i'm sure we've run this topic to death somewhere in BSB's past, but what the heck, hunting season is on and it never hurts to hash it out again, right?

i've een thinking about this this morning, and i always come back to the partition; the front half expands dramatically, the back half pushes it through - every time, for all game except the true monsters requiring solid bullets. in my mind, i would have the most confidence in the partition should i ever be in a situation to "need" one.

having said that, my own conclusion is that one does not always NEED the partition. for my own hunting, with the moderate-velocity cartridges i use (.308, 7x57, .30/06 etc.) the powerpoint/spirepoint/corelokt/gameking-type PSPs will probably always be more than "good enough," for lack of a better term - for MY hunting. when i say good enough, i mean that i have used them all my life, have confidence in them, and know through experence that they will always take down the game that "i" hunt, where "i" hunt and how "i" hunt.

accubonds, ballistic tips, SSTs, TBBCs and other premium bullets are certainly fine, and will work great for those who choose to use them and have become familiar with them and have confidence in them. i believe that confidence, experience and familiarity with what the rifle/bullet combination will do are probably most important of all. if YOU think a particular bullet is your best choice, then YOU should use it, because when YOU believe in something, it seems to always have a much better chance at success.

if i were to ever actually pay to hunt at some exotic place somewhere such as alaskka, new mexico, colorado, europe, australia etc., i would probably "step up" to partitions, just as some added insurance. the higher cost would be balanced by the confidence that would come from that little bit of added performance that the partition will deliver. unnecessary? maybe - but once again, confidence is a big player....i've seen firsthand that confidence leads to success.

those are my thoughts - anyone else?

Ed

I hear you, and agree, it depends to a large extent how, what and with what you are hunting?

Ive sticked to Interlocks my and Gamekings since i started hunting 15yrs ago, and I've learned that it is dependable in my kind of hunting.

80% of regular hunting here is mostly blesbuck, springbuck, impala, and for that you don't need to go the premium route.

don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against them, and if someone is willing to spend the extra $(and can afford to) then do it.

I don't think ill go the premium route, as the standard stuff works for me. Iv i do go after something bigger like Kudu, Gemsbuck or the like , its a question of not taking chances, and KNOW what the bullet you are using can, or cant do?

Just my thoughts on the subject

All the best

Tas,

Yep I think the majority of it is the confidence factor.  I'd also say that more folks concentrate on a bullet's accuracy rather than performance.  I'm not convinced that's the way to go because in all honesty most rifles are accurate enough for hunting purposes at most ranges folks should be shooting (I'm including Joe Public in this statement).

Personally, I just keep on trying different stuff.  I enjoy it as do most who reload.  I haven't hunted the world over just yet but I have run into a myriad of situations on eastern critters.

I think the secret to the "perfect game bullet" is impact velocity.  Too fast causes weight loss, too slow causes inferior penetration on game.

Of all the bullets I've tried, the only one I don't really care for is the Combined Technologies Ballistic Silvertip.  I used it on a whitetail doe out of my 7 STW at a distance of around 100 yards.  Though it dropped the deer from a steeply angled chest shot, it was an inferior penetrator and required a second shot.  From this high velocity caliber I expected more but it was too much speed for this bullet which was designed for longer ranges.  Yes, it was outside of the design parameters but how sure can we as hunters be that we'll be 100% sure of the range to game each time we go afield?

Of the non-bonded flavors of bullets, I think the Partition is perfect for a lot of situations for the reasons you mentioned.  Though I haven't tried them, there are some Speers (Bear Claw I believe) that utilize the same principle - a rapidly expanding front bumper followed by a heavier solid shank for penetration.  They're a bit pricey but I know a guy in my office who has used them on elk, bear and deer from a 338 with 1 shot results.  I'm sure there are other bullets out there that can do the same.  Confidence by the shooting most likely being the biggest reason for using them.

Hey tas, I have full confidence in my loads wih Barnes XBT's I have taken everything from a Jackrabbit to a Eland with them. as for a premo bullet there are so many other there.

I would say if you are going on a hunt of a lifetime I wouldn't skimp on the bullet as its the cheapest part of your hunting rig.

any of the one you named are great along with Barnes, and Swift and the others .

So
I would say shoot what works the best for you and Bullet placement is more tehn just a saying.

I agree , the Ballistic tip (Nosler) same thing, blows all to hell when using my 300 ultra mag or 7mm mag. So did the Hornady bonded,Nasler accubond and even the Swift Scirroco wasn't so swift either. The Barnes X bullets be it XBT's or any of them are the way to go. I get great accuracy from the 180 gr. Barnes triple shok. Even with max load at chrono'ed 3360 fps. I can get .75 to 1.0 in grps. with 100.0 grs. of Hogdon Retumbo. I want to try their new US869 but can't locate any here locally.
