I have shot alot of bears from 150 lbs. up to 385 field dressed , truth is any gun will kill a bear given the right conditions if every thing is right however it's not always right. The300 win mag is perfect your 165 gr. bullets are what i believe would be the right choice. I shot a smaller bear with my 300 win. mag using 150 grain ballistic tips being pushed by 76.5 grains of 4350, very hot load devastating to all game.

Dad always said "you can't kill them too dead" on the other hand not dead enough can create a world of problems all its own. after saftey his three biggest things for hunting were shot placement ,shot placement and shot placement . . .

I been using the SPEER 30cal 180gr magnum mag-tips for many years. I get excellent bullet expansion and a clean quick kill with them. I tested them in wet sand at first and went out and field tested them in black bears with both results being the same with good expansion both times.
I maybe old school but i like testing a new reloads at the sand & gravel pit just after a light rain so the sand is clean and wet. I like knowing what my bullet is doing before i hunt with it.
Since my 30-06 days I have bumped up to a 338winmag using 225gr winchester X bullets and they do there job too its all about shot placement i guess i never had to look for a wounded one yet for some reason they seem to fall down right were i hit them.

Big Bill,.......I just love those .338 Winchester mags I do! However, I am not opposed to facing the old black bruin of the woods with my 444 Marlin eilther. I use the Hornady 265 grain "evulution" bullets for the bucks in the woods but for bear I jump up a notch or two, with my handloaded Beartooth hard cast 325 grain bullets. They will make a believer out of any bear!!!
However, if I am going to go after one of those big critters, I am going to put all the odds in my favor and not the bears. I like my Winchester model 70 bolt gun, in the caliber called the .416 Remington with 350 grain Trophy Bonded or Swift A Frame bullets. I once penetrated 5 logs standing back to back, that were some 6 inches thick at 30 yards and ended up going through the middle of a 3.5 inch fir tree, then traveled 10 inches into the sandy dirt bank. Needless to say, I fear NO bear with this rifle in my hands loaded.

280gr .356 jsp over 45gr of 4064, mauser 9x57. Just hopin'; the only black bear I've killed was with 14 .22 LR's (just trying to keep him from killing my dog.) The big ones do take a heap of killin'! mind yer topknot! windy

How about a 458 Win Mag? And a gun barer (no pun intended) with a heavier caliber rifle.
