While doing some reading in some old reloading literature I ran across a section on the 7X61 S&H. I dont recall anybody I`ve known that had a rifle chambered in this.I think it fell to the wayside with Remington`s introduction of their potent 7mm Rem Mag.Have any of you fellas ever used this cartridge ?What are your thoughts about this cartridge?:confused:

I read somewhere that Warren Page the father of the 7 mm mag , used the 7.61 S&H along with the 7mm Mashburn Mag and it worked very well . I have never seen a rifle chambered for the 7x61 but believe it should be a good big game round. :thumbs:

Prior to the advent of the 7mm Remington Mag, the 7x61 Sharpe & Hart was all the range when I was attending gunsmithing college in 1960-61.  At that time it was only available commercially in the Schultz & Larsen rifle.  Beautiful weapon.  A number of customs were build on this cartridge during my year of ed-ju-makation!  Another good cartridge down the tubes due to poor marketing, high cost and general unavailability of ammo and empty brass........Oh well...!

Fella's;

Look on page 316 of Hornady #6, the current edition.  Lo & egad!  There it is!

If you want first hand experience, I'd suggest contacting Dale Storey, at DGS gunsmithing in Casper Wyoming.

Excellent info...The  book velocities I would suspect are fairly close to the 7mmRem Mag??

I had a 65DL Schultz and Larsen rifle chambered in 7x61. It was a later model with the 1-10" rifling twist. [Early ones were 1-12 and would not stabilize bullets over 150 gr] It was wonderfully accurate and would come fairly close to 7mm Rem Mag velocities. The rifle had a rear lockup system, and was not happy with loads even a bit "warm" Brass life was a bit less than I liked because of this design, I suspect. The brass from Norma changed considerably over the years, becoming thinner but tougher in the later version, called "Super 7x61" The rifle itself was a thing of beauty, and worked very well. I eventually sold it to a guy who just had to have it, and proved that by the amount of money he was willing to pay. You don't see many of them anymore, but once in awhile, one shows up to tempt me again. Regards, Eagleye.

I used this weapon for several years with animals in northern Arizona, and Colorado, wiwth great sucess.  I lost my right eye to cancer in 1990, anad have not used it since.

I was hoping to get lined up with a couple boxes of ammo, and maybe put weapon on the market.

I built it in 1965.

Any information, or questions I can answer?

Yea Lyle and all you other folks in here, i did have a few questions mostly about ammo. My father just recently was given a Schultz and Larsen 7x61 for his birthday from his great uncle who was in the navy in WWII. My dad and I both hunt every year and just recently where we hunt, they changed the law and its now rifle country. My dad uses his old 6.5mm mouser from his father and i have been using the 7x61. The only problem is, is we only have a limited amount of ammo from my great uncle which was a box of 20 shells from Norma made in Sweden. I have been trying to look around on forums and books about alternatives in ammo because its just about impossible to find 7x61 ammo anywhere and if u do find it, its nearly $40 a box. I found on a few sites in which some people were saying its equivalent is a 7mm and you can use 7mm ammo. Then i hear other people saying you cant, which is really confusing and i dont want to try 7mm ammo until i know i can. I have the M60 7x61 S&H with a 12 inch twist. If theres any information you guys can give me it would be wonferful. Thanks.

Welcome to the board Twilex and Lyle...:thumbs:
Twilex, the 7x61 is a cartridge to its own and you cannot use 7mm Mag in it.If you are interested in loading it for yourself you can get all the ammunition you want..:thumbs:

Just signed up the other day.  You can get brass from Huntingtons (http://www.huntingtons.com), dies and bullets from Midway (http://www.midwayusa.com).

I just picked up a Schultz & Larsen M60 in 7x61 S&H, great shape for it's age!!  Just started reloading for it.

Good luck with it.

I just purchased 2 Shults @ Larsons in 7X61@308 Norma mag. Great rifles. Great calibers. The 7X61 is very accurate and great for larger game. You can get Loaded ammo for this caliber from Obsolete Military ammo. The Shultz @ Larson rifles are a work of art and worth having.

Was cleaning out the 20-year box and came across two boxes of Norma Super 7x61 ammo...never had the rifle but was interested in the caliber. Googled it and found this thread...So anyway if someone is still looking for a little of this ammo...
