| Just finished Dave Scovill's column from this issue. Very good read regarding accuracy and specific loads. If you haven't seen it, check it out, might open some eyes out there.

| just got around to reading it.he did make a good point about being hung up on some reloading processes in conventional wisdom in regards to accuracy, and at the same time not paying attention to others.but then every combination is different.i never had much luck partial length sizing.i only neck size for longer case life.brian pierce had a good review on bullet casting.made me want to go out and fire up the pot.that looked like a good article on 308 loads, but i havent ony more than skimmed over it yet. | The article on the extensive testing of the .308 loads was very good. There are a few months when Handloader is a clunker but most of the time it's well worth the price. I think, overall, it's the best gun magazine around.

I think, overall, it's the best gun magazine around. I just finished reading that same article. He uses the same powder and bullet I use, Hornady 168 BTHP and Varget. The biggest drawback I saw was the very expensive forged steel rifle. If I could afford that type of rifle I can afford to buy the best match grade bullets for it. Realistically, bench shooters don't have cooling fans, custom made bench rests, and so on.
I shoot a lot of .308 handloads out of my AR10B, can't mount a scope or a lot of the "extras" either. All of my brass is a mixed bag from milspec to match grade moly coated. Because it's a semi-auto I cannot and will not go to max loads like I can on my CZ-527. I also shoot 100, 200, and 300yds and when I get 4" consistently I'm very happy.
I sort of wish he would use and shoot that's more in tune to his audiende when writing these articles. I don't think article really addresses what most of the readers actually shoot.
BTW: I have shot the Remmington match .308 using .308 match bullets. The rifles were custom designed as LEO sniper rifles with 12" silencers and very light triggers. I could actually shoot one of those all day non-stop. They felt almost like shooting a .22LR. At over 8,000.00 each they should.

ar you wouldn't benefit from that article.
the point of it was to gain accuracy, you have to have an actual rifle capable of accuracy. to recognize what [if any] change is made to accuracy, by the changes made to the loads.
and anybody who has reloaded for any length of time will tell you that those changes he made are for his rifle only.
however what he did is to give an outline of how and what to change in a load to find the best one for your rifle.
and it really boiled down to a good bbl,the bullets it likes, and the amount of powder your rifle likes to shoot.and the best [most consistent] ignition.
same thing that has been said since rifling was put in a bbl.

ar you wouldn't benefit from that article. Probably not, although I did like the primer/powder matches he quoted. And we do agree on two things. The 168 BTHP, and Varget. I've been using the same combo since I got the AR. 2700fps is the max pressure and at 41.6 I'm pushing the bullet out pretty fast. It's two powder loads below the max in the Hornady manual so I figure I'm pretty much in my and the rifle comfort zone. Besides I'm able to get a good solid 8 reloads out of nearly all my brass.
