Took these about 15 yrs ago. Some guys think they are really funny although I did not prop the bear to be funny. Something about looking like, " A drunken sailor."

Maybe you'll laugh.

Drunken sailor going to have a head ache tomorrow

This one I refer too as "cabin break in bear." We had a couple of attemped bear break in's at the rat shack by the Silver Bay Airport. I drew a bear license from the State lottery by chance and baited the area with poor results. So I was sleeping in the morning of the bear opener with plans of a leisure breakfast and grouse hunting after breaky (I was on vaca ya know).

Anyway my rest was disturbed as I heard some kind of commotion outside and looked up from my bunk to see a bear looking in at me. It was "cabin break in bear" but the landlord was home!!

I ran outside and blasted it with the .44 mag Desert Eagle as it took off running and it dropped like sack of tator's, but the story was not over.

This bear was a small sow that at most weighed 150 pounds, which is an average size esp with a sow that has (3) cubs in tow. I didn't know she had cubs and even to this day I would still blast her because she was teaching the cubs to break into cabins and the damage the (4) of them would have made inside had they gained entrance would have been total destruction!

These cubs were about the size of my pit bull "Duke" who weighs 70 pounds, just compact him down a little and  put a lot of fur on him. And they are just as powerful as a pit bull.

I did feel sorry for them as they hung around the area after I gutted her and had her hanging and draining. In fact they gathered around her and then I really felt sorry for the young sucklings as I noticed they appeared to be attempting to nurse from her.

Well...the pity turned to anger as I realized they were really tearing meat off of her and eating it. I chased them off and put her in my giant bear cooler (filled with 54 blocks of ice) in the pick up truck.

One of them did come back later that afternoon for a snack but I chased him off and I believe the gut pile was gone the next morning.

Never saw them again. The break in's stopped and no one else had probs either in area. Did they live I don't know. They probably continued to travel together splitting up what food they found and once they ran into a male bear one of them probably became food.

They're nothin but giant rats with stubby tails that eat their own kind.

No not every year. I suppose it's been about 10 times since 1983. It's a lot of work finding and hauling bait. You need to keep it supplied once you find the right combination of goodies and then they can get burned out right before the opener because the State of Minnesota opens the season right after the berries and nuts are at their peak so they have plenty of food everywhere.

It's really just a buffet for them. I do think every bear is unique in their tastes. You can see them dig thru everything and say eat only the marshmallows like I pretty much bypass everything and go for the deep fried shrimp always at a buffet. I did have a source for donuts this year and that is one thing they all seem to love.

Sweet and sour combination that worked well last fall on the bear I took

I'm just getting geared up for hauling road kill deer up to the shack and baiting the coyote/fox. I take a weeks vacation and I sit over the bait at night. Will probably make the 1st run New Year's day.

I suppose it is close to leopard hunting with bait while in a blind. At least some of Peter Capsticks books I've read it seems similar.

I'm exactly 100 yards away on a slight hill on above pic. I use a Schmidt and Bender 8x power with 56mm objective and an extremely heavy outer cross hair. Even on the darkest of nights I can see them esp this location because it is open fairly well around the carcass as you can see. In the deep woods it is harder to see. Sometimes I can't make the shot.

Hey Wolfkill, started snowing up here today.  It's supposed to snow until Sunday.  That will help with the night hunting.

Yes...and they always like to move after a good snow.

Nothing worse then crawling out of the ole' sniper bunker at dawn and walking down to the bait to see they had visited sometime in between the cat naps I take.

Snooze you lose!:shameon:

Pic of fresh fox scat last December. You can see it was still warm enough to melt the snow flakes that were hitting it.

He had moved through the area 150 yards from bait above and I had high hopes for him that weekend but he never showed.
