Recently started loading for a mini 30 and the primers are backing out. Initially seated below flush after firing they are protruding about .003. Anyone else experience this. Have shot light, medium and heavy loads with AA2460 and RL#7. Same situation with all of them. I had the same problem with a garand about 40 years ago and didn't worry about it, but we are trying to use this rifle for three competition and don't want a primer in the action should a pocket get a little loose. Any ideas?

Swamp, What caliber bullet are you loading? Wonder what the pressures are doing. RD

We're loading .308 bullets. Pressures range from mild to just slightly below max. We've been told that the mini-30 has a .308 bore, or close to it.

That's what I intend to load for it too when I get some brass. Just wondering if you were at .311 and driving her too hard. Someone just told me a couple of days ago that .308 was the way to go. ( Maybe it was you. My mind is getting that way some days.) I really have no suggestions on this one. If your pressures are right I'd try a different brand of primers. Someone in another thread suggested loctite. RD

How is the 'feel' when crushing the primer into the pocket?  Easy, medium, medium heavy.

Is the bolt face flush?  Any build-up of brass on it?

Is this brass new? I get primers backing out a little with new IMI and Lapua brass. When I FL size them I make sure I do not bump the shoulders back to far and the problem goes away.

The Ruger Mini-30 may or may not have a .308 bore. It depends on when it was made. The older/original barrels were .308 with a tapered throat to allow for both .308 and .311. The newer ones (after 1994 I believe) have a true .311 bore.

After initial firing cases were neck sized only and fired again. problem solved. Haven't measured the cases yet, but a large chamber appears to have been the problem. Stands to reason that with all the different surplus ammo thats available that Ruger would try to produce a rifle that would shoot most anything.

My Mini-30 doesn't like surplus (?) Wolf steel cased ammo at all.  Lotsa misfires. I've been told that the firing pin doesn't strike the primer hard enough to ignite their "harder" primers.

I use only handloads now.  Hornady 123 gr. soft points, Win. Brass & CCI primers. I've never experienced primer back-out.

Chamber dimensions from one rifle to the next frequently vary, sometimes considerably. My problem was caused by an oversize chamber. In order to make a rifle that will function and fire the majority of surplus and/or imported ammo on the market today, I'm certain this was a necessary feature. So far we're pleased with this rifle, just a minor glitch that we needed to figure out the cause of, in order to correct.
