Well keep track of your schedule along about the middle of July so's you'll have a better idea of what's going on Oct 1-15. We can get you lined up with the permit stuff after you know if you'll have the time to get here.

I wanted to shoot a deer bad this season. I haven't shot a deer in about a dozen years, and I really thought this year was going to be it. Guess that's what I get for doing my own thinking.

Gene hope you can put things together to get here. We'll get you on plenty of goats, and should be able to do a pretty fair muley if they stay in as good of conditions as they are now.

my dad and bro went up the day after thanksgiving looking to fill the last doe tag dad had.  they tripped across a clean 5x5 they claim would challenge the 6x5 that's my avatar for score.  he went 176" and in this particular neck of MT river bottom and range land, that's huge.  we got no reports of a large mulie being taken off the land saturday or sunday so baring him getting hit on the highway or completely bugging out of the country, there should be a 180" class mulie in the vacinity next year.  kinda hurts saying this cause there's lots of time between now and then, but I find myself very much looking forward to Oct., 2008.  lol.

I went to my GS shop and met a customer  who was planning an elk hunt with his 375 H&H after someone told him that was the minimum caliber for elk & of course he believed the guy.

You're as qualified as a friend of mine who used a Ruger#1 in 6mm for Elk & Mule Deer in CO hitting running animals  in the head or neck.

I killed my first elk with a .257 Bob.  Dropped her dead, but long long ago I went all the way up to a .338 Wm and just love the knock down power.

after reading through all of these post i have one to add that NO one has offered up for the anty.

The good ole original belted magnum....anyone?  the 300 Holland & Holland. more energy tht the 06 and will equal (with the right load) the win mag without the abuse of the 300win mag or the 338.

i have killed numerous large animals with it but not elk... (moose, big black bears and my brother used it to kill his elk) cant remember the last time i lost an animal?

hope to get a colorado tag this year to change that!

mine is a pre 64 model 721. it'll push a 200 grn accubond  over 2900fps with the right hand load but i choose to shoot 67grns at 2791fps. it puts bullet drop at 500 around 42 inches when zeroed at 200.

at 200 yards i was putting 3 rounds in a 2 inch circle... form a crappy wobbly bench in the wind.

the gun is at Accurate Innovations right now having an exhibition grade claro stock with their aluminum bedding installed. new scope is in my gun room waiting for it. Zeiss 4.5-14x50 with rapid Z800 reticle(my reloader say its like cheating!!LOL). i hope to be shooting nickel sized groups at 200 from a steady rest...i hope.

If it is an H&H round for Elk, I would go for the 375 H&H. Myself, I would use a 300 RUM with Barnes TSX bullets.

this is obviously a personal preference question

the 300 h&h at muzzle produces around 3600ft. pounds with 180 grn bullet and modest powder charge. the RUM is around 4200ftp.

so yes it is more powerful no doubt, but at what cost...felt recoil has to be significantly higher? besides the affect the 3300fps has on a bullet at under 200 yards.

i personally am not a subscriber to the "it has to be faster and newer" to be better philosophy.

I have a "limb saver" on the 300 RUM. I like bigger more powerful for Elk and larger, not always new stuff. But I go the RUM with 10 boxes of factory ammo for $500.

My middle son used his 308 bolt gun for Elk this last season, he used the Barnes TSX 165 grain bullets in it. Got one at 65 yeards or so.

Try getting 375 H&H ammo I think it starts at about $2.50 a round and goes up from there.
