This is a little off the beaten path.I don`t like very many hunting shows.A few I do but for the most part I don`t.I think they should show it for the way it is.A animal lungshot on the ground drowning in its own blood or a guy with blood up to his elbows gutting a animal...
I say this, because many of these shows portray to those who don`t know a false image..Most shows are like, climb up in the blind..and man here comes a trophy class animal right away.:confused:What about those other 20 times sitting in a cold ass stand and not seeing shit..
Now the animal just runs up and all the whispering going on our Hunter makes a oneshot drop..Wow the animal just falls right down every time.Doesn`t suffer a bit  hmmm.
Then we can all walk up to our critter which is always dead and never heaving blood from the lungs through his mouth and nose..Gee that could never happen cuase they fall right down on the shows..

Sarcasm aside,I don`t think they portray what they should. You get a guy who has never hunted big game and just watched these stupid shows. He is in for a big damned shock as soon as he pulls that trigger...

But I really don`t like this pompous arrogant guy Tred Barta..I wonder how many animals he gut shoots and wounds with his longbow that they never find.

Alright, lets hear who you don`t like..

Any show that turns the camera off before the kill shot.  They don't want to offend the antis.

The Spirit of the wild isn't affraid to show kill shots, death seens, blood trails, and bloody bullet holes.

Gene - you know my point of view on this.  After witnessessing a couple of hunting/fishing shows that were filmed on my uncle's ranch, I think most of these guys are douche bags.  Just my not so humble opinion.  If anyone wants more detail, I can post it.  :homer:

This topic tends to come up from time to time but each time my answers vary a little bit.

On one hand, most of the shows I watch on The Men's Channel are nothing more than a bunch of average guys with a large budget to go on an outfitted hunt and kill something before the camera offering their sponsors lots of opportunities to advertise their junk while sheeple believe these "hunters" are experts to be admired.  Most of the time, it's behind some fence somewhere with plenty of feeders around to "manage" the herd.  Couple all of this with a persistent and poorly played rock and roll theme song for the lentire ength of the show and you've got the makings of a totally bogus bit of testosterone soap opera.

On the other hand, I'm glad they offer them so people who may never seen hunting before at least get some exposure to it - albeit not the best exposure.  Let's face it, there's probably not too many folks in urbania that are able to drive 15 minutes after work and go do some hunting!

I guess my take on the whole matter is that I'm glad somebody is putting hunting shows on TV but the quality of the shows is usually pathetic.

Tred Barta is an egotistical ass who can't hunt anywhere but on outfitted hunts.  Jackie Bushman is a fool who likes to discuss how "good" and "challenging" the hunt was even though the hunter(s) merely drove to or was dropped off near an elevated shack to sit comfortably for a couple of hours and snipe deer or other game.

I don't watch any shows with regularity but I kinda like the Realtree Road Trips, Roger Raglin (love-hate relationship with that guy), there's a few that are public land hunting and DIY types that are often out west that are pretty good.  Other than that, most of them are just a bunch of misinformation crap on hunting junk - the "cough silencer" give me a friggin break you still make noise if you hold your nose and mouth shut and cough so how is this piece of PVC pipe going to quiet it.  Bows, bows, and more bows, nice to know the products but Dave Twatson needs to go back to singing with the Oak Ridge Boys and leave the hunting scene - at least that's what outfitters who I've talked to and hunted with him have said.

o.k. I'm done ranting.

sort of a catch-22 situation.  The shows bring new blood into hunting and the outdoors and grow the industy which we all need to keep hunting legal and available in this country.  But like Mountaineer so astutely pointed out, in order for the shows to be watchable they have to go to extremes which are not the normal fair of hunting.

Two years ago I took a friends son hunting. He had never killed anything so I was determined to help him get his first. He hunted with a lever action 30-30 Winchester. After a few trips we had seen several deer and finally he had a shot that was just right. I had told him to take his time, he had all the time in the world. Well I had to stand up and stretch and just as I did a small herd walked out. One of the bigger does spotted me and was just waiting for me to move. It seemed like 10 minutes of standing there waiting for him to shoot. Well he finally did. He shot it in the ass and broke its back. He is as exited as you all were on your first kill and he ran out there just as hard as he could. She was trying to get away with her front legs so he tried to shoot her in the head but he missed, and shot her nose off. I told him to finish her with a neck shot behind her ear. Well in his exitement he missed and shot one of her front legs off. He was out of ammo by now so I told him he would have to cut her throat. Now he is a little nervous about getting kicked or hurt in some way. Even though she only had one good leg. Well I give him my knife and he presses it to her throat and makes a fast clean slice.... He doesnt get the arteries or the throat so the deer is just further mutilated. I told him to give me the knife and I would finish her but he said no. This was his first so he wanted to do it. This time he got a better cut but still not quite enough to kill her. She was bleeding out better now so we walked to the truck to put our rifles and gear then we came back to drag her out. The deer was a poor sight but the boy had never been happier. You dont ever see that kind of action on a T.V. show and you cant replace the feeling.

I'd have to say this one:  Jimmy Houston

http://www.real-hunters.com/full.swf

This has got to be the worst thing to happen to hunting shows that ever came down the pike!  I sent him a email, and never received a response from him(like he cared). I have pretty much not watched any of these shows since.  Guess the sponsors will get the message from my wallet?

There's a lot of show hosts and so-called "professional" hunters on the small screen who are less then impressive but I can't think of a specific show I think is worst.

What I've noticed in lots of shows that's more and more becoming the trend rather then the exception that I dislike more then anything is the cheering and chest bumping after these nuts have pulled off an easy shot; like they've accomplished something or it's the first animal they've ever taken.  Good lord.  I swear, I've seen at least two fellas (can't think if their names but can see their faces in my head) who darn near work themselves into tears after every shot.  They get themselves worked up into full body shakes with their self-congratulation and fist pumping.

They look like such classless freaks and they don't even realize it.

That is a good point.

After I pull the trigger, I actually have a moment of regret and remorse.  I don't like the actual act of killing an animal.  Then it passes as emotions settle and rational, logical thought ensues and on the times I have taken a nice trophy I then get a little winward.

But I always say a little prayer for those animals I harvest whether trophy or cull.  All God's creatures they are.

Morning M V  >>  I think I get just as excited as the next fella when a top notch trophy opportunity presents itself and am just as happy with myself when I'm successful at taking the animal but the extent of the post-kill celebration is catching my breath & walking up to the animal once it's down (if I'm alone) or a small word of congratulations and a handshake if I'm with my hunting partners.  End of celebration.

As far as a private prayer after the kill, I'm cool with that.  I am indeed thankful for the opportunity to fill the freezer and feed the family and quickly, privately convay my thanks with each kill.  I have seen it go overboard, though.  I saw a show that was obviously angled towards the christian hunter that was funny.  Hunters were very vocal with their "praise Jesus" and "thank the Lord" for helping with the kill, as they're holding their dead animal up for the camera.  I kind of akin that to an athlete in post game interviews "thanking the Lord" for helping his team defeated another.  I'm not necessarily the most religious of men so I can't be sure about this but I would have to imagine the Lord has far more pressing things to think about then whether the Detroit Pistons beat the Miami Heat last night in the NBA.  LOL.  I could be wrong, though.  He may be a Piston's fan   .  Later.  >>  korey

I hear you man.  I've always contended that I'm never going to bother the big guy unless it is really important.

For some reason, I think God would probably say "Great, you shot a deer, I'm happy for you.....now gut, skin and eat the damn thing, I'm a little bit more concerned about the crazy Iranians starting WWIII than the 10 point you just whacked."

I don't particularly care for any of them myself. Born and raised in Monatna, hunting was, and still is, a pretty natural thing to do. I really get PO'd when I see the canned hunts with the feeders, the Nimrod perched in a covered stand, and sporting a rifle that is entirely too overbore or overpowered for the task at hand. "WOW! What a GREAT SHOT!!" But, face it guys, it's turned into a buisness, with all the attendant BS and advertising. As long as someone can lift a buck off some poor dope, they're gonna do this nonsense. It's part of the reason I won't EVER use an outfitter. Outfitters have taken over more private hunting ground than you can imagine. I used to hunt in southeast Montana when I was a kid. I imagine alot of you have heard about the big bucks around Broadus. Now, even the local kids can't get a place to hunt there. They have to travel west to Custer National Forest to hunt.  The day I need an outfitter to hunt, that's the day I quit hunting.:bulletcaster:
