How much variation do you usually see in your COAL when you reload. I was reloading some .223 last night using some Hornady V-Max bullets and some 69gr Matchkings and I feel like I was getting a lot of variation. I was loading to 2.26" OAL and would get numbers anywhere from 2.257 to 2.262. I think it is just the bullets themselves that are not all perfectly equal in height. How much variation do you see as acceptable for accurate loads?
the nose on hollow points and poly tipped bullets can easily deform and in doing so drive you crazy if you're trying to get every col to match perfectly.
for consistency, you'll have better luck measuring col off the ogive of these bullets rather then the tips using a comparator like this with your calipers :
i have a two piece like this one. some calibers are overlapped, but with both (offered at midway) pretty much everything is covered. something to consider.
