I'm confused I would like to load some 44-40 for my rifle. I have starline brass, accurate #5 , berry 200gr rnfp cowboy and rem lrp or cci lpp . One book tells me lr primer, the other says LPP.

I would think that it would depend on the pressure of your load. If you are loading to rifle pressure then use rifle primers.
However I would not load any 44/40 case to pressures high enough to need a rifle primer.

one is a wee lil bit taller than the other ...same diameter ,i use large pistol primers and while i have a strong pistol i dont load it too hot ( seems the hottest with the best thump is cram it full of black powder)
hornady's book's recipe calls for federal 150 thaz large pistol(tho i use cci ;) )

it can be dangerous and also cause "slam fires" or firing of a shell thru recoil ,it's not recommended and while some high intensity pistol rounds actually call for rifle primers, large rifle primers have a much stronger cup and are taller than large pistol pimers...more reading is encouraged
SAAMI Specifications for primer pockets are as follows:
Small Rifle/Small Pistol .118" to .122".
Large Rifle .128" to .132".
Large Pistol .118" to .122".

I don't load .44 WCF, but I do load its smaller brother, the .38 WCF., for an 1892 Winchester. I use nothing but large pistol primers. Unless you are going way over standard pressure, I would stay away from LRP in that case.
