I don't know if this is the right place to post this, though it makes sense in that it is the elephant gun. The question that I have is: What type of weapon and who is the maker of the Elephant Gun seen in many of the movie safari hunts and on Tremors. Is this thing for real or is it just a prop for Hollywood? Thanks for any info.

if your talking the big double rifle, it's most likely a 600 nitro express, not sure who actually made the gun, but yes they really did have big bores like that! most came about back before smokeless powder, the lack of high velocity required them to compensate by making really large slugs, also look into the howdah guns, really big pistols! they were used to shoot tigers of the back of the elephant you were riding on during tiger hunting

I'm no expert on big bore rifles, but the cartridges termed "Nitro Express", were not BP cartridges, and didn't develop during the BP period. "Nitro" was a refernce to the propellant, to differentiate it from the older BP types. Many of the BP catridges had loads updated with smokeless, and were called "Nitro for Black Powder",meaning they used smokeless, but operated at BP pressures and velocities.
Again, I'm no expert but from what I have read, the .600 NE was never a popular cartridge. I believe it was developed by Jeffery & Company. The .577 was apparently much more common.

Thanks for the info. I am thinking that when I start collecting weapons this will be one of the first I add. It sounds like it would sit well as a centerpiece. On second thought. Maybe not. Did a check and it prices at about 35k. Back to square one. Haha.

oops, clarification here. didn't mean to indicate that the 600 nitro express was black powder, just that the really large bore guns started as black powder! like the 30-30 and the 45-70 that made the transition from black powder into the smokeless powder age! if my reading memory serves me the large bores like the 500, 577, 600 became the "nitro express" when they started loading them with cordite! my apologies if my reply was misleading!

most of the Nitro express are made by Holland&holland and where double rifles, with some being Bolt action. most are in the 470 to 750 range and are not cheap .
I own a 600 NE in a Whitworth and its not cheap to shoot as in the cost of ammo and the cost of it doing to your shoulder

Thanks for the replies guys. I did some checking on the Nitro Express and came up with it and it is very expensive. One price stated on last post. I guess I can find a non-firing one to use as a centerpiece. Might be a little cheaper. Haha.

Well its not quite the same thing but I know BassPro Shop had a replica they sold of 'The Kodiac Express' that was a front stuffer (IIRC) double rifle in .75 cal. Kind of a neat critter.

I am not really big on the subject but my son and his friends watched that movie Tremors (I think there were a couple of sequels) a lot. I think one time when I passed the boob tube I heard the guy (Michael Gross - one of the most anti-gun people in Hollywood) say it was an 8-Bore.
A good friend happens to have an 8-Bore double rifle. I forget who made it. But it would be one of the "Black Powder Express" cartridges.
Let's see a 12 Bore is about .70 caliber and a 4 Bore is about 1" (1.0 Caliber) so I guess an 8 Bore is likely about .80 or .84 Cal but that is just a guess off the top of my head.
OTOH, most of the safari shows who use double rifles as Elephant guns are using modern "Nitro Express" rifles. I think Teddy Roosevelt's was a 500/.450 (I actually get to see it from time to time as it resides in the Frazier Arms Museum in Louisville), which was pretty typical but other popular calibers were .500, .577 and 600 Nitro Express. There is now a .700 but I have not actually seen one of those.
As a side note I have a bolt action in .458 Lott (500 gr bullet at 2350 fps). I told my wife it was for keeping the elephants out of her rose garden. It works. Since I bought the rifle not a single elephant has trampled her roses (no fair pointing out that before I purchased the rifle no elephants had run through there either )
Cheers,
Riposte

Thanks for the inof Riposte, I will look into this as well. See, I like when people can lead you to other information. It helps a lot. I liked watching Tremors. It was an okay set of movies. Showed what you could possibly do if you aren't prepared as you had expected for something. I like being prepared for strange occurrences. Besides, who of you big game hunters wouldn't like to see a big worm mounted on your wall? Haha.
I have an interest in the craftsmanship of guns and I like to find out about any that I see in movies. Hopefully they will be real and legal if I like them. Then it's just me. I also like Star Wars and I know I won't find a blaster anytime soon. Haha.
Have fun all.

Yeah, you will. The blasters were modified C96 Mauser pistols (AKA Broomhandles), and the Jawas carried cut down No4 MkI Lee Enfields.

Most of the better double guns made today are by MERKEL.
