Evening Fellas >> I'll be the first to tell ya that most, if not all, of my hunting season is centered around big Mule deer. I love them.
With this being the case, by choice, circumstance or what-have-you, I don't have the experience with Whitetails that lots of posters here might have. Matter of fact, my experience with these animals can be summed up in two hunts.
The first (my largest) was taken with my 7.82 Warbird using a 200 gr. Nosler AccuBond. He followed a doe out early morning and bedded down some 750 yds. in front of us (my father was along for this hunt). We watched him for a couple hours judging the horn and trying to guess his next move. Well, his next move was to make no move. The doe never moved from here bedded down position so this buck never moved from his. So I started moving up the fence line that you see in the pic on my stomach, post by post. It was a good 500 yd. belly crawl to the point where I wanted to be. Even so, he was well covered by brush and I would need him to stand for a shot to be taken. The wait was on. He caught me off-guard with one opportunity getting up quickly and resituating himself. I felt aweful stupid. Eventually, he did get up again and I was ready. I felt the aftermath of the belly crawl in my back, hips and arms for weeks to follow. But I was happy. He is a heavy, even 5x5 that measured 146 7/8" (green) :

My 2nd was taken with my .264 WinMag using a 120 gr. Ballistic Tip. This was a strange hunt as I was on the stalk for another large Whitetail. The sun was setting fast and because of this and the distance I needed to cover, I simply ran out of light. I did catch the glimpse of white tail flagging as the he made his excape. I was dejected by how the whole thing had played out. I sat there for a minute rethinking what I'd done wrong. How I'd work things different the next time. Then turned around to head back to the truck. I just caught movement off some 140 yds. or so. I fell down and got my scope on what was moving. I could see he was a Whitetail buck following a doe. They'd have snuck clean behind me if I'd have sat 5 minutes longer contimplating the failure of the first hunt. When he turned my direction, I could see that he was relatively wide but couldn't make out the points. At this direction, looking back where the sun had set, the last light did give an opportunity for a shot. I waited for him to come to a broadside stop and took the shot. The Sightron performed wonderfully in another low-light situation. When I walked up to see exactly what he was, I was happy. It was a good way to end a season. He's a 4x4 that measured 131 7/8" (green) :

Well, that's the long and short of it. Like I said, not much experience but these two animals provided me with two great hunts, plenty of memories and lots of meat for the freezer. Later. >> klallen

klallen,
If those two whitetail experiences are the only two you have then you're most fortunate by whitetail standards.
Great stories and I look forward to seeing you take a few more deer with those rifles of yours, especially the whitetail.

Thanks Guys.
I agree with TIMBER, BEA175. That's one full box.
Were I hunt Whitetail, over the coarse of a season (depending on how much time ya want to put in, of course), we'll generally be doing good if we can get on one, maybe two trophy class (for the region) Whitetail bucks. Mule deer the same way. The animals just have so much terrain to cover, they can by-pass our hunting locations real easy. That's what makes it so exciting. Ya just never know, leaving from home, if you're going to be coming home without seeing anything promising or you're going to score into something real big. The 6x5 Mulie buck in my avatar was taken on this land (scored 176+) not 300 yds. from where I got the top Whitetail. It's just a nice piece of family land with great deer and antelope opportunities, if ya want to spend a lot of time working it right. I am very thankful we've got access. Later. >> klallen

I thank the good lord everyday for all the deer i have able to take over the years . I love the outdoor more that life itself, without it i have no reason to exist, dieing would be better. Glad you have a great place to hunt, don't let it get away , keep it in the family.
