I've never considered a 30 carbine as a hunting round ,

dad always said it was the most worthless and unreliable combat cartridge around

(please no offence intended to anyone who has an affection to that round)

thinking about it I'd say a 270 or above and a well constructed bullet, and at  a minimum say 1000 ft lbs of energy at the point of delivery(impact)

Lets see, a .270 bullet that is 140 grains, Barnes TSX BT, pushed to 2,800 fps gives about 2,400 pounds of energy at the muzzle, that should do it. I would have 2 or 3 more in the magazine ready for extra shots if needed, maybe a 44 Mag as a back up.

There was some idiot back in the early 70s or the maybe the late 60s that went into the woods with an M1 Carbine hunting bear.  He unloaded his magazine into the bear, I think he irritated the bear a little too much, but was lucky to be left alive after the bear was done with him.

There was a guy in North Caroline that wend deer hunting with his AR 15 and military ammo, I heard the deer bleed to death after several rounds and the deer running for 30 to 40 minutes. This is not a nice thing to do when hunting animals. One shot, One kill, respect your prey.

I have a friend here in Washington  that went into the record book with that same set up ,we were elk hunting, him on one side of a valley me on the other , the bear weighed 350 after gutting  ,and as you say it was a one shot kill dropped on the spot.

A friend of mine over in West Virgina said the last bear he shot was with a 30-30, had her treed and then used 5 shots. Not sure of what the load or the bullet was, I just know he likes his Marlin 336 for most hunting.

model 336 30-30 was my first centerfire rifle ,I wish marlin would make a lever gun in 454casull , or now that I'm wishin  maybe  a 460 and a 500 in a lever gun now that would be a serious bear thumper and all around fun gun ,and yes I'm thinking about the model 92 puma but if i can buy an American made gun that would be my preference

I like the 444 Marlin cartridge for big game, I have one and use heavy cast bullets in it. For a slightly lighter bullet I use the 35 Remington. I am partial to Barnes bullets for factory made, I had a great seal of success Elk hunting with them, plus for cast bullets I like Ranch Dog bullets. With both I had to redo my thinking about loading my own, but my rifles became more effective with this change. When I want the most effective round to knock anything down in North America, I use my 300 RUM with a 200 grain TSX bullet. Hurts the shoulder some, but will turn a coyote inside out.

My retirement home is in the hills of Appalachia, and really long shots are blocked by mountains and valleys. I own a lot of land, but the flattest place I have for a range only gives me 145 yards. So I have a 100 yard range, but I can do the 145 yards to the backstop from my kitchen door.

The bear around me are in the 200 to 250 pound range and we are not suppose to shoot them. They get into the garbage cans and cause a mess. One morning I nailed one with a paint ball gun, it had 3 yellow spots on it's butt.

the 444 and the 450  are both good rounds with lots of power, the reason for wanting one in 454 is to be able to use the same cartridge in both wheel gun and lever gun .

Woodsman Triple Lucky,

That makes sense, but I look at the 444 Marlin as the rifle of the set and use the same bullet in my 44 Mag. By the way, Ranch Dog Molds turn out some really great bullets. I use them in my 44 calibers and my 45 caliber stuff.

I do have a mold for the 30-30 cartridge from RD that is designed for the Marlin 336, but the only corresponding hand gun is my T/C Contender 30-30. so that is not a good choice for me to carry around in the fields and the woods.

I don't have that problem and the possible future Mrs. owns a Kimber Ultra Carry. She doesn't mind my rifles and pistols, along with my target shooting, hunting, casting and reloading. Because then she knows where I am at and what I am doing instead trying to figure which bar or club I am at.

As that we don't live together, she comes out to practice on my range, to keep skill levels up. She and I G' Hog hunt together with hand guns, she has gotten 2 this year. Her philosphy is 3 in the head to make sure they are dead. Generally she unload the magazine in to the poor critter who probably died of heart failure, more than the act of being shot. :)

I do like the idea of have a rifle and pistol compliment each other. I do that with my Marlin 336 in 35 Rem and S&W 586 in 357 Mag. I use a CB that I make with a Lyman mold 368627, it's a 215 grain SWC, GC bullet from Lyman #2 Alloy or lino. This bullets works in my 357 Mag, 357 Max and my 35 Remington.

Of course I have been thing of a 45 LC wheel gun, that maybe the next purchase.

so just for the record ,Mrs woodsman is and has been very very good to me.

this year she bought me my srh in 454,

before that my  s/w 357

 before that a rem 12ga

,before that , my beloved m77 in 300 win mag  and so on . .  .

the Mrs encourages my hunting and participates in range time with me and our two youngest boys ,

She tells me she doesn't have the heart to put an animal down, but will gladly cook and eat whatever i bring home .I'm primarily a meat hunter ,and no I don't generally turn down a trophy shot ,but I'll take the little ones just as readily as the big ones , it make for very good eating for the family(especially elk )

Then you have a real special woman, hold on to her, but remember don't do anything stupid, she knows where your guns are kept.

So is my wife. She drew one of the buffalo tags in montana and shot it with my 338 win mag using 210 partitions. That gun kicks like a mule but she handled it good. She uses it and her 308 when we are looking for bear. Usually im in the bottoms with my open site 444 walking the brush and shes up high watchin for bears to run out. I think the berry run is gonna be in full swing by the opening of fall season this year...hopefully me or her or the boy of mine will get a bear and have some breakfast sausage made again.

Well bear :troll:season has been in full swing here in Washington since Aug 1st and I haven't even got close to the woods yet ,working to much- and  the real shame:sad: is I'm only 10 minutes from the woods/mountains

and next weekend I've got to decide whether to attend my oldest daughters wedding (something about a monkey suit and walking her down the isle) or go bear hunting?  Hmmmmm which will my wife let me get away with (as if i have a choice)

I've got these great loads worked up in my 454srh for up close work and some solid coppers for the reach out and touch them in 300 win mag  and but I guess the bears will have to wait :homer:

Here is BFE Ohio, if you have a CCW permit, you can carry during hunting season. If bear are involved, I would be carrying my 44 Mag, just in case. Plus I can conceal it in my hunting jacket, just so the bear doesn't see it.

But I would be using my 300 RUM with Barnes TSX bullets for bear. I have some neighbors that tell me to tree the bear and use your 30-30 on the bear, just keep firing until it falls out of the tree. I don't really want to try that method, with my luck the bear will fall out of the tree on top of me.

Washington is an open carry state ,so with some exceptions you can carry (open )

most places , and the ones  that you don't want to bring attention to your self ,you

 use your ccw permit,

out here we have bear (both kinds black and griz) cougar ,bobcat, links,

 coyotes ect.

and then  there's the two legged kind of vermin and

we sadly have all to many of those as well  .

So anytime we go in the woods/mountains  we wear sidearms

Woodsman,

That is a smart idea. Here in a Ohio a few years back, we had some gun shooting hunters. I just didn't go hunting them, because he was using a high powered rifle, while we were restricted to shotguns. Plus you could not have a handgun unless it was handgun season.

Now

We have a lot of decent sized bear here in New Mexico.  Most of them are poached by the local New Mexicans who use .243's and .30-30's.  Either one will drop a bear like a rock in the hands of a skilled shooter.

I am getting ready to go do one in in a couple weeks and I will be carrying my .53 caliber Santa Fe Hawken using soft cast 336 grain ball ets over 100 grains of FFg powder.  I can put that in the end of a bean can at 100 yards and it will just tip one of those old bears over.....................if I see one.

230 grain patched round ball works just fine also with a lung or heart shot.  Black bear is not a large or heavy animal.  They are thin skinned and thin skulled and relatively easy to kill if the shot placement is correct.

If I were to be hunting on foot over west in the mountains where the brush is thicker I would probably use my Springfield .45-70 with soft cast 500 grain bullets.  My point is, that the bear is not hard to kill and even if you use an African magnum and make a poor location shot, it isnt going to be a one shot kill.

I have one bear credit to my score sheet with the .45 Colt.  Granted, the barrel was against his nose, but it worked just fine.
