I hunted CO for 16 years and never fell but at the San Carlos Apache Indian Rez the land is covered with igneous bombs that are oblong and round making walking extremely difficult if not down right hazardous,as I tried to pass under a blown down tree I stepped on a rolly bomb & went airborne landing on my back.I've always carried another rifle with me on hunting trips but not this one as I thought the terrain would be similar to the area around Tucson where I did field work while completing my BS in Wildlife Mgt, big mistake won't happen again.

My favorite powder for my Sako 06 is IMR 4831 ,it has been glass bedded & tuned which really makes a difference .I prefer the Nosler Reloading Manual. My favorite & most accurate bullet for my 06's is the 165gr Nosler Solid Base.Last year my Apache guide informed me he always uses a 270 130gr bullet for Mule Deer & Elk. I fell off 25' cliff one night in Durango Co. while elk hunting. My back pack saved my back on the rocks but not my knee.

The 30-06 handles the 180 grain bullets a bit better than the 200 or 220 weight bullets, as far as velocity and flatness of trajectory go. If I were using the the 30-06 caliber on bull elk, I would indeed pick a premium bullet in the 180 grain bullet weight. I once witnessed a 447 yard kill on a bull elk in Wyoming, one shot was all it took to the vitals.

Hiball, You really need to look at trajectories of 220 gr vs 180 gr. Actually there isn't that much differnce out to 300 yds. Also it isn't any harder to aim 5 inches high vs 2" high if you have to compensate.
BTW, I have shot three elk within 1 minute at 437 laserd yds with my .06 with 220 gr bullets. All three were one shot kills. This was in a year when CO allowed three elk tags .
H4831 is my favorite powder with either 180 gr or 220 gr.

I've had good luck for many years with Nosler partition bullets in 30-06 and 300 Weatherby. Depending on what and where I'm hunting, I'ts 180gr in the '06 with 60gr H4831, which has been my favorite powder for nearly 40 years. Standard primers work well with this load. As a matter of fact, my M70 has digested over 50 lbs, all with standard primers, mostly CCI 200. In the 300 Weatherby, I usually use 200gr partitions w/IMR7828SC, and mag primers. Since Hodgdon bought IMR, they've reduced most of the loading data from IMR. I guess this means that the old data loads that I have on hand are dangerous bombs, and have to be dismantled. On second thought, since my Weatherby shot the old loads just fine, with no excessive case expansion and good reloadability, I think I'll just shoot them up. Opinions?? Good shooting .

Saddlesore, I already know the facts on the 220 grain bullet weight in the 30 caliber OK. Somes years ago I was introduced to the 30-06 via some fellow tradesmen, who in fact used those heavy bullets on moose and bear. I used a .270 Winchester and change my tune to a 300 Win mag right after that moose hunt.
Now as matter of fact, it was the "go to" bullet weight for most who hunted those big bears up North. In those days, getting your hands on a .375H&H was tuff to do for a working stiff. The 06 and Winchester Silver Tips were a great combination.
