Well after having loaded up a really good load in my 22-250 Rem. 700 VLS I decided I'd do my old man a favor and load his up.

I found some magic at a HOT, EXCESSIVE LOAD of 34.8 grains of Varget underneath a Hornady 60 gr. SP that oughtta work great for yotes, perhaps whitetails and varmints of all kinds.  I was getting 3 -shot groups at 0.926 inches with the best two going into 0.26 inches.  There were more accurate loads that went under 0.4 but I wanted something really hot since he might go back to his one-gun days and break it out for whitetails.  This is a beyond MAX loads which was loaded incrementally and carefully examining cases, primers and the usual precautions but found this load to be safe with velocities averaging 3460 fps.  Compare this to the 3100 fps my 700 vls likes and it's a pretty big difference.  Maybe I'll have to give it a try sometime but why mess with a good thing!

Here's just a typical group that I fired for sight - in at 100 yards from a very fouled barrel, still warm on a 88 degree day last week.

Looks good to go Brad.   The velocity seems fine when compared to my 22-250 spitting out a 55gr BT at 3,620 or a bit higher.   The accuracy also seems like my Ruger, puting two right together and one always a little out.  I'm sure you're dad will appreciate the load, especially when a nice racked whitetail is in the crosshairs.

I'm curious.  Do you have any idea how many rounds have been fired through it in it's life?  Mine's got just over 1,900 rounds through the bore, and I figure that's what's making the accuracy fall off a bit from when it was younger.   I'm gonna have to give Varget a try in mine, as the only powder I've ever used in it was H380.  (I did try H414 and W760 a long time ago and H380 beat the pants off em.)

How's it going Gunrunner!

Kind of reassuring to hear the velocities are right on par with what you've done in your 22-250.  I really have an attachment to this sporter weight 22-250.  Old man bought it years ago at a bargain price, some decent figure on one side and sorta plain on the other.  Topped with a 3-9X old school Tasco it has taken plenty of whitetails, turkeys, varmints and paper.  We ate awfully good with that rifle in the house.  Now, it's kinda taken a back seat to others but boy am I glad to find a hot load for it.  Might have to take it out more often!
