder in the .06 can be found.

| Have my new 2008 Hodgdon manual in front of me, H4831 is not listed until you get a bullet of 175 grs and over. I have made the switch to Varget for everything I currently load in rifle. Makes it look as if it is only compatible for heavy bullets. I think I remember using H4831 for my 7mm mag and 300 win mag years ago, I do not recall them being overally accurate rifles--I no longer own them.

| I've used a very similar load. It is safe, IME, but not particularly effecient.

in the 5th editionof the sierra manual
150gr bullet using h4831 sc min 56.0gr max 59.6gr and says the max load is the most accurate load
also sierra has free tech support at 1(800)223-8799 and they can give you all kinds of loads to play with
hope that helps

My Hodgdon Manual #26 (1992) shows the following for 150 gr bullet and H4381:
Powder: H4381
Barrel tested: 26"
Primer: Large Rifle
(no info on brand of case or primer used, or COL)
Start: 56.0 gr, 2366 fps, 30,000 CUP
Max: 61.0 gr, 2825 fps, 43,400 CUP
Since COL and other data is missing you should definitely use starting load and work up. I assume they must have used the maximum COL.

I don't think you can get enough H4831 in a 3006 case to get you into trouble.
I have used 50+ pounds of the old surplus H4831 in my M70 3006 in the last 40 years without a problem. When Hodgdon ran out of the surplus stuff, they had it made in Scotland, I believe, to the same pressure levels as the old powder. My loads used the same amount of powder after the switch to the newer and I couldn't tell the difference in accuracy, case measurements, or "reading" the primers. 61gr behind a 165gr bullet worked well also. Even tried 62gr behind a 150 gr with good enough results to drop a deer or two.
Nowadays, I can afford many more types of powder, but for bullets lighter than 180gr, I like H414.. And still use 60gr H4831 for 180gr bullets.
60gr of H4831 with a 180 gr bullet was supposed to get out of the barrel at 2700fps. One other plus.. Standard primers ignite this powder!! The COL is listed at 3.340", but watch the bullet ogive.. At this length, some bullets may stick in the bbl throat, depending on the rifle. If you have to extract that round, you may find out the hard way--like I did--The mag fills up with powder, and the bullet knocked out of the leade.
I told my Grandson after he broke his hand on someone's head..." Just remember, son, heads are harder than hands".. When he gets older, I hope he remembers his old Grandpa's advice .

For bullets in the 150 gr class, you will get much better loads with 4350, 4895 or even 3031. I load 58 gr 0f 4831 for my .06 for 180 gr Game Kings, and 57 gr for 220 gr RN.
Like 3006 user, years ago I used 4831 exclusively as it was 42 cents lb or so.I shot a lot of competition with 150 gr APs and pulled ball ammo with 60 gr of 4831. In fact the common practice was to dip the case in a bowl of powder to get it filled , tap it on the bench and fill some more and then seat the bullet. You can't do that with anything over 175 grs though

if you look at pilgrims post you will see exactly why they don't list it with
4831, the pressure isn't high enough for good burn and this can lead to inconsistencies.
a faster powder would be in order here 4350 414 something like that.
even rl-19 which burns extremely well in a x57 case doesn't burn well in the 0-6
the new short cut version may use a bit more powder in the case and generate higher pressures/velocities.
you can always call hodgdons they will actually talk to you on the phone.

Fella's;
Speer #14 shows several loads using their bullets in the .30-06 and either H4831SC, or IMR4831. Only with the heavier bullets though.
