I put together a rifle that was based on my thoughts of mid to longer range coyote shooting. 150yd shortest to about 600yd the longest. As in the subject line, it's chambered in 244AI and I put on a heavy (1.137" diameter) 28" long Douglas barrel. I wanted to use a light bullet of 65gr to 75gr so I went with a 1 in 14 twist so I could get a little extra speed, still not sure if that was the correct way to go. As I fire formed the brass with Remington 100gr factory ammo I noticed the bullets are not stablized, key holes at 50 yard. Well, I sorta figured that might happen with the heavier bullets and the slower velocity for this barrel. I went through my manuals and searched the internet and found that IMR4350 was a popular powder for the parent round so I worked up some handloads using that powder and 65gr V-Max bullets. I have not had the chance to test the loads yet but I wondered what you folks (that shoot/use the 244AI) think of this combination. Sound okay to you?

Well, I guess it's going to be a bit longer before I can test the loads. Have a pinched nerve in my neck and the Doc says NO SHOOTING. I have to agree with him about the recoil and the rearward tilt of my head at the shooting bench causing problems. This injury is over ten years old and of course, it had to show it's head after I retired! However, it doesn't bother me at the loading bench so I may spend some time there while wearing this darn neck traction unit.

In my original post, what I was really wondering was about the IMR4350 powder. Though the powder has been around for years and there may be some "newer" powders out there that I could use, I have over five pounds of it and figured I should try it. Any suggestions on other powders to try? As I stated before, I'll be at the loading bench and not the shooting bench for a couple of weeks at least.

Thanks for the info! I have some IMR4320, but no RE-19. In regards to the slow twist for rifling, it has been haunting my thoughts since it was delivered. Perhaps if I can get enough velocity it will pan out...time will tell. Thanks again.

The most accurate load from my standard 244 is Win 760 and the 87 gr Hornady BTHP. I tried Rel 19 and 4350 and the Win 760 beat both for accuracy, grouping around 1/2 or less consistently at 100 yards. My 244 has a Shilen sporter with 1&12 twist. Of the three powder listed Rel 19 gave the worst accuracy, just over 1 inch with the bullets i tried.

I'm working on a more portable neck brace...I wanna go shooting. Here's a pic of the rifle. I have to try these loads I have worked up and see what's going on first before I can move on I guess. Since this is such a slow twist, I'm thinking that it may like anything or nothing. Thanks for all your help.

The rifle does not have any shine to it, that's just the RIG grease...very humid here and rust starts VERY quick.

http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek042.html  perhaps I'm not not alone in the slow twist idea. And I have more Varget powder than I do IMR4350! But those loads seem to be a bit on the hot side for what I would want to go...but a good article and such just the same.

Not sure what you mean by "poor profile".

Naw...not bothered by his comments at all. In fact, I should be the one saying sorry to the members here. I searched and came up with very little info as to what I was looking for and then I noticed a posting about the 6mm Ackley loads that is going on at the same time as this one. I have no idea how I missed it. Not trying to hijack another member's post/thread, but I should have jumped in on that one instead of starting this one.

Not hijacking at all Burt..Every new topic just adds to the base of knowledge for the board. There are tons of 30-06, 270, 7mm Rem Mag,223 and 308 threads, but very little for my little coyote slaying 6mm and its big brother the 6mm AI...
Let me know how she shoots.I tinkered with many powders including 4350 but IMR4320 just shined from the get go,fast and plenty accurate. My rifle is so heavy I can`t pack it around like I do my 223 for yotes..But I can set up on my pack with it prone and reach out and touch one. I put a 6x18 Redfield on it I had on my 25-06 when I replaced the 25-06`s scope with a new Leupold.
The 6x18 and the 6mm have truly impressed me .A little round with a whole lot of ummph when she hits..
I agree with Bea on RL 19..There are more appropriate powders for the small bore 6mm.Unlike what the goober that was posting here knocking your rifle said, Bea has been handloading longer than I`ve been alive and has probably forgotten more about rifles and handloading that goober with the big mouth will ever know.:wink:I`d trust his guidance on any powder choice, most of all because he likely owns that chambering he comments on..He is the one feller that owns more rifles than me:wink: and thats enough on his part to arm the Cuban Army..lol
Good luck on it and keep us posted..Good lookin rifle ya have.

bea mentioned ww760 ... i use it's twin alot ! h414 ( albiet not in ur caliber-nice lookin rig btw ! ) in my 243's i found my best groups with it ( well the 22-250 as well but ...)varget is another great powder but IMO it does better with the lighter bullets ,h414 was designed to be a ball equivalent of 4350 and it works great ( i think it's a wee bit dirtier than varget tho )one of the selling facts for me was the ease and consistency of it's metering and while i still check religiously as long as my powder hopper is 1/4 or more full the charge weight never seems to vary ( big plus for me ! ) hope ur neck gets better soon !! cuz i admit i'm curious how ur project goes ( debating on a 6 or a 6.5 for my next project )

edit for t.g ... umm just how big is the cuban army ?

lol..well I betcha Bea could arm a few platoons with some of the deadliest firepower they ever seen...
I use 4350 in my boy`s 243 Win..great powder with the 100 grain bullet in it..
I load the 85 grain Sierra Game Kings in my 6mm..I have thought about going lighter but the 85 grain does excellent and the 80 grain Blitz Varminter bullet I think Sierra calls it excels for what I consider close range yotes..

I still have not got out to shoot yet...crap. I searched through my powders and I don't have any IMR4320. I have had very good luck with it in my 7.62x54R loads and must have used it all up. (I wish I would let me know when I do things like that...hahaha).

Yes Timberghozt, I know what you mean about lugging heavy rifles around, not too much fun these days. To be honest, when hunting, fishing or handloading becomes a chore due to all the 'extra' gadgets and time tossed in, I'll flush the whole idea. It's suppose to be fun and if I get too caught up in making things better it just ruins the whole idea. Don't get me wrong though, if it's over an inch group at 100 yards then I'm not done. But I'm not a Benchrest Match shooter and they don't all have to go through the same whole at 100 yards...but it would be nice!

Ahhh, and firearms collections. Just under a year ago I had 158 firearms in this very small house all stashed into one room...which was my bedroom. With all the long guns around the walls, ammo crates and boxes in closets, parts under my bed and two drawers in my dresser full of handguns...there was very little room for clothes. I started to think that I had some kind of sickness or something. Well, the IRS helped me with the 'problem'. First year I ever owed money and it was a BUNCH money that I owed. So thanks to the IRS and some time spent at four tables at a gunshow, I have room for clothes and things. Just no money to buy the clothes now.

I had a chance to try out my handloads using the IMR4350 with the 65gr bullets. My chronograph would not work for some reason and just about became a target, so no speed data darn-it. I got a .277 hole in the target at 100 yards. That was with 50.0 grain of IMR4350...not too bad! By the Sierra manual with a 60gr bullet, they give a velocity of 3800fps using a 26 inch barrel, I have a 28" barrel so I should be in the 3800fps ball park figure even with the added .05gr of weight. I want to try the Varget next...this may prove to be a bit of fun!

Burt,
Nice looking rifle. Looks like it is going to shoot very well too! I am going to hijack your 50 gr 4350 load for my old beat up  6mm Ack  Improved ( I call it the junk yard dog) built it a long time ago out of a Model 700 that was a truck gun for a West Texas cowboy and a shot out 6mm bench rifle barrel.Don't have a clue what the twist is but it shoots 70 Hornady Hp's about .160 for 5 @ 100 yards.
Thanks for the info and good luck with your neck problems
George

Thanks jeepmann1, the rifle turned out to be a looker without the shine. It is a heavy sucker but, that was to be expected with that large of a barrel. I'm sure it's a shooter as long as I stay with the lighter bullets and keep the speed up. I measured the bullet group from outside to outside, the only way I have done it for years so I best stick with it. I had planned on trying the Varget powder but I may stick with the IMR4350 for now since it shows potential. Oh, the neck seems to be an issue that is going to be with me for a long time...if not forever. It could always be worse so I will deal with it.
