Got back last night from opening weekend.  Bucks 1 / Gunrunner 0.

On Friday around noon I made it to the campsite and got things set up.  My friend Jeff showed up and then a hard rainstorm came through.  Good thing we already had the tents set up.  The rain only lasted about half an hour, but we were hoping it would get the deer moving.

In the early evening Jeff drove me to where he'd seen bucks during archery season a few weeks ago.  On the way there a 3x3 ran across the road and stopped long enough for us to get a real good look.  Across the road up at the edge of tall timber there were two more bucks that looked equal in size.

After checking our spot where we were going to sit in the morning we drove back along that timberline.  I spotted another buck so we stopped the truck to check him out.   He was standing about 70 yards up the hill.  I managed to get a picture of him, which is real fuzzy because of the low light and the camera using a 2 second exposure.

This buck also had a nice large body but what set him apart from the others we'd seen was his rack.  It had some mass to it, as compared to the skinny antlers the three pointers had.  Couldn't tell at all how many points.   Definitely the biggest Blacktail I've ever seen.   Sorry the picture is so crappy.

We changed our mind about where to sit opening morning.  This was the spot.  NOT.

Needless to say, that was the only time I saw any bucks during my three days of sitting, driving, and hiking.  We only saw three does too.  There were a lot of fresh tracks, some real large.  Lots of bear tracks too, but never saw one.  With a full moon and clear skys the odds weren't very good.  Jeff went home Sunday afternoon and I stayed and kept trying to find even a forked horn.  The only deer I brought home was this old skull I found.

I'll be back out there soon, but not till the weather and moon are more cooperative.  Till then those four bucks will be on my mind.  Probably giving me nightmares.

I'll keep at it guys.  I know there's a buck or two out there with my name on it.  The public lands I hunt can be pretty tough.  All the large bucks seem to have opening day ingrained into their memory, and when it comes they up and disappear.

I forgot to mention I did get some blood on the 7 Mag.  At one time we had a small pack of 'yotes coming right at us.  They saw us and scattered, with one running right by us.  Jeff shot and hit it in the hindquarters, then the shoulder.  It dropped near me and was thrashing about so I put one in it's neck to end it.  Not much of a first blood really.  Oh well.

Yeah I hate hunting public land to darn many hunters and so few deer!!!! This year is different I got super lucky and have a 6,000 acre commercial farm to hunt plus the hunts with Challenge The Outdoors and Adaptive Sportsmen. Also the Turtle Lake Lions Club has  put on a disabled hunt which Im all signed up for:thumbs:of course all this is in Wisconsin.
