I was successful in the drawing for my either sex Elk hunt this Oct . the results are posted on the CDW web site . I got drawn for the Either Sex Rifle , Oct 14 thru 18. I am looking forward to being in the Rocky Mountains again. I will leave my 338's at home this year and use my 280 Ack since i have never taken a Elk with this rifle or cal. I will be working a load up with the Winchester 160 gr FailSafe .

Congrats Bea!!
Id sure love to be able to have a chance to take on of those animals....
As for your choice on Cal. , ive never had any experience with the .280....is it up to the task? How fast are you going to push the 160's?
Hope you let us know how it went!!
all the best

Good for you !!! Hope your limited draw luck is an early indicator of the success rate the rest of us will be enjoying this year ;o) .
Just sent in my app. for antelope and elk. Tried the "land owner preference" option this year for antelope to see if that helps draw chances any. Probably not. Probably just donating $$$ to the FWP again this year. Oh well.
Looking forward to the end-hunt report. >> klallen

I'm hoping to get around 2900 or better . The 280 Ack has done a great job on everything i have shot with it. I have killed a number of deer and one bear with this rifle and all but one buck didn't die in his tracks and ran about 50 yards before giving up the ghost. I built my 280 Ack with a SS Douglas # 2 barrel ,LH 700 action and High West Stock. This rifle is one of my lightest hunting rifles and a joy to shoot and hunt with . I can't tell the difference in killing power between it and the 7mm Mag. Kalen i hope you are successful in getting your tags and Grey i wish you could join us on the hunt because you would be truly welcome. If the rifle doesn't like the Failsafe I have one hundred 160 gr Accubonds I will try. This rifle has never grouped greater than a inch with any load I've tried in it , with most going 1/2 or better.

I don't pay a guide , I hunt public land and the cost of the license is your biggest output. I love hunting on my own and just can't stand the idea of being lead around the woods by someone else. I don't see a lot of Elk, but if you stay at it soon or later you will get your chance . It may not be this season, but the fun is being in the Rocky Mountains . You hunt for days and then it all comes down to less than 60 seconds , if you mess the chance you go home empty handed , and if you don't you have a Trophy that nothing else can compare to, not counting the excellent steaks on the table.

Congrats on getting a tag Bea. October sounds like a good time to hunt.
If I get drawn for a cow tag here in CA the hunt days are the end of August. Too hot then I think, but if I get drawn you can bet I'll be out doin' my part.
Best of luck when the time for your hunt comes.

I received my Elk tag in the mail yesterday, hope it was good trade for 500.00 dollars. Colorado is still the lowest priced tag to hunt Elk.

Bea
How much does an Elk weigh without insides, skin or head? just the carcass weight?
Id like to knoe so i can make a comparison on wieght to some of our African species.
It always looks really big and impressive on the photos, and it would be my dream to one day hunt one....
All the best

I would say the average Public land bull will dress 450 to 600 lb and a good one will go quite a bit more. Some of the other guys on the forum , who live out west and see many more field dressed bull can maybe give you a better answer.

Hey Beal;
you said: "I received my Elk tag in the mail yesterday, hope it was good trade for 500.00 dollars. Colorado is still the lowest priced tag to hunt Elk. "
Hate to tell ya bud, here in Oregun our app fee is only $4.50 and if you don't get the draw then you don't pay the tag - which is only $34.50 for residents and $361.50 non res.

Medium size bulls go about 100lbs a quarter. Most go about 75-80lbs/quarter. Cows will go about 60-80 lbs per quarter Last edited on Sun Jun 18th, 2006 06:29 PM by saddlesore

I guess i wasn't that far off on a field dressed bull and cow. The hide and head are quite a load.

Checked the DFG site today and found I didn't get drawn for an elk tag.
The area I applied for listed 12 bull tags and 13 cow tags. After the F&G did a species population survey they lowered it to just 6 tags each. Must have something to do with logging and habitat since the hunt area is on timber company land.
Oh well, there's always deer season.
