I'm am applying for the Oct 14th - 18th either sex elk hunt  in Colorado this year. Does anyone else on the forum Elk hunt ?  I love the high country of Colorado and where i hunt out of Leadville,  the elevation is between 11,000 and 12,000 ft. It is very hard hunting and just about gets the best of me,  since i have gotten older. I dread the day that i won't be able to hunt the high country and watch the sun rise on the snow capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains. Every hunter owes himself at least one trip to the High Country after the Bull Elk , believe me life just doesn't get any better.

Bea, I have never been fortunate enough to do it.I am supposed to have a trophy mule deer hunt being set up this year along with a whitetail hunt in Mississippi this year.
I have never hunted mule deer.My goal is a trophy Mule deer. After I reach that goal....

My next goal is a bull elk.I have always wanted to do it,just never knew anyone who lived in elk country that would be willing to take a novice elk hunter out and show me how its done.So after the mule deer,I guess Ill find me a good outfitter that`ll put me on an elk..

Hey Timber i hunt public land and you will do a lot of hunting and walking and you will see very few elk. If you get a shot at a bull and mess it up , you more than likely won't get another. You are more than welcome to go with me , can't  promise you that we will even see a elk but can promise that you will see some beautiful country. The elk are there, but so much country for them to hide in. The country we hunt isn't one of those private ranch canned hunts. If you kill you will earn it, believe me.

When I was working, I figured it was just something to do , when I couldn't elk hunt.

I have been addicted for 40+ years.

You don't have to hunt them at 10K+ altitude. I find most of mind at 7500-9000 ft. I have shot an elk, sometimes 2 or three, every year for at least 15 years, none were over 9,000 ft.

The earlier seasons in CO, most of the time, the bulls come down to finds the cows during rut, and don't go back up high unless pushed.

I like all the hunters who think they have to go high, as it keeps the elk down lower

SS the town of Leadville is 10,500 ft and there is no place to go but up to hunt them. My army buddy lives in Leadville and that is why i picked Leadville.

Never done it myself but this year I'm going to put in for a tag.   It's a draw, and I probably won't get the tag, but I'll get points for future draws.   I might go for a cow tag as I see there's a lot less competition for those.  Everyone wants the bull tags, and I can understand why, but I'd just like to get a freezer full of meat.

In Colorado on the second and third hunt you can buy a Bull or Cow tag across the counter. I believe the Bull is 499.00 and the Cow 250.00 for NR hunters.

Hey bea..I appreciate the offer brother.Unfortunately,if I swing both the mule deer hunt and the Mississippi whitetail hunt, that is about gonna tap out what I can spend on hunting, taxidermy and trips for this year.:eek2::eek2::eek2:

If the offer still stands and you make the trip in 2007 I will take you up on it.My old 300 Win Mag has taken many deer and hogs,it would be delighted to take an elk..:thumbs:Hunting public land would be fine bro.You know how I feel about canned hunts and that crap.I would rather take a little bitty bull that I know I earned than a big 6x6 that didn`t have a chanceI shot in a fenced compound anyday.

Around his area elk hunting is the thing to do.  It can get pretty crazy, you are likely to get into some kind of "fight" if you jump a heard that someone else is hunting.  So my elk hunting has been limited to alittle bow huting when I was in high school, havent hunted elk in 10 years.  My dad, mom, wife and I ae now putting in for cow permits.  So I will be hunting Elk again.

You should try to live your dream at least one time before you depart this world.
