Hello, well depending on how tarnished they are (some of it still may not come out) If I get a batch of dirty brass I run it for about 4 hours and see how they are. It mostly is trial and error.  After that I have run cases for about 12 hours to get them looking brand new.

Corn cob is good for polishing but for heavy duty cleaning I use walnut media. With either I use Flitz, either the tumbler additive or the regular liquid polish. In a pinch if your on a tight budget I use long grain white rice, you can pick up a big bag of the cheap stuff it does just as good as the walnut media in my opinion.

Also, scrounge the garbage can next to the laundry dryer and tear up an old used sheet into a few strips this will attract the dirt and keep your media / rice lasting longer.

Do not use Brasso, it has ammonia in it and that will harm brass in the long run.

Howdy, I usually put in one "circle" of the stuff. Meaning that I squeeze out one full circle of liquid and let it run for about 5 minutes without any brass so it gets mixed up good and dries out a little.

If your cleaning small mouthed cases (usually anything .243 and under) the wet media can get stuck in there and its a pain to get it out. so let it run so some of the liquid will evaporate.

If your cleaning with the spent primers removed watch out for media stuck in the flash holes also. Take a finish nail and pop em through or run them through your sizing die and it will pop out also.

Hope it helps.

Jeff

Some times when its really dirty I have been known to let it run 3 - 4 days with no ill effects,

I like the walnut media best ,just my own preference 20lbs bag at the pet store is about 9 bucks

I've found that with new media 1 - 1 1/2 hours depending on how dirty the brass is.

If it takes more than 4 hours, I replace the media.

Don't forget to add a used Bounce dryer sheet to help keep the media clean and the dust down.

I run mine for about 2 to 3 hours, using corn cob media. If you use a Bounce sheet, make sure it's used and cut it with scissors into 3 or 4 strips. I made the mistake of using new sheets a couple of times and it imparts not only a sickly-sweet scent but also an oily type resin to the case.

I spin mine in a Dewalt cordless with a Lee shellholder and a small piece of cotton t-shirt to get the dust off. Then, being anal, I blow them out again with compressed air to get out any lint particles from the t-shirt that are inside the case.

As you can see, tumble time is largely irrelivant as such, it's a results orientied type thing.

An ounce or two of any liquid metal or paint polish, EXCEPT those containing ammonia such as "Brasso", and inexpensive Nu-Finish auto polish is good. (But NOT a liquid auto "wax") And don't keep adding it too often, dried polish is what makes most of the "media dust" many people get concerned about and that dust is most of what the loose weave used drier sheets pick up.

When things get noticalbly slower, add/mix a couple ounces of mineral spirits, aka "oderless mineral spirits". It will both rejuvinate the dried polish and also helps cut the surface crud off the cases so the polish can work faster.

If you have some badly tarnished cases, black, it's virtually impossible to tumble it off. Do an over night soak in a 50:50 mix of white vinegar (low stink type) and water, the mild acid is harmless to brass but will convert the dark tarnish, an oxidation much like rust actually, to a pinkish color. Flush it, dry it and tumble it normally and you won't be able to tell it from any others.
