Very, very nice. Love the pics. Looking forward to the full report and added pics.
Was just up at 50's today shooting a bit and addressing our own impending hog hunt. Reading your post really gets the juices flowing. Got e-mails sent off requesting info so hopefully something can be finalized soon. Maybe for May.?.?.?.?
Gonna try a handgun on my hog hunt. Broke the .50AE in on a light starting load using a 420 gr. cast bullet. No chrony, just seeing if they'd feed reliably. Things look promising; at least to start with. The prospect of the 420's at AE velocities is kinda exciting. Would be a combo that'd turn this semi-auto into a pretty serious hammer, that is if I can get a top end load to shoot well and feed properly. We shall see.
Anyway, congrats on the success. Rifle and shooter performed well. Never doubted you'd return with a great story and pics. Chat with ya later.

Thanks fellas, and yup Charley, you`re right..I`m taking the kid with me next trip.Him and his 243 will be doing the shooting this time.He has never hunted hogs before, only deer.I got money on him though that he can handle em.He oughta clean out 1 or 2 of that 8 million...
Bill, you might search for game preserves near you.I know they are all over the place, high fence land with Russian boar and feral hog hunts.Just a thought, but I guarantee you will have fun..

I left out Friday about noon after stopping at my local grocery store and bank.It is about a two hour drive for me to John`s ranch depending on how traffic moves on 190 as you near Fort Hood Texas, after that, its smooth sailing.
I arrived at the ranch about 2:30 p.m. and met up with the ranch foreman Billy. We headed up to the cabin situated on a hill you can see for 20 miles from.I unloaded my clothing ruck,boots,45-70 and spare rifle. The cabin is absolutely beautiful.Private bedrooms, washers and dryers, satellite TV,huge bathrooms with super hot showers, magnificent kitchen and living room filled with mounts taken on the Walking Horse Ranch.
This is the largest boar ever taken by John himself with a 30-378.My head is as big but this hog outweighed my hog by a bit.Beautiful mount here

I quickly changed out of everyday clothes and slid on some Mossy Oak stuff.Grabbed my small ruck with dig cam,CaseXX skinners, gatorade, spare bullets, flashlight and an extra can of Copenhagen.
Billy already had my four wheeler warmed up and running for me.So with one last check, had my pistol on my hip, rifle, bullets and snuff(what else do ya need? ).I took a seat on my four wheeler and off we went. After a 15 minute or so ride Billy put me in a blind where some huge hog tracks have been seen pretty regularly crossing the road.
I got myself situated and loaded my 45-70 then quickly found out my dig cam batteries were dead.Lucky as heck I was using Scout243`s ruck and had put extra AA`s and D cells in the side pocket.About 5:30 pm two bucks came in to a feeder about 150 yards out.I glassed them just passing time for a bit then happened to see this turkey walking down the path by my blind and decided to take a pic of him.

A few does hit the protein feeder behind me keeping me looking left and right at both feeders. Then in comes a real rack. The two bucks feeding start getting antsy as a bruiser comes in.I could see he had a nice rack and eased my rifle up to glass him.I seen what I think is the largest whitetail buck that I have ever seen in the wild at that moment.A 180 class Boone and Crockett buck that is absolutely phenomenal wide and tall with bases that scream ,"I`M A HORSE"..I sat mesmerized as I watched this buck that has been seldom seen feed and dominate every deer coming in trying to feed.My dig cam sucks at long range photos so I just glassed him glancing off and on at the feeder to my right.
He got spooked by something and turned coming straight across in front of me at about 60 yards. He stopped once and looked back over his shoulder just before he slid off into the live oaks.I can honestly say, that was a once in a lifetime treat to see an animal of this caliber.
The Walking Horse Ranch is primarily and very excellently managed as a trophy whitetail and cattle operation. The hogs are abundant but they are not a welcome guest. The hogs will regularly hit the deer feeders and are quite a nuisance. When the hogs come in,the deer get gone quick.
I didn`t see a hog that evening but watched a beautiful sunset

as I continued watching deer come and go through the live oaks, cedar and prickly pear cactus.

I headed back to the cabin after dark and met Billy.
John and Scotty showed up shortly after with some awesome ribeye steaks John put on the pit.e sat down to a number one feast and shot the breeze, ate some fine steak and had a blast.
The next morning we decided to hunt that blind again.I took this awesome pic of a classic panoramic Texas sunrise at daylight. If the feel of a fine rifle in your hands and a sunrise like this doesn`t stir your soul, somethins wrong.

John and Scotty took a blind on down from me a bit and left me a radio. If the guy I was looking for showed up at there blind,I was gonna stalk in on him for a shot. After a beautiful morning of watching whitetails,a trophy boar still remained elusive.
Pigs are common and often seen.Trophy sized boars are smarter and a bit tougher to find. They don`t get that big by being dumb.We hunted 4 or so hours and called the blinds quit. They picked me up in a John Deere Gator and off we went looking for a spot and stalk opportunity. We drove a lot, walked a bit and shot the breeze, had a good time.We stopped and took a look inside some caves on the ranch.Very cool I might add.Belly`s were starting to growl so we headed back to the cabin.Scotty and I went fishing down on the Colorado River for a bit while John headed off to the main house.John`s wife had driven up to the ranch and made us lunch..Fantastic grub I have to say.You will not go hungry at this place fellas..
We decided to take an early blind.I have hunted this ranch once before and knew where the tripod stand was located at the back of the ranch. It is seldom used but I like it.I took a four wheeler and left about 3 pm headed for it.I parked the four wheeler 400 or so yards from the stand and headed for it.Got there quickly and up I went.
I seen a few does in the distance and watched for a while. The feeder went off about 5:30 and the deer started coming in quickly.I had 3 deer feeding as I watched emhaving a ball. All of a sudden the lead doe looks up and jumps straight up,turns and hauls ass.The other two look up an bolt also.I said wtf
I waited afew minutes and nothing.I looked back off in the direction of the deer. They stopped out about 250 yards and were looking back .I turned my head and seen what I thought was the tail end of a hog move into the cedars. He was gone.
I am now wired.I slid the 45-70 onto my left forearm and lowered my head to get the glass in my eyes as I scanned.Shortly I make out a shape coming back through the prickly pears.Again he turns and heads back.I could see his back but couldn`t tell how big this animal was.A few minutes pass and this time he comes back in.I watched with crosshairs ready as he came into full view.He was as long as the poles on the bottom of the feeder.I slid my finger on the trigger, then I hesitated.I couldn`t really tell.He turned around and looked straight at me.Then I saw his head.Teeth hung out the side of that big mug.No more hesitation.I pulled the hammer back on the big .45.He turned quarter toward me.The crosshair found the shoulder and I felt the scope hit me between the eyes.I was right back on and he was on his side...It had happened so fast I was startled that he was down..I couldn`t make out how big he was.I set the rifle down and slid my SIG out of the holster.Checked to make sure I had a 165 Corbon in it.
I felt it wise to wait a minute before I got down to check him.An animal with teeth like that and wounded is not something to mess with.I called John on the radio and told him I thought I had a pretty nice hog down.He told me hang tight and him and Scotty were on the way.
I walked down to him and my eyes about exploded when I realized just how big this animal was and what I had just done..I took a few pics.

John and Scotty showed up..Lots of high fives, expletives, and back slapping were going on...

We struggled to load him and finally got him on the back of the Gator..Then we were off..
Saturday night was filled with celebratory beers a fine supper and a well needed sleep..
We arose early Sunday morning and went out to the covered cooler and caped him out!!!!

The rest is history fellas, but I had a hell of a time!!!!
I got home yesterday after noon and had to do some talking to get him in the cold.
My wife met me at the door and wanted to see this animal. She has seen me kill many animals but I think she was as happy as I was and this is the first time she ever asked me,"Where are we gonna put him on the wall???"
Thats good stuff there!!!! I know now why we get along so great!!
I`ve hunted feral hogs since I was 14 years old and it took me twenty years but I finally got my trophy one!!!!!
