I am fairly new to reloading (about 1 year) and I am having an issue with sizing a new cartridge. I am currently pressing for the .300 RUM, and am using all new components. The Max case length is supposed to be 3.600, but when I approach that length, the brass is being damaged (buckling) at the shoulder by the die. I am using the RCBS .300 Ultra die which is also brand new. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Max case length is 2.85, according to Hornady book.

Trim length is 2.84"

Your 3.600 dimension is C.O.L (cartridge overall length)

This may be only a guide, depending on gun.

Since you have all new components, and doing for the first time, might want to check to see if everything is right.

Something is not right, but may be lost in terminology.

Brothers buddy loads for that round, but don't know much about, other than it is loud!

It is a load that may cause a slump to some people.

The old grey mare, has younger offspring;)

No need to go, if know how to do with less.

Just my opinion.

It sounds to me like you are crushing the shoulder while seating the bullet. If this is the case you need to adjust your seater die according to the instructions that came with the  die.

The way I do it is to create a cartridge with the correct bullet and overall length. I do this by not screwing the seating die all the way in and with the seating stem screwed out very far. I then try to seat a bullet. I screw the seating stem in a little at a time until I get the length of cartridge that I want.

Then I screw the seating stem out again and turn the body of the seater die down until it contacts the mouth of the case. If you want a crimp you can turn it in further until the amount of crimp you want is achieved or if you don't want a crimp turn it out 1/2 turn and adjust your lock ring to save this setting. Now turn your seating stem down until it contacts your freshly seated bullet.

Thanks you very much, I am going to try this right now. I never adjusted the seating stem, but I think I can handle it. I appreciate your assistance.
