| My favorite bullet /cal for blackies over bait is my 45/70 with big round bullets(400gr) if stalking them at greater range I like my 300 win mag or 06 with 180 grainers. I like the lung/hi heart shot to damage as little meat as possible--Have never had a big problem with bears going far if shot ok-- as for shoulder to break them down-- ok on Big bears but not necessary on Blackies IMHO. You ain't shooting at a 1,000lb beast.

funny story..(at least to me)...had hunted all morning and was headed out when we saw 5 guys putting a big black something in a truck,we stoped and sure enough it was a bear. the hunter had shot it the previous afternoon with his bow,needless to say the bear rattled him pretty bad,he said he never heard such a ruckus in his life once he shot the arrow !anyhow, they looked like they hadcame from a war...handguns,two shotguns and one 338 mag. when they found the bear it was already dead so the heat wasnt needed. me and my buddy laughed the whole way to town(5 mile drive)

The caliber of choice and cartridge chosen by the Bloodtrails is more than adequate for the game. Looking at the target provided, seems to show that accuracy isn't a concern with the gun/load/hunter in question.
For a critter like a bruin, I'd agree with Wolfkill and stick with "heavy premium" bullets (that Sierra 200gr is a good choice). Shot placement is key for a quick/humane kill. It really doesn't matter what is used if you shoot it in the hind quarters.

| Load up some 200gr or 220 gr Nosler Partitions they're good performing bullets,I tried some 180gr Sierra GameKings on a Bison--- wrong bullet just penetrated thru the hide in the chest area I should've been using the Nosler 220gr Partitions I had with me--live & learn!

I've killed quite a few black bears with bow and rifle. I'll be in BC for blackbears in 10 days in fact.
I'm taking my 30.06 and 168 Barnes TTSX over 59.0 grains of Reloder 19, Lapua brass, and Fed 210 Gold Medal Match primers. I do have other options though that shot just as well or better. My 180 Accubonds with H4350 have cleanly grouped into less than 0.300 on 3 different days now.
My largest bear was over 500 pounds, killed at 12 yards. Most of my rifle killed bears were with my .06 and 180 Swift Sciroccos. I've put that bullet through 3 bear shoulders, 2 of which are on film.
Point 1) The notion that you NEED a bullet heavier than 180 grains for a larger black bear is simply not true and in my experience, not supported.
Point 2) The hunter that is going to BC with me killed his first black bear in Ontario over bait. He used a 220 Corelokt from his .06 and it certainly worked but did not pass through. Large, roundnosed bullets are designed for rapid expansion. His bullet was a picture perfect mushroom. If his bear managed to run, he had no exit and thus, no blood trail.
Point 3) All of my Sciroccos passed through, no matter the distance.
Point 4) A 300 WM shooting a 180 bullet will drop a 900+ pound bull elk at over 700 yards. I find it hard to believe the same bullet will not dump the largest of black bears at reasonable distances (ex. under 200 yards).

Nice kill there, is going to be the rug in front of your fireplace?
Over the years I have been hunting bear a few times, I started with a 30-06 with a 200 grain bullet, don't remember the load. Went to a 7mm Mag, it worked well, then to 300 Mag, but tuned the loads down a little.
The 300 Mag family, of which currently I own a 300 RUM, is great for big game distance shooting. I figure I can take a bull moose down at 200 yards with mine.
But as many people have pointed out, it where you put the bullet is the important thing. Myself, I like the Barnes bullets for larger game and they don't destroy the meat like a high expansion bullet will.
So you have done well!

| I saw an interesting item on the Outdoor Channel" Shooting Arm Support System" made by http://www.kenmarproducts.com in Canada.Gives one an elbow rest to enhance offhand shooting, one their testers used it with a crossbow to take a good black bear.I checked with Cabela's,Bass Pro & Sportsmans Warehouse, but none carry it. Why not ask on of our Canadian members to buy it for you and then ship it to the states?
I do this with pieces and parts for other things, and this is not a weapon or loaded ammo so it will go thru the mail system.
I have flat rate long distance phone service that goes into Canada and a credit card, so I may order one for myself, so far I am still using a sling to help steady me, but age and injury is catching up with me these days.

| Lots of injuries from the self defense courses I was required to take to keep my le certification plus some from hunting,lifting vw motors,etc and I'm over the hill but not under it old age has gotten me turn 74 this month,trying to get in shape for a cow elk hunt on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in October(tag was $620 no other license required). | In 05 I booked a cow elk hunt on the San Carlos Apache Indian Rez & hired an apache guide.As we were driving into an area at 6am 7 elk crossed the road in front of his truck,he turned around but as we arrived back where we saw the 7 one spike bull & 68 more anterless elk crossed the road didn't know which one to shoot.Shot a young cow.I'm here in my computer room looking out and noticed a striped skunk in the yard but didn't have any pellets handy.

maybe i'm a one bullet barney sort of guy but in the lower 48 my everything
gun/load is ruger m77, 300win mag 75gr of rl22 pushing a barnes 165gr tsx . . .
with proper shot placement (read double lung punch here with almost no meat loss)
I have never had an animal large or small take more than a couple of steps ,most
dropping on the spot.
there is no such thing as to dead . . . is there ?
my dad always told me the three most important things about hunting and shooting
(after safety)
was shot placement ... shot placement ... and shot placement

Woods,
I agree the three things about hunting, it is bullet location, location, and location.
I have heard some horror stories about people who tried to go bear hunting with very under powered rifles, like an M1 Carbine. I feel that you can never have too powerful of a rifle when you are hunting something that can take you apart in a heart beat.
