Took a 1 1/2 year old spike this morning with the .257 Roberts I built up on a spare '95 Mauser action.Wasn't really looking for a kill, but figured at 1 1/2 with not even a fork he didn't belong in the gene pool around my place. Part of his backstrap is digesting in me now, and my dogs appreciate me when I bring home deer legs for them. Best chew toy you can get!
Used Hornady's 100 grain SP over H-4831SC. Hit him at about 80 yards, quartering away. Entrance was a bit farther back than I wanted, behind the diaphram. Went thru a couple of inches of nasty stuff, thru the diaphram, mushed the lungs, clipped o chuck of the heart, and exited just behind the off shoulder. Show NO sign of distress at the shot, and moved into the tall grass and brush. Found the impact point, and a chunk of lung tissue, but not much blood. I quartered a circle in the direction he was heading, and finally found a couple of blood spots. It was hands and knees for about 50 yards, before he started to bleed. He turned of the trail he was running, and I found him piled up just short of a nesty cedar thicket. he would have been tough to find in there. He traveled a long way with no heart or lungs, almost 100 yards.
So warm, he had flies on him by the time I found him , even though it was only 20 minutes or so.

| Here's the deer, and the rifle. I don't really consider him a buck! He should be wearing at least forks by 1 1/2. Note the rather lethal looking antlerettes! Attachment: 07spike 001.jpg (Downloaded 80 times)

Nice going. You done good to remove him the g/p.
I've always considered Ned's .257 a rifleman's rifle.

I need a 257 Bob..I like quarter bors and the 257 is based on my most beloved 7x57mm case..It should just be natural to own one..
BTW,That Mauser is pretty Charley.. Nothing like a Mauser action stands out in a photo..That buck oughta be good eating....and he definitely needed to not be breeding.

| I took a nice 8 pointer on November 20th with my .257 Roberts. I love that gun! @ 115 yard dropped like a ton of bricks hit him. bullet destryed both lungs, lodged under the hide on the offside. 100 grain Hornady sp. those things have worked for years and keep on working

I have a Ruger 77 R (a la tang safety) in 257 Roberts topped with a Leupold VX III 1.5-5X scope and am using up a batch of Speer 120 grainers powered by 43.0 grains of H-4350 and Federal GM210 primers stuffed into Winchester brass to give me 3 shot groups that range from 0.48 - 1.35 inches at 100 yards (depending on how well I hold the thing!). Muzzle velocity averages 2815 fps.

I really love this rifle and most shooters of the Roberts tend to enjoy it the same if not more. For me, it is a great woods gun, though it has potential with deer size critters up to 300 yards if you can work up good reloads and practice.
I suppose I've killed about a half dozen or so deer with it. No problems.
Congratulations on another fine take!

| Nothin' like a 257 Bob in my book. I lusted after one for years but oppertunity and means never coincided. I finally bought a Ruger 77 (without the tang safety). Now I have my eye out for a Ruger Number One in 257 Bob
