Great story Gene...... After hunting all day I bet the 'super hot shower' felt great. I get the feeling you'll have many more stories to tell about hunts at the Walking Horse in the future.
Love the pics too. Congrats again, and keep baggin 'em.

Good looking Pig, Gene, i bet the tender loin will even be tough. He will make a great mount and you will be able to hang you hat on the cutters. The 45-70 doesn't mess around. You need to take that scope off the old 45-70 and replace with a good set of reciever sights and make that lever gun more carry savey. You won't even notice the difference when hunting those big porker's when it comes to sighing., except how much easier it is to pack around.

Many thanks fellas...yup I am anxious as heck to have him back.I am definately proud of him and have received many compliments on him.
Korey,me too bud.I can`t wait to post the finished mount pics!!!
GR,yup..A hot shower in hunting camp is awesome. You guys would have to see this cabin. It is awesome, very nice place.GR,I hope to send many more pics and stories from The Walking Horse. It won`t be too long before I take Scout down and see if he can put a few hogs down with his 243!!! He has never hunted hogs.I didn`t think he was ready yet for them but he`s getting a little older and better with that Ruger of his.
I was afraid he would freak out when he shot one and they started that squealing ruckus stuff.Much different than shooting whitetails.
Bea yup...I have been looking at that Ghost ring sight for it.Have you ever seen these? What do ya think about em?
Hunter,I wish I could tag that buck but he is spoken for already.I wouldn`t wager on him being tagged though. He has only been seen three times before...he is very wary and I doubt he`ll be an easy kill for anyone..
Glad you fellas enjoyed the pics and story!!! Hopefully Scout will be writing one himself of his first hog hunt soon.

I had the ghost ring on my 45-70 and didn't really like it, so i replaced it with the William Fool Proof.

Hey bea..I`ll do a search and see if I can find anything on that Williams sight.I also thought about a Vernier style sight but target acquisition wouldn`t be nearly as fast I`m sure..

Great going TG!!
Solid hog and well worth hanging. What did ya use for bullets in that ole war horse? Some of those 500grns of tungsten? It looks like this is going to be a very nice mount. and the cutters on that lil piggie are perfect. You did quite well on that one buddy.
Take care Be safe Poacher.

I wonder what a flat nosed water quenched 405 grn solid would do at close to the same velocities would do? Since I have never hunted hog and don't know what your up against really I dont know, but I DO know the dang thing hits like a freight train.
If ya dont think the flat nose will do it the round nose 405s water quenched might do you better on penetretion with the same knock down power (which is what the mold I'm sendin ya throws if I can ever get to the post office, lol )
anyway, I like those pics so much I look at em every day, I prolly shouldnt since they make me jealous

Well, it only took me about seven months to finally get my account set up and reply to this thread.
The hunt with Gene was a great one and although we embellish a little (aka bullsh***ing) it really was a memorable weekend.
I had the pleasure of meeting Gene earlier in the season when we came out for a cull hunt that I had donated to CCA and his employer had won at a silent auction. Gene's the type of guy that you pretty quickly realize is what I call good people. A proud veteran, family man and a solid and knowledgeable marksman, hunter and steward of the outdoors. But enough of the warm shower....
Gene expressed interest in coming back out to Walking Horse for a trophy boar hunt so we brought him on back out. We started out hunting a 20' tower blind that is well known for producing some of biggest bucks on the ranch but also had a couple of large boars hanging out there that winter that would make great mounts. But being as I can't seem to convince the animals to always do what I want them to, Gene didn't see a boar in two straight outings to that spot.
With half the weekend gone by I was getting a little nervous that we had not seen a good boar. In fact, we weren't seeing any hogs at all and I was starting to think the weather and moon might have put them nocternal. Earlier in the season I had been spot and stalk hunting on the south end of the ranch and just about 15 minutes to dark found myself 10 yards away from the bruiser boar that Gene took. We had a five minute staring contest (I was staring down the sites of Kimber 1911) before he decided to move along. The open air tripod that Gene mentioned was only about 50 yards from my encounter with the master Porkster and I figured he was on his way in the direction when we crossed path on foot. Well, I knew he was in that area and I was running out options.
So Saturday evening we moved Gene back to the South and Scot and I took a position about 3/4 mile away at another good location. I figured with the radios that we if we had a trophy come in to the tank and Gene hadn't seen anything we might be able to contact him on the radio and have him move to us and possibly get a boar on foot. As luck would have it, that scenario didn't have to pan out as Gene was in the right place at the right time. Damn I'm good ;-)
For anyone interested please feel free to check out our website at http://www.walkinghorseranch.net or email me at whrtexas@yahoo.com
I highly recommend the "Fill Your Freezer" hunt. Unlimited non trophy hogs, 2 does, 1 spike/cull buck, fishing, top notch accomodations and all meals (and we do not slide on the grub). My guides know the ranch like the back of their hairy hands and we will show a very, very good time. Hunts are 2-3 days depending on what the party wants to do and availability. This package hunt runs $800 but if you contact me from seeing this on Gene's site I'll knock it down to $700. For a group of 3-5 we'll go down to $650. Additionally, you can add on a trophy Russian boar, turkey, trophy whitetail or a super cull whitetail for discounted rates. Or, just contact me and we can work out a packaged deal to suite your needs.
Great website Gene and look forwarding to becoming a regular.
JU
