Had a real good time in Colorado this last week.  Went down with 50 and our father.  This was the first testing grounds for the new Springfield 1903 .280 Rem. AI and the 140 gr. AccuBond.  Things went well.  I took two animals.  This Corsican Sheep on Tuesday :

And this Catalina Goat on Wednesday :

The Corsican measured 107 2/8" with both bases going over 9".  The Catalina measured 100 3/8" with 6 1/2" bases.  Didn't find a bullet.  Took close (75 yds.) and longer (270 yds.) shots.  Just not enough mass to keep the AccuBond in.  Would love an antelope hunt in the fall to be the next testing grounds for the .280 AccuBond, but I've not been all that successful drawing that permit.

I just finished boiling the Catalina skull earlier this evening.  Did the Corsican yesterday.  I'm going to european mount both for now, but will get the capes tanned just in case the bug bites sometime in the future to have shoulder mounts made.

Just a great experience all around.  Can't wait for the next family hunt !!!  >>  klallen

Nice going on those animals Klallen.   A family hunt is always fun, especially if you bring home some good trophies and memories.   75 yards???   That's to close for you.

Good looking rams , and the 280 Ack is my favorite . I haven't tried the Accubonds in my 280 AI as of yet, but will in the future. I presently load two load for my 280 AI the 150 Nosler CT BT with Rel 22 and the Speer 160 gr FB Hot Core with Hod 4831 both are super killers in the 280 Ack. I have the 140 gr Accubonds loaded in my Wby in 7mm STW but haven't tried them on game. Again nice animals.

Thanks !!!  It was a lot of fun.

TIMBER, spending time with the family was the best part of the whole trip.  The fact that we were hunting and each experienced successful hunts just took it to that next level of enjoyment.  I've no time-frame on those european mounts but as soon as they're finished, I'll post a couple pics.

GUNRUNNER, I hear ya with that 75 yd. shot.  Funny thing is, with the way that Corsican was working the thick brush and hillside, I'd have been completely happy to have been able to bonk him on the head with the butt of my gun at 2 ft. if the opportunity would have presented itself.  He didn't make it easy.  Which is the way a "hunt" is supposed to be.  Definitely not a "canned" hunt or corraled hunt.  We had the Catalina within 30 yds. or so on the first day but never took the shot.  I can remember the guide looking over his shoulder at me, as we were looking at him, and saying "He's a nice trophy".  I agreed and commented, "We're a little close, aren't we?"   He chuckled.  From talking with the owner and our guide, I got the impression that they really didn't have many guys taking shots past 100, 150 yds.  And thankfully so, if ya know what I mean.  As it worked out, I'm kinda glad 270 was as close as we got to the Catalina on the second day.  I wanted the opportunity for a 250 + yd. shot with the .280 just to see what the bullet would do on game at that range.

BEA, I dare say I'll never load anything but these AccuBonds in my .280 .  A sturdy 140 gr. bullet at 3250 fps covers a lot of bases with the game and terrain I typically hunt in MT.  I agree with ya completely with the respect for the .280 AI.  It was a great choice for my Springfield.  I need to get this load on the larger Mulies and Whitetail that we see during our big game hunting season, but from this Colorado experience, there's going to have to be a heck of a lot more body mass to keep the bullets from exiting.  And the way the 160 AccuBond performed from my 7mm RUM last year on a deep penetration 6x5 Mule Deer shot, maybe deer won't even keep'm in.  We shall see.  Either way, I think you'll be completely satisfied with the big game performance  of the AccuBond from your 7mm STW.  Looking forward to on-game results when you can get some.

Later, guys.  >>  klallen
