It has been a lot of years since I used a sphercial powder but, was in the old Sportsmans Whse. in Bend, Ore. last week. Low or out of most powder's but there looking at me is an 8# keg of H414. I've heard lot's of good reports about the stuff so being a bit low on powder bought it, $148!
As I recall those powder's have a special coating on them and work best with mag primer's. Well I didn't have any but gave it a go in my 243 anyway. Using 70gr SMK's the group's weren't all that impressive. So I was digging thru my cabnet last night and found a boxs of Fed 215's, 15 left in the box. Decided to see if they really would make a differenct so picked out two mid range load's. 46.5 and 47.0 grs and loaded six each with half Herter 120 and half Fed 215 primer's.
Went to the range, kinda look's like a gravel pit but I call it a range, today and shot them on side x side target's. There is definatelly a difference. 46.5grs with Herter 120 primer gave me .765" group. Same load with Fed 215 primer gave me a .447" group. With the 47.0gr load, the Herter primer gave me .835" group and the Fed mag primer gave me .582" group.
Now the first round of these with these loads and standard primer's were not near as good as this round. I think maybe the standard primer's really don't ignite spherical powder well enough.
So, here's a question. Anyone in Ore or Wash have any mag primer's they would trade for standard? I have plenty of CCI 200's, Win 81/2's and Herter 120's. BTW, those who don't remember Herter's, they are my favorite primer's.

I use 414 in the 243 and the 3006. Don't even own a magnum rifle primer and both rifles will group under moa if I do my part.
Get some fresh large rifle primers and go to work on load developement.

I keep it simple and use Winchester WLR primers with W-760. (Same powder as H-414, just from a different lot.) However, I believe Winchester's standard primers may be a somewhat hotter than other brands, Winchester, in their little loading handbooks, state that they used their standard (WLR) primers for all load data work up.
I did do a load test in my .257 Robt. with Winchester standard and magnum primers. The standards outshot the magnums by a noticable margin. (.75" with the standard primers and 1.25" with the magnums.) Powders were W-760 and WMR.
So far, I have not seen the need for magnum primers with the ball type primers even with their slow burners like W-785 and WMR. I never did like 785 but have had excellent results with WMR. Too bad "Big W" in their infinite wisdom decided to remove it from the market.
