Mostly I load the rcbs 82084 bullet cast from 20-1 ,sized .459 and lubed with Sagebrush Alox,a .030 fiber wad, ahead of 70 grs of goex Cartridge all stuffed into a winchester case.

Altho one of my rifles is really hot for the same bullet only loaded, with 65 grs of Grafs 2f in Remington Nickle cases, and torched off with cci magnum pistol primers.

answering this one's going to be depressing   :

before i tore my laredo 7mmrum apart, components used for 1K yd shooting were 160 gr. accubond's, retumbo, fed215's and remington cases.

before i sold my m700 .338kahn, components used for +1K yd shooting were 300 gr. smk's, retumbo or h50bmg, fed215's and fireformed wby cases.

until i get the laredo back up and running, my extended range varminting will revolver around a ruger m77vt .243 and a savage bvss .25-06 and top out around 700 yds     ...     if, i find the time to get out at all this summer.

ok, now i'm sufficiently depressed.

Never had the chance to shoot on a range that long, the 600 meters range in the Army was the longest one I ever have been able to use, and this was with issued ammo:confused:.

.308 load: Lapua brass - 42grs Varget - 175gr Match King seated to 2.810 - Fed 210 Primers.

Light recoil, only 11 mills of elevation to 1,000. Getting about 2630 fps out of my stock 700P.

I also weight sort my bullets and brass. Sort measured bullets by ogive measurement. Meplat trim my bullets. I also ultrasonic clean my brass, oh and I anneal them as well.

I think I enjoy reloading a little too much!

6.5x284 Norma, Sierra 142gr. matchking, IMR 4831, Federal l.r. match primers, in a Lapua case. As yet I haven't had the opportunity to shoot it at 1,000 yards, but it is holding 1/2 moa to 600yds when shooting in good conditions and I would expect it to do well at 1,000yds. My concerns lie with my own abilities and not with the cartridge or rifle-scope set-up.

Well, since it's not stated what caliber....I'm going to jump way out there.

LC52 brass, with the necks turned to .0220(gives just the right tension), flash hole deburred with a K&M deburring tool.  Only two choices for powder, but I prefer VV#20n29 over the AA#8700....let's go with 245.6grains(Holy Shit, he gonna blow something up!).  Primers are CCI35(availability is everything with these).  Projectile of the shootin' crew....750gr Hornady AMAX.

This combination will give 10-shot groups at 1K yards in the mid to high seven inch range.  Doesn't really matter unless the winds are gusting unpredictably due to the BC of 1.05 and a SD of .412

Have also shot this load out to 2.5 miles!

Scott (super load) B

This is an interesting question and brings back lots of memories because I've been shooting 1000 yard competitions more years than I want to remember.  Including the Wimbledon and Leech cup matches at Camp Perry(Neither of which I have won)and at several other places across the country.  Like most old timers, I began with a .30/06, using Western Super Match ammo (When I could afford it.) Frankfor Arsenal Match (When I could get it.) and handloads with 180 grain boattails, surplus 4895 powder and FA Match cases, which then was the best brass I could get and still ranks  among the best '06 cases ever made.  Though considered GI ammo, the primers were not crimped.  When I was on the Army Rifle Team we used M-70 Winchester Bull guns in .300 H&H caliber and our ammo was mostly Remington Match with 180 gr bullets.  In the later 1960's our .30/06 match ammo was loaded at the Lake City plant with 173 grain bullets at 2640 fps.  It was pretty good stuff and, like the Frankfort match ammo, the primers were not crimped.  I saved my fired cases and gave them to civilian handloaders who condered it a great prize.  By then however the .300 Win Mag was king of the 1000 yd ranges and over the years I had three different target rifles is this caliber (Still have a couple for old times sake: one a custom target job on M-70 action with 28" barrel and another custom job built on Shilen DGA action with Shilen barrel and Roy Dunlap style prone stock.)  By then Sierra and Hornady were offering good .30 caliber match bullets in a variety of weights.  I tried about everything but my "go-to" load for 1000 yd matches with the .300 Win Mag was 74 grs of H-4831 with 210 grn Burger VLD and CCI #250 primer.  According to my 1994 Camp Perry log the MV of this load was 2980 fps and it was wonderfully accurate in the Shilen rifle.  Along the way I was also shooting a variety of .308 rifles in competions, including the PALMA courses.  The  official 1992 PALMA load was custom loaded by Jenson's in Tucson with a special 155 grn Sierra bullet in a special run of Winchester brass. I forget the load but powder was 4895, as I recall.  It was good stuff.   But 1000 yard shooting was changed almost overnight by introduction of match grade 6.5 mm bullets and especially the .260 Remington round.  Like most other shooters I went with the flow and found the 6.5 accurate, with good wind resistance without the recoil and boom of the magnums.  A 140 or 142 grain Sierra MK in the .260 loaded with about 37 grs of IMR4895 was a pleasure to shoot, seemed to find the 1000 yd X-Ring by itself and, unlike the Mags, barrel life was good.  I also had a short affair with the 6.5 /284 but the 1000 yard picture changed again with Jim Carmichael's introduction of his 6.5 Leopard.  Which is a .300 WSM necked down to 6.5 (I use .270 WSM brass, which is easier to neck down.) and tops 3100fps with 142 grn Sierra MK and a case full of Hodgdon Retumbo powder.  I've used a couple of these with fine success in 1000 yd bench rest matches, and accurate barrel life for the first one was some 1100 rounds.  The one I'm shooting now has a Kreiger 4-groove barrel and after nearly 600 rounds accuracy is a good as when new, if not better.   The key to good barrel life with a 1000 yd rifle, btw, is don't burn it out testing loads at 100 or 200 yards ("Point Blank range as we 1000 yarders  like to say) and save it for long range tournaments where it counts.  Didn't mean for this to get so long,  and this isn't the end of my story because I've been shooting a 6mm wildcat at 600 yds and thinking about another 6mm for 1000 yds.   Any questions let me know and if enough interest I can post some pictures of the old 1000 yard factory ammo boxes and even my 1000 yd rifles.

Shoot well, often and safely

Offhand, what twist are you using for the 143 gr Sierras and what SF are you expecting?

Many thanks, Overbore

ps: I am into the 210 BErgers in a 300wsm, tight neck (0.003 total clearance) configuration with 61gr+ of V V powder.  Playing cya but max accuracy is at 2,950 fps in a Kreiger.  I am shooting with a vented barrel block===

I had a .280 Rem AI that I absolutely loved and which was unfortunantley stolen.

I like this cartridge a lot since I have an aversion to belted casings.

While I never actually loaded rounds for 1000 yards shooting I would start with a hefty charge of IMR 4350 or possibly ever some Hogdon 4831 and Sierra #1930 168 gr .284 dia Matchking Bullets.

A Federal 210M Large Rifle Match Primer to ignite the powder and Remington cases to hold it all together.  The high sectional density of this bullet should make for a decent enough long range performer.

Overbore, good question and glad you asked about twist on my 6.5mm 1-K rifles because I tend to be somewhat out of the box when it comes to twist, especially with the 6.5s.  The two rifles I have in 6.5 Leopard chambering have 1/9" twist, which is slower than what most 6.5 shooters go with.   The slower twist has been quite a revelation accuracywise and I'm planning to go to a 9-1/2" for my next rifle.

Happy 4th to all

Offhand, you are on the right path from current BR trends.  Well done.  May I suggest that from canted lands you may gain velocity with lower pressures?

Thx for your response.

Cordially, Overbore

After some range time, I found out that my previous load was no longer super sonic at 1k.

So my new load is same components as above but only difference is now 44.5 grs of Varget.

I get a average fps of 2712 out of my stock 26. @ 86 degrees.

The new Mike Rock barrel is on the way, and I will be curious to see how much faster that barrel will be.
