Evening Gentlemen >> It's late and well past my bed time so I'm gonna make this quick.
Filled my tag earlier this evening. Ran up to the hill after work with my father. We'd come up yesterday and not seen anything and we had little hope of seeing much today with the same strong winds and high temperatures of yesterday. But, low'n behold, things don't quite happen like you think they will.
Glassed several Mulies over the course of a couple hours with this one being the largest of the day. An extremely short stalk and a 250ish yd. plinker with the 7.82 Warbird and my 2007 general deer season was over.
Haven't take any time for measurement particulars yet but that will come.
Hope all your seasons are going well. I'm off to bed. >> korey

Korey,
That's an awesome mule deer! Great job! Just goes to show you that you gotta be out there, to get one, regardless of weather. Been following your gallery and noticed that you used your 7.82 warbird on the antelope as well. Any particular reason you prefer the warbird over the 280 AI for these critters? Just curious. I figured it might've been because of the higher winds.
Regardless, great story and pics as always. Congratulations!

Morning MR. MOUNTAINEER. Thank you. How goes the great state of WV?
I chose the Warbird this year for several reasons. First, I hadn't taken anything with it since 2003. Basically, it was its turn in the batting order, I guess. But more then that, Hornady had just recently come out with that new 208 gr. .308 A-Max, too. I wanted to create an opportunity this year for a shot on antelope (under workable conditions) at 500+ yds. so the Warbird / high BC A-Max seemed the perfect combo for the job. Throw into the mix the fact that I wasn't entirely sold on the thinking that the A-Max was sturdy enough for a big game hunting bullet so a thin-skinned antelope hunt seemed the best and least taxing (on the bullet anyway) test medium for some useful on-game results.
With what what I saw, it gave me confidence to stick with the Warbird during deer season and see exactly what the bullet would do on a larger animal. Impact was just behind the on-side shoulder, and exited pert-near the same place, opposite side. Massive distruction on the ribs with bone shrapnal shredding lung. The bullet itself completely took out the top of the heart. When we get to butchering, I'll look closer at the front shoulders to see if any big bone there was clipped or not. All in all, again, the 208 A-Max impressed me. Personally, I wouldn't go any larger of animal for the bullet and probably wouldn't consider a higher velocity impact of under 100 yds. ideal for the bullet, but for my purposes, I'm happy with how everything worked.
Take care. >> korey

Great looking buck Korey. Very symetrical and eyeguards even. What more could you ask for? Wish they grew like that around here.
Pretty much a chip shot for the Warbird. Take 'em where you can.

Thanks, SS. Yeah, compared to what Kirby and the rest of you fellers are doing over there on LRH, pretty much everything I do big game wise is chip-shot stuff. You're right though, this one certainly didn't test the Warbirds capabilities.
Much appreciated, M V. Hope you're having another successful year down on the ranch with some big animals and quality hunters.
TAZ, I'll be the first to admit I'm not a huge Hornadybullet user. But I've been pleasantly suprised with the performance I've gotten out of these 208 gr. A-Max's. They're still a lightly constructed bullet, but just like with using the 300 .338 MK on elk, there comes a point where sheer mass will trump frangibility with reasonable shot placement. No matter the range, I don't think I'd intentionally aim for a on side shoudler impact with'm, but from what I've seen, looking to take our off-side shoulder after shredding lung these things would pass right through on antelope and deer. I guess evaluating the performance on 2 animals in one year certainly doesn't entail a complete body of work, but it's a successful start and grounds to use this particular bullet more at various ranges and angles.
Later all. >> korey

Korey - we are having a good year but I've got a real bent for muley's. My Dad and I were trying to get a west Texas trip together for desert muleys this year but he hurt his back so that's not working out.
One of these days I'm going to mule deer hunting. I've done it once, in Idaho about 14 years ago. We saw some bruisers but never got a shot. I've wanted a big muley ever since.
Btw, what do you think that guy weighed, both field dressed and on the hoof?

Years back, there was always a FWP's check station on our way home from this area that we hunt. Our mature mulies, field dressed, often tipped the scales in the 275 - 285 lb. range. One the hoof, they'd easily surpass 300 lbs. It's been years since we've actually had one up on the scale as the station has long closed, but that 300 lb. weight has kinda become our generally accepted number for a large, mature animal. When dad and I lifting this one into the back of the truck, it was pretty evident he was as heavy a Mulie as we've ever gotten. I'd not be suprised if he exceeded 320 lbs. on the hoof. There's no shortage of alfalfa and grains of all kinds for them to eat pretty much year round so the habitat's prime for huge, healthy bodies and decent horn to match.
Here's hoping your Mulie hunt comes together soon for ya. >> korey

Sure thing, MV.
Just to round things out, finally got the tape to the horns. Came to 161 6/8" gross. 21 1/8" inside spread; 26 1/2" outside spread. That over-all gross score makes him the second largest Mulie I've been lucky enough to take, only behind the big feller that's currently my avatar.

Runt's happen. Back in 2002 I filled my tag with a 3x3 Mule Deer that barely scored 108". That's the way things go sometimes. Some years are feast; others famine. We just have to take advantage of the best opportunities that come our way. I love a good set of horn but getting meat in the freezer's also why I hunt. And that 3x3 tasted darn good. Later. >> korey
