I am new to reloading as my quiestion will show.. But I am going to be reloading 223 shells using a lee single stage press.  My question is, should i clean my brass before I deprime using the collet die or should I use the collet die and then clean?  I have read that the cases should be clean first so not to damage the die's but I have also read that the shells should be deprimed before cleaning.  I dont have a tumbler yet, will it make a difference in the order when I get one?

I am using factory brass that has been once fired from the same rifle I am loading for so from what I understand the only die it will need is the collet and bullet seeting die.

If I use brass fired from another rifle I know I will need to full lenth size... Should I be looking for something that deprimes those cases before I clean and resize those rounds?

Thanks for any help

Hello adamson,
All my equipment is RCBS, and I use a universal decaping die to remove my primers before I put them in the tumbler, its a little extra work but it does help clean the primer pockets. The die does not touch the outside of the brass and can be used on all calibers. Reloading is not something to rush through. I take my time and reload
during the winter. If you have any more ? feel free to email me and I will help all I can. I reload for several different cartridges. Good luck,,,,,,Savage

As long as your brass is reasonably clean, it doesn't really matter. I wouldn't run grungy range pickup brass thru any die without cleaning it, but since it has been fired in your rifle, and I assume ejected and put back in the box, you can do whatever is easier for you.

Deprimg dies are cheap, and everybody makes one. Might be something to pick up for later use.

Savage, what is this "winter" you speak of? Around here, we've got "summer" and "not summer".

Thanks for the info.  I got my hornady book in today and have started reading it.  I've got another quick question though.  Is a Hornady 50 grn FMJ going to use the same load as another brand 50 grn FMJ or should I look for a manual for the specific brand I would be laoding?.  I purchased the Hornady because thats what I plan to shoot but if I were to try say, Nosler would I load the same?

Thanks guys

Adamson,To answer your question, the Hornadys and noslers may not load the same. It depends on the ogive or curvature of the bullet, the amount of bearing surface of the bullet on the lands and the hardness of the jacket materials. Seating depths and OAL may vary as the seating stem usually rides on the ogive during seating and this may vary in length fron the contact point to the front or back of the bullet, or both. The best advice for any change in components is always the same. Start low and work up. I usually reduce by 5% from starting loads and work up a % at a time until I reach max recommended load or see signs of pressure. You'll get a better feel for this as you go. RD

OK Charley,,,, rub it in,,,,come on up to Iowa and spend a week with me and you'll see just what winter is all about.

Not trymg to rub it in, I know it gets damned cold up in Yankee country! Just pointing out the difference...we don't really get winter here, I describe it as "not summer". Summer is hot, not summer is usually ok, with temps in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, with an occasional day in the 30s or 40s. God help us when we get the occasional snow, folks here can't drive when it rains, much less in a little ice or snow. The whole damned place shuts down.

Guess I shouldn't hijack... RD's answer is what I would say, start low and work up. All bullets are not the same, even those of the same weight.

Hey Charlie, just kidding,,,,I'm jealous,,,wish it was warm here all the time. Don't get
to shoot as much as I would like. You guys got a lot more critters to shoot at than we
do. I think we have more deer than people. Most car accidents are deer related. I have to drive all the way to South Dakota just to shoot prairie dogs. Do ya have them
in your back yard? Shoot straight buddy,,,,,,,,,,Savage

No prairie dogs around here, just coyotes, hogs, and whitetails.  I sometimes envy the folks from northern climes, I often hear about "taking it easy" during the winter.Have to/able to work outside all year long here. 'course, you can shoot and fish all year long, though.

Everything has good and bad points.
