Elk hunting trip coming up soon. Will be leaving in about five weeks for another Colorado Elk Hunt. How many people on the forum going for Elk this fall ? I changed the scope on my 338-06 Ack from a 3x9 to a straight 6 power Leupold ,  I will carry no more weight than needed. I have been lucky so far, killing 5 Elk out of six trips on Public Land . I will find out soon if my luck is still holding. Wish me luck and good luck to you guys this hunting season.

bea.. Good luck to you on your hunt..

I'm not going this year--not yet recovered from surgery, but just for the sake of curiosity, can you tell me the general area you will be hunting??

Had good luck over the years in the Derby Creek area near Burns Colorado, and on private and BLM land on the North Slope of the Grand Mesa.

If you take any pictures on your hunt, would you post some??

I have the good luck to be a Colorado resident and native, so my travel to the hunting areas is somewhat shorter than yours. Your dedication shows. Good hunting.

Hey, 3006 user. I hunted the Burns area for many years.( Big Springs, W Mountain,Little Sugaloaf) . I hunt mostly now on the other side over  by Sweetwater Lake, Shingle peak area, But I do ride over towards Little Sugarloaf at times.

I had major back suregery this past spring,so I will be curtailed some what ,but I have two cow tags and two deer tags in my pocket for this year. Still a heck of  a lot better than a wheel chair that I was heading for though.

Saddlesore.. Our favorite area was up Middle Derby Creek, using the trail that wound up at Trapper's lake.

Camped both inside the Wilderness area, and just outside.

It was a toss-up.. Camp inside and lug the critters and  the camp out, or camp outside.

In later years (read older),  we opted to camp outside the area.

Great hunting, but in 1974 I caught Giardia (sp) in October from drinking out of the creek. Nasty.. Lost 35 pounds by Christmas, when it finally ran it's course. Got a nice spike, so that was the good part of the trip..

Hope you are feeling fine by the season's start.

modern rifle opens the end of october for eastern washington   the units we hunt are spike only unless you were drawn for a bull/cow tag  (did'nt get drawn this year)  if you hunt western washington that starts a week later and  its three point min 'we'll be out for 9 days in  mannastash unit340) east side of the cascades. that heard has about 12000 animals in it .should be a good hunt

Friends of ours from PA have been hunting in an area in CO for elk but have seen more moose than they've ever encountered in the lower 48.

Last  year our friends were north of Steamboat Springs elk hunting , 3 had bull tags but none were 4 points or better ,our friend had a cow tag and shot the largest one in the group, they saw fresh bear tracks everyday near their campers in the  fresh  snow. The oldest son of our friend saw what he thought was a legal bull elk in the trees so he chambered a round in his 300 rum  & waited until it moved then he saw the entire antler it was a moose with a 36" spred.

sako06, My pardner and I used to go to the Piceance area every year. Two years ago the gas well people drilled a well five miles below our camp area. The traffic was as bad as I70 through Denver. We thought that since drilling had slowed down in the area, we'd try this year.... Both of us had our applications turned down..  Maybe all the gas well people that even thought they saw a deer applied for a license..

My pardner and his Dad hunted there in the late 40's when he was just a kid. He remembers that if you didn't get a deer, you didn't bring a rifle..  Things change, and not always for the better.

I spoke to the sons of hunters  who went to that area in the 1950's and would drive down from the propane filling station on mulberry and in less than a mile they'd each have 2 huge muley bucks every year into the 60's.I saw the damage to the muleys from a severe winter that trapped & killed hundreds of deer , then brush fires ruined the winter range & drought depleted  forage for the herds. The elk changed their migration route  from Meeker staying north of Hwy 64 & yarded up in Indian Valley north of Rio Blanco Lake  not crossing into Little Hills. We hunted Little Hills & out across   Rio Blanco Co Rd to Cathedral Bluffs. Wagon Wheel  in the ABC's shale oil area was one of the migration routes for elk and deer.I met lots of hunters from the Denver area hunting in Little Hills & surrounding area.I've read info on other forums about hunting in CO & the need to be totally physically fit or don't go,I left a desk job & hunted all over Little Hills gaining access via the jeep roads & hiked up and down the valleys in the hills long before all of the washes were closed off to vehicular traffic .We went out from the ranger station toward the county  to a road on the right that went  past a pond with nice size trout in it and drove up an old road that took off up a fence line & led up the ridges where we found deer & elk useage.I got to know that area fairly well.
