NoQuarter, I just got back from shopping with the wife and read an article in one of the gun rags about that new .338 Marlin, now that ought to become a real popular caliber for those that like the lever guns.

The ballistics are very good as well, Marlin has come to grips with what many hunters were looking for several years ago. A caliber that can be used in the bean fields and the dark timber without to change rifles in the middle of a hunt just because you are no longer hunting in the woods.

Yes, these new calibers, .308 and .338 should make things heat up a bit in the Marlin factory this year. Also the new Levelution ammo has help out my .444 Marlin a bunch, now it is a 200 yard rifle. Hats off to Marlin guys!

Good to see some one is using a 30-30. I believe that Jack Oconner said that a 30-30 and a 270 are all that is needed for almost anything in North America.

I think one of the new 338 sniper rifles would make an excellent big game getter as some are accurate to about 1 mile or so.

I would like to know what make and model of rifle you reference. The one I use is a Marlin  336 from 1972 and have recently attached some Dallas company Ghost ring sites that I like very much.  I want MORE Practice TIME before the woods.  They work very well so don't come around my house and think "I'm not sighted in".  These kick butt!

2008 at the shooting, hunting, outdoor, trade show in las vegas we spoke to 2 engineers who were testing  a special  338 rifle  that was accurate to point of aim at 600 meters  the ammo is $6.50/ round made in switzerland.A friend  knows Robert W. Hart who builds custom rifles for hunters, law enforcement and military and has  fired some of the rifles http://www.rwhart.com that are accurate at long distance and rw hart holds many competition titles for long range shooting.

There is a lot of ongoing research to make  lighter extreme distance sniper rifles for the military using lighter weight ammo so the handler can carry more  .

That info wasn't revealed to us but RUAG manufactures sniper ammo 338 Lapua Mag so maybe that could be the source and they make armor piercing ammo.

I think I'd settle for a http://www.rwhart.com rifle since his are accurate for long distance & he makes very accurate sniper rifles for  our military. get a receiver you like and have hart barrel it

The 338 Lapua Mag is a fairly heavy cartridge, when one of the 300 Mag family could do the same shooting for elk.

For sniper use, the AS50 would be my choice, 2 mile effective range with a standard 50 BMG round. http://world.guns.ru/sniper/sn67-e.htm

Jerry the goal they're trying  for is a lighter rifle with lighter weight ammo so the gunner can carry more ,I think several builders are pursuing that, when my friend who was a usmc  force recon scout sniper returns from a trip to N Carolina I'll ask him  about a  really long range rifle.

Sako,

I saw at Ft Bragg a couple of long range weapons that uses standard ammo that can reach out touch some one, thru a block wall.

Every so often I come out of retirement as an engineer to help with some problems, like what to do with a "free fire zone" and get to see non classified toys. The Army currently has a weapons system that uses the 50 BMG that is a 2 plus mile accurate killing machine. The sighting system is all electronic, so they have gone digital, they use the 50 BMG because it has no drop out to those ranges and a variety of rounds are available. One specialist joked that he could get the new rounds easier and faster online than thru his armorer. That specialist hit a 2 inch bullseye at 2 miles, I wasn't that sure about the hit, the block exploded.

Lighter is great, but being further away from the enemy is even better, even for the Marines.

Take care,

Jerry

I was chatting with a friend and he said you can see the extreme weapons on the Military Channel, which I don't know if I get, it is a show with a former active duty Navy SEAL.

Thanks Jerry I don't think I get that one http://www.rwhart.com makes sniper rifles for the military his hunting rifles really reach out,he has 20x60 binocs brand uknown but he mentioned them when he was assisting a customer sighting in  a rifle at 700 yards hitting a rock I was impressed,my longest shot was approx 625 yards with my 300wm sako using my handloads & the rifle wasn't anywhere  near as costly as a hart rifle .

Sako,

The things that they are doing today with the range of projectile weapons is so amazing that I feel like my military service was in the stone age.

The one thing I learned is that massive fire power can be over shadow by a specialized soldier/Marine that is a part of the Army or Marine Snipers. But with all things, technology will catch up and surpass what the human body is capable of.

My rifle instructor believed the 1903 was the greatest rifle for long range shooting ever built, a soldier I knew had a tricked out Mod 70 in 300 WM and a civilian scope, but another G.I. that I worked had a M14 turned in to the M21 Sniper Rifle. These guys could do thousand yard shoots. When it comes to hunting animals, there are big differences. One good shoot with a lot of energy at 200 yards will take down an elk with out destroying all of the meat. That is where my 300 RUM comes in. Sometimes the shot is not closer to me, so I like to fire for effect using solids to get as much meat as I can. In the military, I wanted the wound channel to do the most damage, because we were not going to eat the target.

As that I am of the M14 generation, that to me is the best rifle in the world, but the REM 40X has become the sniper rifle of choice, the M4 carbine is the favored combat rifle and many other things have been added to the mix during the years after Vietnam. Plus a variety of weapons have been added but not across the board as things used to be. The Spec Ops people can get 45s while the standard issue pistol in the M9 Berretta.

But for Elk, I know of one person who took an elk at 75 yards with a 308 Win bolt gun, right behind the shoulder and it dropped quickly. That is good shooting with some practice and understanding the weapon. The load was with one of the IMR powders and a Barnes 165gr TSX bullet.

Life is interesting,

Jerry

when i saw sako's first post on this with the 656yd. accuracy reference, i was thinking the cartridge certainly wouldn't have to be anything extravagent for that close quarters work.  a .338  '06 or winmag.  something along those lines.  certainly nothing bigger then that would be required.  and fall in line with lighter rifle, lighter carry objective.  cost was a curiosity, too.  projectile must be the crux of it.

i know a couple smiths that excell in the extreme range rifle department.  1000 - 3000+ yd. application.  lots of work and development with sub bmg cartridges in .338, .375 and .50 cal that can do some amazing things.

I still believe that a 30 cal would do the job on an elk out to 200 yards, maybe further. Yes it would be a magnum of some sort, thus this would be lighter round to handle.

The ultimate elk cartridge would be that 105 mounted in Spooky.

When I was hunting in the Little Hills area west of Meeker from 1984 thru 1999 lots of elk were dropped with 30-06's ,300wm & 7mm mags, my friend was the exception using his ruger no1 in 6mm but he was very proficient with firearms before he entered the  usmc  and shot his way into  shiper school.
