Looking for a good recipe for 405gr bullet out of bolt action with 20" tube. I'm just putting the finishing toughs on a Siamese mauser action rebarrelled to 45-70. I've been shooting Marlin lever guns in this caliber for elk a long time. I load 59gr H4895 under 350gr JFP Hornady with Win LRP primers, this works great with a 26" barrel, but I want to get close to the 458 Win with the bolt action. What can I get with this short tube? I need a load that will take care of the elephants in the garden.
Thanks,
W.D..

| I'd look to 3031 powder. It's might slower than4895 I belivee and always gave me good accuracy in a 45-70. I don't belive the short barrel is going to matter much.

Saddlesore,
IMR 3031 burns faster than than H4895, not slower,
but I know what you ment to say. You just got your diamond hitch confused with your squaw hitch.
Thank you,
W.D.

| if 400 fps less is close then you will make it. that is about as close to the 458 win that you will get. about 2000 fps with a 400 gr.

264,
I had 2 model 336 Marlins befor I bought the 1895CB Marlin I've had for the last 6 years, anyway I used to shot #7 Reloader with 405gr bullits in them, it worked good, killed at booth ends. I bought the 1895 because of the 26" barrel, and went to the 350gr load mentioned above to get better trajectory. My 350gr loads conogragh at 2,050-60fps, sighted dead on at 100yds it drops 71/2" at 200yds. Where I hunt here in the Cascade mountains, since they quit clearcut logging there are few places you can see more than 200yds, hence I can shoot minute of elk as far as I can see. I've built this Siamese Mauser, mostly just to see how much I can get out of the 45-70. The 20" barrel came with the action and trigger guard, it was already cut and in the action, but not finished or crowned, I got it cheap. If it where longer I would have just poured more H4895 into the case and gone from there. The reserch I've done points toward IMR3031, like saddlesore said, and H335, I've not loaded either one, and would like some feedback on both. I'm also thinking RL#7. I dunno.
W.D.
P.S. I put a 1-4 Leopold VX 2 on this gun, on 1 power you can see the end of the barrel. Field of veiw wide enough for elephant.Last edited on 26 September 2008 08:26 AM by CapnMidnight

Finaly got the elephant gun put together, went to the range last week and tried some different loads. Tried H335 @ 62 & 63gr, IMR 3031 @ 57 & 58gr, and RL-7 @ 52 & 53gr. Got the best grouping from the RL-7, IMR 3031 was also pretty good. Went back today and did some more work, and as of now have settled on 52.5grs RL-7. This is pushing Hornady 350gr RN, not run any across the connogragh yet, but I did measure the chamber lenth, and ran the overall lenth out to 2.742", and used a light factory tapper crimp. It will hold 1" at 100yds pretty cosistantly. I put a mercury tube in the stock when I was building it, one of my better ideas. I shot 30 rounds off the bench last thursday working up loads, and am alive to tell about it. Didn't have access to any good 400gr bullets, and elk season starts saterday, so I'm going with the 350 gr for now, latter I'll try to find some 400gr Woodleigh, or other quality bullets and work a load up for them. Thanks for all of the input on powder choices.
W.D.
ps. Who else makes a GOOD 400gr bullet??? Woodliegh is spendy.$$$$

| a bullet made for the magnums should hold together well at the velovity reachable by the 45/70.

Sorry Capn Midnight..All I shoot is the 300 grain Hornady JHP..
That handles even the baddest boar hog or whitetail buck here in the Texas hill country..
Lots of 45-70 shooters on the board, someone has to shoot the 405`s

A friend called me yeterday and told me he found an older manual that had 55.8gr RL-7 as the max for the 350gr jacketed bullet. I loaded a few last night to 54.5grs and they group just as good as the 52.5gr load, supposed to be a little over 2100fps. The book I was using had 53grs as the max, older books always have hotter loads, although you can't go back to far for good 45-70 loads. Anyway, got to go and load elk loads.
